I personally like the fact that the team is developing the next version, but honestly I am concerned that v1.6 has been in a holding pattern since November. Can anyone offer an explanation?

They're skipping 1.6 and going straight to 2.0 in order to make good on the promise to not make having a Newsgator subscription a requirement to use FD - read Nick's blog post about it: http://nick.typepad.com/blog/2005/12/silence_new_fee.html, especially this part:
That left us with a choice: either release FeedDemon 1.6 after the site redesign, or ship it now as subscription software. Given that we'd promised not to make FeedDemon subscription-based, the only decision we could make was to wait until after the redesign.
Rather than let FeedDemon stagnate, though, we decided to plow ahead with v2.0, and release it as a free upgrade from the current release.

Well I guess I was not clear on this post. I was expecting a delay in 1.6 because of the site redesign, not waiting for a whole new version to be alpha/beta cycled. While I appreciate the free upgrade to 2.0, kinda hate to wait for all the cool improvements of 1.6.

Technically you don't *have* to wait. Version 1.6 RC2 is very solid and has been working very well for me.
I would encourage you (or anyone else for that matter) to give it a try.

I'd go one better and say wait for 2.0 which should go beta this week or next. We've worked out the big problems and if anything it's more stable than 1.6.
Please note that I am not actually employed by NewsGator, and my opinions should not be taken as their official stance on any matter. I'm just a happy FD user (since pre-1.0 alpha in 2003) helping out where I can.
