Upon starting Outlook, I get the following Newsgator error message: "Error initializing from subscription file - The root element is missing." All has been working up until yesterday just fine. When I click on the Newsfeeds home page, the message: "NewsGator has not been initialized in this session; the most likely cause for this is NewsGator is running in trial mode, and the trial has expired." is displayed. I no longer have the NewsGator toolbar either. This is a registered version. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

This is a known problem in 1.3; once in a while, the subscription file gets corrupted. NewsGator stores a backup copy of your subscription file, which should still be intact. So...do the following: 1. Close Outlook 2. Go to your \Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\RAI\NewsGator\ directory. Note that "Application Data" is a hidden directory by default, so you may have to type it to see it in Explorer 3. Copy the NewsGatorSubs.opml.backup over the NewsGatorSubs.opml file 4. Restart Outlook Hope this helps!

| That didn't solve the problem. I noticed that the http.xml as well as the NewsGatorSubs files were all blank when I looked at them - they had all been corrupted somehow. Clearing those files out allowed NewsGator to come up, but it looks like I'll have to resubscribe to everything. Thanks for the info. Maybe this issue will be fixed in 2.0?

| Wasn't there a NewsGatorSubs.opml.backup in the same directory?

| Yes, there was. It however was just as blank as the original. I guess it backed up the corrupted one at some point as I ran with it like that for a few days as I didn't know about the file.

I upgraded to 2.0 and it happened again. It's being caused when Outlook isn't closed properly (I'm having some lockup issues and have had to hard-boot a few times). Is this expected when NewsGator doesn't get to close properly?

The problem is known to happen when Outlook is abnormally terminated, but it's usually a very specific (and rare) set of circumstances, and the backup file is almost always intact. 2.0 made changes that make this even more rare, and recovery is normally seamless. It's odd that you're able to reproduce it so easily - makes me think perhaps something else is wrong. Start and stop Outlook normally, and make sure the backup file is intact and contains good data. Then see if the problem comes back.
