Last night we pushed a number of significant changes to the NewsGator Online Webpage. There are 2 major aims that these are designed to achieve: - Make it much easier for new users to get started into the world of RSS
- Expose some "community" features that will allow users to find interesting information that they normally may not see.
The first change we made is the concept of a "registrationless" trial. This means that you can try NewsGator without needing to create an account. We now have a [Try Now] button on the homepage which will take you to a fully working copy of NewsGator Online (click to enlarge):
We have also included a set of default feeds for new users so that they having a starting point. You can add to, or remove feeds just like a regular user. We have move folder-specific functions to the new "Folder Options" link, and have a new link for all users called "NewsGator Today" (I'll explain more about that later - click to enlarge):
Our new registrationless view persists between restarts, but it is cookie based, meaning that if you clean your cache, change profiles on your computer, or change computers, you will lose any customizations and added feeds. So we made it possible to convert the trial account to a regular free account. We have have a "Register" link at the top of the page, and we are also requiring much less information to create your account - just three things: a username, password and email address (click to enlarge).
Major update number 2: We have included a newspaper-style page for all users that we are calling Newsgator Today. Newsgator today combines both aggregated data to determine popular posts, and editor discovered content to showcase some of the top features of the RSS world. We have included sections for News Headlines, Top Video, Top Podcasts, Top Blogs, Entertainment, Fun, Sports and Technology (click to enlarge):
Note: there are some ads on the Newsgator Today page (even for registered users) but it is a newspaper format and they are very unobtrusive - If you don't use the newsgator today feature, you won't see them. As always, we would love your feedback - the NewsGator Online Feature Request forum is the best place for that information.
