Hello,

today I figured out a really odd behavior that I have been noticing since a long time.
It seems NW doesn't correctly store unread items when they no longer appears in the feed.

For example, I remember I haven't had the time to read this post yet http://intertwingly.net/blog/2007/07/21/rFeedParser from Sam's blog.
Today the post was removed from the feed because more items has been published and NW no longer displays it even if it was unread.

Could you please check this issue?

This is by design. The persistence settings delete items regardless of if they have been read or not - this helps people to not get overloaded with items they haven't had time for.

You really have 3 options:

  1. Flag an item you want to read later - flagged items do not get deleted by persistence settings
  2. Clip an item you want to read later - Same reason
  3. Increase the persistence setting for specific feeds that you don't get to read as often (Show Info on the feed/folder > Expand the persistence section > Use a custom persistence setting)

Gulp!

I'm an happy FeedDemon user, converted to Mac starting from the beginning of this year.

I think it's quite confusing to let NetNewsWire/FeedDemon handle the same thing in a such different way.
May I suggest to add an option to integrate persistent cache into NewtNewsWire?

Consider the following: I use both FeedDemon/NewsGator at home and at works, depending on the platform I need to use.
Its frustrating if at office you haven't the time to read an old post, you come back at home but you can't find it because on Mac it has been deleted.

I would suggest to find an intermediate way to let FeedDemon/NetNewsWire (and perhaps other NS softwares) to manage sync items in the same way.

What do you think?

NetNewsWire and FeedDemon do the same thing, but in different ways - FeedDemon let's you set the number of items to keep before dropping them off, NetNewsWire defines the length of time to keep items before doing the same. Both delete unread items if they reach that limit, and both allow you to change the setting.

The reason they handle it differently is that NetNewsWire and FeedDemon were separate programs before they were acquired by NewsGator, and that's the way they historically did it. We aren't going to force them to both be the same because there are a LOT of users on both sides who are used to them the way they are.

One misconception some people have is that NetNewsWire is a Mac version of FeedDemon, or FeedDemon is a PC version of NetNewsWire - but they aren't they are independent programs catering to their specific audiences. The downside to that is that at first it can be a little confusing for users switching between the two platforms As you found out.

For both system, sync will only work for items in the source feed, plus items up to 14 days old (to a maximum of 200 posts) anything older than that won't sync. The defaults for both NNW and FD cover this situation. By default FeedDemon keeps 200 posts per feed, and NNW keeps things until they fall off the NewsGator Current Feed (200 or 14 days)

So basically, I'm saying that unless you changed the settings in FeedDemon, the same thing would have happened there as well

Yes, I understand NetNewsWire is not a Mac porting and viceversa.

Yes, I did.
No chance NetNewsWire will integrate this option as well?

It's already in NetNewsWire

Go to Preferences > General and click the Archiving tab. The bottom option is to keep news items in NetNewsWire for at least X days, change it to something like 30. If you need to keep posts for longer than that, use the Archive option instead. This will save posts to an external archive that is searchable from within NetNewsWire, but will stop performance degrading.
