I would like to have an option in the preferences to have NNW display a small screen asking if I really intend to Quit, since usually all I intended was to close the current window with a Command W, but my mind was elsewhere or in neutral. Shouldn't be too difficult to implement, or use too many resources.

Cmd-W shouldn't quit the app -- it just closes the main window. You can re-open it via Window > Main window. (Or shift-cmd-n.)

I may have been just a bit too brief in my description of the problem.

I am fully aware of the function of both Command W and Command Q. My problem is that the two keys (W and Q) are adjacent on the keyboard, and both shortcuts are in frequent use. I find that I occasionally use Q when I intend W, thus having to wait for my 350 subscriptions to load when I have to relaunch NNW.

A simple pop-up window to say "Do you really want to quit NNW?" with a box to check or uncheck the pop-up window would save me from this inconvenience caused by my own carelessness.

Workaround: Define harder-to-accidentally-type shortcuts in the Keyboard Shortcuts tab under Keyboard & Mouse in System Preferences.

That's what I originally did in Safari after typing Command-Q instead of Command-W one too many times, then later switched to the TabStop SIMBL plugin to avoid that problem.
