I understand that enabling the option to "save news items as HTML files on disk" is recommended vs. keeping them in NetNewsWire because doing so prevents the program from slowing down due to the excess bulk, but I want to know what happens to files that are archived as HTML files on disk? Do they remain visible in NetNewsWire? If I do choose to enable this option, does the archiving of these files take place according to my persistence setting (i.e. instead of trashing the news items when they have surpassed the "keep items in NetNewsWire until..." date, they are instead archived to my local hard drive)?

When files are archived as HTML on disk, the files are cut loose from NetNewsWire. The files are not deleted (unless you delete them). Your persistence settings -- "Keep items in NetNewsWire" settings -- do not affect the HTML archive settings.

They're two separate things.

There are a few main ways to access the HTML archive:

1. You can open any of the files in a browser. They're just HTML pages. (No lock-in, in other words -- your data is kept in a common format.)

2. You can search via Spotlight or via NetNewsWire's search field in the toolbar. (Choose "HTML Archive" from the dropdown menu in the search field.)

3. For developers: you can write scripts that pull the data out of the HTML archive files.

I'd like to request an index for the HTML Archive or some other way to more easily browse it than is currently possible by default. Thanks!

I second this request.

Maybe it needs to be reposted as a new topic …

If anyone out there is handy with AppleScript, I imagine it would be possible to use a script to develop indexes - If anyone DOES create any scripts (not just index ones) that you would like to share, please post them in the Scripts Forum.

I don't see any reason why AppleScript would be necessary for that.

From a usability perspective the HTML Archive will seem like an unfinished feature until it can be conveniently "browsed", with or without relying on third party support to do it.

Is there any difference in toolbar searching the HTML Archive vs. regular subscriptions? Seems searching for a Subscription Name will match in the HTML Archive but not in regular subscriptions. And searching for the Subscription Feed URL doesn't work in either.

As I started looking at using the HTML Archive toolbar search as a workaround for not having an index it occurred to me how NNW might provide a reasonably effective HTML Archive UI. A few basic things that would help:

• Some way to precisely specify search criteria (e.g. by Name or URL)
• Having the Subscription Name in the search results
• Ability to permanently delete batches of matched items

As it is now neither the HTML Archive or the searching are particular useful to me but with a few changes I think its value could be significantly improved. And if it's useful to someone in its current incarnation I'd sure like to understand how. Otherwise, I have to wonder if it's destined to become an orphaned feature that will eventually be removed.
