I can see all of our sites on NewsGator wanting this type of control.

Anyone have any experience with this type of request?

Our system pulls the publish date from a feed, but other tags outside of standard RSS spec are ignored.  The event start/end dates are in extended XML tags that the publisher of the feed has created. Any change to take advantage of these tags would be a new feature request for management to consider.  

On the other hand, you certainly can restrict content by using the publish date. I can provide a simple JavaScript solution that will do this if you’d like to try it out.
