Hello my name is Adam and I work for the Indiana University School of Law. http://law.indiana.edu

We are in the process of switching from RSS 2.0 to Atom 1.0 . My personal experience when I changed the exact address of our rss 2.0 feed over to the atom 1.0 feed is that feed demon even days later never took those changes to effect. It never realized that there was an atom feed there instead of and rss feed and was like I was still look at the old rss. Can someone explain to me why this is or if possibly I am doing something wrong?

All FD should care about is that there is a valid feed at the URL in question - I don't believe a format change would make a difference.

But I think what you should really be doing is putting a permanent redirect on the old feed URL that points to the new one, rather than reusing the same URL. Just search for "rss permanent redirect" and you should find some good starting places.

The permanent redirect tells the client to update the URL it's using for the feed. In the case of NewsGator, if you're synching, the server will update and pass the new content to the synched clients. All of NG's clients will also update themselves if they're not synching through NG. This should also force any modern reader to update as well.

Here is what I found while doing the search for rss permanent redirect. I found one solution that is the following.

http://radio.userland.com/stories/storyReader$19964

This did not work for Firefox or Internet Explorer. The other approach I found was doing an IIS url rewriting or redirect which is should also do a permanent url change in FeedDemon. Which of these do you think is the best way to go so that browsers and FeedDemon all end up on the right feed?

You want a HTTP redirect, not that silly non-standard XML redirect stuff.

Please note that I am not actually employed by NewsGator, and my opinions should not be taken as their official stance on any matter. I'm just a happy FD user (since pre-1.0 alpha in 2003) helping out where I can.

Thanks for the reply Spyder, I think will probably just end up doing an IIS redirect. I appreciate the help.
