I am a longtime, very satisfied user of the desktop version of NetNewsWire, which I use on a Mac.
I recently got an iPhone 3G, and was very excited to install the NNW app.
However, I am completely flummoxed about how to sync my desktop feeds and iPhone version. Feeds that I have already read continue to show up on my iPhone, even though I've very carefully set up all the various options.
Does the iPhone version just not recognize feeds already read on the desktop? If so, what is the point of syncing? I subscribe to about 90 feeds, so the ability to bypass those already read is really crucial to me.
Unless I'm missing something, it would seem the sync only means that the iPhone can identify the feeds you read, rather than what you've actually done with them. Taking the time to Sync thus seems pointless, since I don't add new RSS feeds to my already extensive list very often.
Help! Surely I'm missing something here...

The iPhone version should sync both feeds, and their read states - but a few things have to be in order before this works:
1) You have to sync both the desktop NNW and iPhone version to the same NewsGator Account
2) After you read something in the desktop version, those changes have to be synced back to NewsGator Online - this is done during the refresh cycle.
Obviously, the refresh settings you have in Desktop NNW make an impact here. If you have it set to manual, or a very long refresh interval, those changes might not be propagated to NGO, which means they won't make it to the iPhone.
Here's a test for you:
1) Read some posts on NNW (Desktop)
2) Manually do a "refresh all"
3) Log into NewsGator Online and see if those posts are now marked as read Online.
If they are, it's a good start. If they aren't, that's where the problem lies.
Assuming they did get marked as read online:
4) Open NNW iPhone
5) Do a refresh and see if the read states are updated properly

Thanks for the quick reply.
The read status changes from my desktop NNW don't seem to be reported successfully to Newgator's website.
I set syncing prefs to Newsgator (previously it was set to .Mac), and logged in successfully. (I'm using NNW v3.1, by the way.) I quit the program, which triggered a sync; and when I restarted I selected the Sync News Status command to try to force an update.
Still the Newsgator site does not show items I've already read as read. I don't get it.
Note: I find the Newsgator site very confusing to navigate, in particular the settings/locations tabs. What exactly do my settings at Newsgator need to be? Where are these prefs set? I am not a tech geek, but I'm hardly a computer dunce (I was programming on Apple IIs in the early 80s, code websites by hand, etc.). So if I'm confused, I suspect there are many others.

I am having the same problem, except I use newsgator online and newsnetwire on my iphone. They haven't been syncing for the past 3 days. All posts that I read online are downloaded as new to my iphone and vice versa. This is quite frustrating.

One of the things to remember is that read/unread status is synced during a refresh session. So it's a good idea to do a refresh, to make sure read/unread status gets synced.
(I'm looking at ways to sync read/unread status more often, in the background, so you don't have to remember to refresh.)

@taghkanic: if you go to Window > Connection Tester and run the connection test, what results do you get?

Taghkanic (7/23/2008) I set syncing prefs to Newsgator (previously it was set to .Mac), and logged in successfully.
I have a question on this. I currently sync via .Mac to my three computers. I now have to change this to sync with NewsGator to sync to the iPhone client??
I just upgraded to 3.1 from a 2.x client. I would like to keep my 3 computers syncing as well as add the iPhone. Will the sync to the NewsGator site give me the same or equivalent sync capability as the "old" .Mac sync?

Yes, the only syncing with the phone is NewsGator syncing.
NewsGator syncing is better than the .Mac syncing in NetNewsWire in most ways. (And it has some additional features, such as clippings syncing, but it doesn't yet have tabs syncing.)
