When subscribing to a feed could a field be added to rename the feed name in the menu? Currently you can only edit the url and select in which folder you want the feed to live. Not sure why this isn't already implemented.

I've considered it, but haven't decided to do it or not.

A couple reasons:

1. It makes things more complex. Many people are still new to RSS, and I want to make sure things are as easy as possible, so as not to scare them off.

2. The dialog should display the name that appears in the feed and give you the chance to change it -- but NetNewsWire hasn't downloaded the feed yet, so it doesn't know its name. It doesn't download the feed until after you click the Subscribe button. (What it could do then, after downloading, is to give you the chance to rename the feed. But that's not as quick a job as just adding a text field for a name.)

hmmm... I'd like this feature too. I almost always rename my feeds at subscription time (maybe because lots of my feeds are craigslist searches).

What if you downloaded the start of the feed when the subscribe box is opened via a referral url to get the name, but don't actually subscribe until the button is clicked. Or just put "default" in the name box and use the downloaded name unless you override it. Should be pretty clear.

What if it's just an optional field? If you don't put a name in, it takes the default name of the feed. If you do type in a name, it overwrites the default feed name. I rename all my feeds and it's such a pain to have to go into each one to rename it.

Here's my vote. Practically every feed I rename.

Brent, any word on seeing this feature? Like I previously wrote, it could be just an option for people who want to use it.

It's on the list of things to consider. I can't make promises one way or another about it, though.

I'd be interested in an easier way to rename the feed also. How about being able to rename the feed after it's been loaded by clicking and hitting return just like renaming files in the finder?

think now, not later.
