I have Outlook and Online synching okay. But is it possible to have *only* Online pulling the feeds from their sources, and Outlook *only* pulling from Online? (For my bandwidth/resources efficiency, mainly).

I know Outlook pulls on the user set schedule, globally or per feed, and that Online pulls (I think) hourly. But does Outlook sync with Online whenever it pulls a feed, or on it's own schedule?

Would just setting Outlook to pull at longer than 60 minute intervals do the trick? Or would it still pull from both the feeds source and Online?

And if there is a way to do this, is it possible to do it on some feeds, only?

Is there a detailed technical explanation available of how syncing is done?

Thanks

Currently, Outlook only asks Online for what items have been read (this is done with an MD5 hash of the content of a post). But it always goes to the individual sites to get content.

The process is:
1) Ask online for a list of all the items that have been read since the last sync.
2) Poll individual RSS feeds
3) Figure out what items have been seen online, don't render those (unless you're configured to "download read items").
4) Tell online what items that you've just downloaded - everything gets marked read automatically online.

Note that the synchronization that FeedDemon does with NG Online is via a different API, so that works a bit differently.

As Greg mentioned on his weblog [1], all the sync stuff is currently being rewritten, so all this will be changing in the next version.

Thanks for the good and quick reply Gordon. So the answer is a clear no, at least until the next version.

Presumably then, if I add a feed Online, but not manually in Outlook, the synching won't automatically add it to Outlook?

Hang on, I just checked my feeds, and they *do* get auto-added to Outlook!

Presumably Outlook gets a list of all feeds, and then polls any new feeds from the source, rather than from Online. I guess that's item 1(a) in your list.
