Hi all -- I'd like to add the following rss feed to my list:

http://arxiv.org/rss/hep-ex

but newsgator will not add this feed. my.yahoo.com accepts it just fine.

any ideas?

Although I can bring that URL up directly, when I try to validate it with the feed validator:

http://www.feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Farxiv.org%2Frss%2Fhep-ex

It tells me the site is returning a 403 HTTP error code. My suspicion is that it's selectively denying people access to the RSS feed... for what reason, we can only guess. Do you know the admin of that site? Maybe you can ask what's going on with the 403 error messages.

Thanks. I've emailed the admin, and here's what they said:

Good news and bad news Collin.

arXiv.org screens out unknown user agents since they're often
rampaging robots. That's why both sites were being blocked from
downloading our RSS feeds.

I added the FeedValidator user agent to our list of allowable agents,
so that site works now. However, NewsGator doesn't define a user
agent. That's bad progamming and design on their part. Also, it means
we won't allow them to access the arXiv until they define a sensible
user agent, such as "NewsGator".

If it's important to you to use NewsGator, you should complain to
their support forums. Or you could just use a similiar service like
bloglines.

NewsGator Outlook edition and NewsGator Online BOTH provide specific user-agents when retrieving feeds, and have for quite some time.

I'd recommend you kick this one back to them and ask them to check again...if they still believe they're seeing a problem, please have them get in touch with our support team directly via email at support at newsgator.com.

I just looked at this. NGOS will send the user agent string as Greg describes, except for on the "add subscription" page. In that case, we forgot to put the user agent string on. Whoops. Fix for that coming real soon now.

I've checked in a fix for this, it should load later in the week.
