Hi Robin,

I'm a little confused by that last post. If you point NewsGator's base news folder to an exchange server folder, the posts will indeed go there. If you have multiple machines pointing to the same exchange folder, you should be careful that only one of them retrieves news, or else you should sync the NewsGatorSubs.opml file.

To stop one machine from automatically retrieving news, turn off the "Retrieve news automatically every nn minutes" option.

Did this answer your question?

Not exactly. That would work if I left Outlook running at the office, but I generally prefer not to do that. If my office installation retrieves news while it's not running, shouldn't I see news posts when I log on from home, without affirmatively retrieving anything from home? That doesn't seem to be happening. If that's what *is* supposed to happen, then I'll do some more rigorous experimenting to see if I can confirm what the problem is.

How do you synchronize the opml file?

Outlook needs to be running for news to be retrieved.

NewsGator doesn't have an automatic way to synchronize the OPML file - you'd have to come up with some way to do this on your own, for now. The location of the file is described here.

Ok. But then, what does "Retrieve news automatically when Outlook is offline" do?

It controls whether NewsGator should periodically retrieve news when it is in "Offline" mode. In Outlook 2002 and 2003, this is controlled by the File/Work Offline setting.

OK, I'm getting close to understanding this, and it might be helpful . . . but how can NG collect news if I'm offline? Does that mean "connected to the Internet, but not connected to my server?" (This is probably a dumb question, but I never work in offline mode.)

Well, "offline" is an outlook setting, which may or may not have anything to do with whether you're connected to a network. By default, NewsGator won't try to retrieve when Outlook is offline. But, some folks run Outlook in "offline" mode even when they're connected, so there is an option for NewsGator to attempt to retrieve news when Outlook is "offline".

I know this does not answer your question directly, but here is a thought...

Because I have Exchange server at work, I keep my "My News" folder in a local .pst (much faster).

In other words, use a 2nd, separate file and copy that.
