duplicate folders appearing after cutoff of NewsGator sync

Hi:

I've been a happy user of FeedDemon since I purchased it in 2004.
Since I can't use IE7 currently because of a compatibility problem with one important app, I decided to stick with FD 2.7 at least for a while. (Mistake?)

In the evening of Sep 30, when I opened FD, no feeds appeared. I assumed this was because the synchronization with Newsgator was dropped, so I unsynced all feeds. Then they were pulled in and things seemed fine.

The next day I noticed that all the folders had been renamed with an appended "-1"
e.g., from News to News-1
The older folders were there also, with the same feeds as the "-1" folders, but the feeds had no items in them.
Further examination showed that the "-1" folders appeared as unsynced, while the older folders were still synced.
So:
original folder new folder
----------------------------------------
News News-1
(same feeds) (same feeds)
nothing in feeds populated feeds, working

So I have two questions:

1. How should I best deal with this situation for now before going to FD 3?
Leave things as they are? Delete the original folders and rename the new ones?
???

2. How should I handle this when I do the migration to FD 3.0?
Will all folders be synced with Google Reader, or just the older (empty) ones that are currently synced?
Should I set up sync for the new "-1" feeds before doing the conversion?
???

When you right click on an item (or select all and right click), the contextual menu has a number of options for creating PDFs. Unfortunately, for me nothing happens when I select any of these. Am I missing something or is this not working yet?

For what it's worth, I'd very much like to be able to collect a newspaper into a PDF than I can e-mail my wife.

This is most annoying, it does that all the time. I don't want to newsgator, only feeddemon. The KB says disable on properties of folder, but FD 2.7 doesn't have that option on the properties of a folder.

Pre-release does not sync...with Google Reader.
Only one item was synceven I had 300 RSS feeds.

Reading in external browser - keep FeedDemon with focus?

Hi, have my reading set up to go to an external browser (firefox). But everytime I click a link the browser gets the focus.

But I prefer to click all the headlines then read them all later. Is there a way I can keep FeedDemon with the focus until I've finished selecting all my stories?

Is it possible to exclude feeds from the panic button ?

Some feeds I don't mind having marked as read (or even deleted) when I hit the panic button but others I do not want marked as read automatically under any circumstances.

Does FeedDemon provide functionality for this?

I recently added a computer to FeedDemon + GoogleReader. it downloads only the unread items. How to download upto certain number of days previous posts that are there in google reader.

How to atleast download and sync all bookmarked items across computer when a pc is newly added to sync.

Control M -- left-hand only?

Control M is used to mark everything in a newspaper as read. On my computer, I find that this only works if I use the left-hand control key. Using the right-hand control key + M sometimes does nothing and sometimes takes me to another newspaper (without marking the items I was reading as read).

Am I misunderstanding something, or is this a bug?

Forum RSS updated posts not shown as unread

The problem is that when a RSS item has been clicked (and thus marked as read) and that item gets updated later (the updated content & date/time are shown correctly in FD (can be checked when "show all" is on)) it's NOT shown as UNread again! Why? Is this a problem in FD or with the RSS feed?

When I select to "show all" in the feed, I see the updated items which I have clicked (marked read) earlier between not read RSS items which are shown in bold. All the feed items are in correct order but the "already once read but updated after that" items are not in bold. I tested this so that I open the RSS link in Opera (it has nice simple preview page and it shows the feed items in order) and I checked that the item order match in FD.

After running cleanup all the items are shown unread again for the first time but clicking them starts the process again and after a while I'm only seeing completely NEW threads (first post).. problem with FD "cache"?

FD version used: 2.7 (NOT using NewsGator synchronization)

I've quickly tried Google Reader for this problem and it seems that it also doesn't mark the updated items as unread again.. + contrary to FD, it doesn't sort the updated items by the updated date but with the original date (when it was fetched?), so the "updated and not marked as unread" items are waaaaayyy down in the list, lots of scrolling to even find those. But since Google Reader seems to be bugging out otherwise, I don't know if this a RSS feed or RSS reader problem.

Before I bumped into this problem, I thought that the RSS tech is simple and works fine, but since I've been trying to google this problem I've discovered that RSS tech seems to be a normal bug ridden POS tech like other computer related stuff. Or RSS was never meant to be used with forum posts.

Coming from Newsgator Inbox - even formerly payed for it - i have to switch to a new program as Newsgator is stopping the support and the newsgator online services.

so i am trying the recommendation for feeddemon... having to use google reader does not make me happy, but here we go.

and so far it's working, except for one BASIC feature: http authentication for rss-feeds does not work!

there is no option to configure user/pass once the feed is added - neither in google reader nor in feeddemon.

when adding a new feed that needs auth i am asked for user / pass once, but i can not change that and it won't update / collect feed items either...

so the suggestion from newsgator is to migrate to a rss-reader that has less features, especially a key-feature like authentication???

the feed is from dimeadozen.org - basically it's all sites using the eztorrent php scripts.

is there anyone using feeddemon with this site, beeing able to get ANY feed-items?

We recently informed you that NewsGator Online and Synchronization services would not be available for consumers as of August 31, 2009. Since the GA releases of NetNewsWire and FeedDemon, which synchronize with Google Reader, will not be available until next week, we are extending the availability of NewsGator Online and synchronization services. Synchronization will not be disabled before the GA versions of FeedDemon, NetNewsWire for Mac and NetNewsWire for iPhone are available. We anticipate that NewsGator Online availability and synchronization services will end on September 10, 2009. We will update you when the GA versions of FeedDemon and NetNewsWire are available.

Uninstalling Newsgator for Outlook 2002?

problems with beta FD

I really like the idea of synching to something like Google Reader HOWEVER I have had problems with each of the beta versions since the conversion.

I only converted my laptop Feed Demon not my main desktop one. And now I wish I had not.

here are the problems:

1 every single time i look at FD there are feeds with new items that are NOT shown in the folder view (by either bold or unread item count).

2 FD does not update feeds even tho the automatic feed option is selected. frequently ( at least every other day) i have to RESYNCH all feeds . i have several hundred - yes that is a large number but the reason for using FD and not something else was its ability to handle the number.

3 the beta version of FD (including the recent update) freq freezes and either crashes or takes many minutes to unfreeze (up to 10).

4 NOT once has Google Reader reflected the same READ/UNREAD marks as FD and vice versa. And Resynching with GR OFTEN takes away all the UNREAD marks from the FD version thus rendering it impossible to see what is currently unread.

I really loved FD but this latest move has seriously damaged the main reason for me to use it. I am hoping that this is growth issues with the new version and have my fingers crossed but it is very disappointing.

I would rather pay for an app that works than have these frequently annoying crippling problems.

Feed Demon text sizes selections ignored

Purchased a netbook to read newspapers so that I could control the size of the fonts. I'm having trouble reading the normal text size.

Using Firefox it is pretty easy to get the font size big enough to read.

Depending on the RSS feed, however, Feed Demon seems to ignore the "text size" selections. There isn't any difference between the actual text size shown whether it is set to smallest or largest. Also, even when there is a difference in the feed text size, it would be helpful to have an even larger than the current largest size.

Wanted to use Feed Demon for offline reading but if the offline article is formatted in any way then the font sizes are too small to read.

Can FD show the feed exactly as it is now?

It may be that I don't understand how RSS is supposed to work but I'm using FeedDemon to view an RSS feed from our job ticketing system (JIRA) and FD is showing jobs that are no longer current.

It seems to have downloaded some items and is keeping copies of them locally.

I want it to only show items that are actually in the feed now, ie. open job tickets.

Is that possible?

FeedDemon has ADS now? I stop synchronizing and I invite everyone to do so.

I noticed that the new beta adopts ads inside the interface.

For this reason I am disabling synchronicity with newsgator for all my feeds.

I mean, either you make money by observing my reading habits, or you make them by nagging me with ads.

Both things is a little too much.

I'll just backup my feeds some other way now.

I invite everyone to consider doing so, at least as a form of protest. And don't tell me you don't think Newsgator "spies" on your reading habits, because that is a goldmine. It would be like having easy gold on the table and not taking a piece. Unlikely.

Bug in WideView with Dual-Monitors enabled

When using two monitors, FeedDemon has a visual glitch when restoring the program from the tray:

On the right side of FeedDemon's window, you will see a white area. As soon as you resize the main window, this area disappears and the item display again spans the whole width.

Problem with Scientific America Podcasts

I just tried to sign up for two Scientific America Podcasts (http://www.sciam.com/podcast/sciam_podcast_r_d.xml and
http://www.sciam.com/podcast/sciam_podcast_r.xml). When I try to download the enclosures it just downloads a file called podcast.cfm regardless of the files specified by the enclosure. I have tried it with all available podcasts for the two feeds and only one of the files worked correctly.

How to stop synchronization login dialog box?

Hi

I tried out FD synchronization with NG a while back but now I don't need it any more (and it's disappearing anyway). However even after I reinstalled FD2.7 and unchecked all of my folders' sync boxes, the services.newsgator.com account dialog box keeps popping up prompting for a login and username. I've looked all over to disable sync but I can only find the sync option for polling frequency field. I tried entering 0 in the hope that would disable sync, but it converts that to 5 (minutes).

How do I disable sync in FD?

I have been using feeddemon for many years with great satisfaction but now I try to connect my feeddemon using vpn. it is not possible to be connected in that case .
If I try to check with test connexion I get following message:
403 access is forbidden to the requested page. connection test failed. If I go into my feeds internet works, it is only when I try to update feeds.
any suggestions?

given the postings here and use that seems to indicate that Google syncing is not yet fully functional wthout issues and the fact that not all clients are ready to go, NG doesn't it make sense to push your August 31st cut-off deadline out to allow your loyal customers/users a better transition to the new back-end?

Come 8/31, if the clients are not all released and syncing issues still exist, the external view of NG will be that they're not really ready to manage/build corporate-ready systems - are you prepared for this?

I've been a long-time NG customer (paid for clients in the past) and user and hate to lose the functionality I've come to rely on (the existing clients and back-end works just great for me, thank you very much...)

Feeds across multiple instances of FeedDemon not syncronized with Google Reader

I use FeedDemon on three of my PCs, all of which are tied to the same account. If they're all running and I view a bunch of feeds on one of them, when I go back to the others it shows those read posts as unread. Checking with google reader shows that the posts are no longer marked as unread.

It appears as if FeedDemon doesn't update unread posts it has already downloaded, even if google reader has them marked as read.

Is there a way to make FeedDemon mark these read posts as read. I would like all instances of feeddemon to show the exact same information, a representation of what google reader has marked as unread. If it gets read on one, all others should update.

Thoughts?

Version 3 beta not bringing in unread posts from Google Reader

I just installed the FeedBurner beta on my computer running Windows 7 64-bit. I set it to sync with Google Reader. It brought over all my feeds in their proper categories, but it only brought over the unread posts from Lifehacker, and even there it found 151 unread compared to 236 reported by Reader. It seems to be successfully fetching any new posts, but how can I get it to bring over the rest of my unread posts from Reader? Thanks!

Subtle problem when I'm in Unread folder view.

If I directly right click on a folder to mark it as read, it doesn't disappear. I have to left click thn click on another folder.

FeedDemon + GoogleReader sync w/ 2 PCs, Flags don't get synced.

I switched from newsgator sync to google reader. unfortunately my flags didn't get synced between my 2 PCs, on PC#1 i have e.g. about 80 flagged items, on PC#2 there is just 1 flagged item.
Is there the possibility to merge those flagged items and have the same amount of flagged items on both machines?

I was a tad too quick and added two feeds outside my intended folders. Thus they ended up on the root. I have tried to move them into the folder, and initially it seems to work, as FeedDemon actually moves the feeds into the folder. However, when I restart FD, they're back at the root. Perhaps some issue with the Google Reader sync?

OK we don't have anymore newsfeeds in clippings folders...

So, now, I put tags in FeedDemon items and then I make them public in Google Reader.

What about giving us the possibility to precise this directly in the FeedDemon UI. I mean, let's have a contextual menu for each tags with a box to say "I want to make this public" and a link to copy the RSS feed of the Google Reader "tag-blog"

How to tag webpages that are in tabs and not articles?

Hi,

The tagging UI when reading articles in a feed is pretty clear. However, I'm not sure how to use tags on webpages that are opened in tabs.

In Clippings Folders, I could drag the link onto a clipping folder and it would get added. Dragging & dropping for tags only yields a "disabled" icon.

The tags UI supports dragging the tag onto a article. However, when I try to drag a tag onto the tab, I get the "subscribe to feed" dialog box with an fdaction code filled in.

Help?

Syncing w/ Google Reader marks all as read

The subject says it all: When trying to sync FeedDemon with Google Reader, it wipes out my entire unread count, leaving about 40 unread in total. I backed up my cache before doing this, fortunately, but it's a pain in the ass. I've tried this five times on two computers, and I get nearly identical results each time - the only difference is the number of unread varies from 2 to 100. It's never accurate.

Any suggestions? Is it better to export from NewsGator Online to G Reader?

FeedDemon 3.0.0.25 synched with Google Reader does not honor the configuration?

When I made the switch to Google Reader sync, I've noticed that FD updates the feeds all the time, regardless of the Syncronization Option setting: "Update my feeds every x Minutes" (x = 120 in my case)

FeedDemon Tags not showing up in Google Reader?

Hi,

Saw the announcement about NGO going away and have started the painful process of moving to Google Reader.

I have 6 clippings folders of which 3 I share as RSS feeds. It appears that there is no automated way of converting clippings folders so I thought I would workaround it using tags (despite the fact that one folder contains 600+ items).

I have been using FD 2.7 till now and just upgraded to 3.0.0.24 RC3. Have never used Google Reader till now. Marked all items as read in FD, cleared cache and synced with NGO one last time. Made the switch to Google Reader sync.

I created a new tag and dropped into a few items. Then selected "Update Synchronized Tags". Go to Google Reader>Settings>Folders and Tags and the new tag isn't to be seen anywhere. Logged in & out of Google Reader, no change. Exited and relaunched FD - no change.

The items I added to the tag are fairly old and would not have been present in any feed that I migrated to Google Reader.

Can anyone help me figure this out - Nick says in his original announcement http://is.gd/1VxEg "Tags you add in FeedDemon are synched with Google Reader" but I'm not seeing this happen at all :(

Hi. I'm brand new to RSS and aggregators. I'm sure these are very basic questions with really obvious answers, but I haven't been able to find them.

How can I delete an item either before or after I look at it?
How can I re-visit items I've already read?

Also, is there a good tutorial for FeedDemon?

Still can't import NewsGator OPML into FeedDemon successfully 3.0RC4

I installed FeedDemon 3.0RC4 today, but I still can't get it to import my NewsGator Inbox feeds (via OPML; I've never used NewsGator Online) and sync to Google Reader.

I currently have about 300 feeds in FeedDemon that seem to sync fine with Google Reader. Some of them I imported into Google Reader from my work computer's Inbox OPML file, and some of them I've added manually. I don't have any problem manually adding feeds one at a time -- they seem to update andget synced to Google Reader fine, although currently my subscription count in Google Reader is 3 more than what shows in FeedDemon.

My problem is that I have about 1700 more feeds in an OPML file on my home computer and this is what happens:

1. Import into FeedDemon via "File:Import Feeds". The feeds appear in the subscription list, then the app is busy for about an hour, presumably downloading messages from the feeds for the first time. I notice that none of the imported subscriptions have any unread items, however.

2. Exit FeedDemon. Check Google Reader and see that it still only has 320 subscriptions listed.

3. Start FeedDemon again. It runs with the "Checking Subscriptions (GR)" message in the status area for about an hour, during which I'm away from the computer. When I come back, all the feeds imported in step 1 are gone.

Does anybody have any idea how to get this to work? I honestly don't mind having to switch from Inbox to FeedDemon, but I can't seem to get all the way there.
