Apparently even after completely removing it from your system, it continues to block software that hasn't been whitelisted. Since I changed the version of FD I was running, it was being blocked. Only software that had been explicitly been whitelisted and was still current was working.

Installing and continuing to use ZoneAlarm seems to be my only option now - and I couldn't want to less!

Anyway, thanks for all the effort you all put into this thread!

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Absolutely - ZA is one of the hardest apps I've ever come across to clean out of a system; It kept blocking some apps on the box I built for my father-in-law even after I had removed/deleted every component I could find; we finally just had to re-install it and leave it installed on that machine so he could run his business until we had time to backup an re-format the drive...

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Jack - sorry for the confusion!

Nick - it's not your fault, but you just crushed my last remaining hope that I'd be able to figure this out! ;)

Seriously, they connect in the same manner? I can't figure out what might be going on here.

I'm almost at the point of reinstalling ZoneAlarm to see if there's some vestige of it that is causing the problem. There must be a difference between how it connects to the internet vs. how FeedDemon and the NewsGator screensaver connect... FeedDemon stopped working on my laptop both at home and at work at exactly the same time. We use different routers by different companies, so there's no chance an update occurred that caused this issue. Strangely, I have no trouble with port 80 traffic, as Firefox, Opera and even IE7 proper all work perfectly fine. It's just a certain subset of applications that appear to rely on IE's connectivity that are not working - FeedDemon, the NewsGator screensaver, Google Desktop (I just tried the latest version and it won't connect), Google Earth, Maxthon 2 (Maxthon 1 works)...

The fact that Maxthon 1 works drives me crazy; I'd assume as an IE-based browser that it would suffer the same problem as the others, but apparently not.

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Hi Jason,

Based on everything you've said, it certainly sounds like a firewall is blocking FeedDemon. In fact, firewalls are - by far - the biggest reason for connectivity problems with desktop software in general.

You mentioned that you're inside a "corporate and home network." Is it possible that your corporate network uses a fiirewall that's blocking FeedDemon?

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

OK, the next thing I would try is to add the actual embedded IE to the exceptions list (is it wininet.dll Jack/Nick?) - I realize that if regular IE is working, this shouldn't matter, but I'm dropping 10 and punting at this point :)

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

sigh, again you beat me to the punch, saying the same thing in fewer words, Jack :)

"Brevity is the soul of wit"
- Polonius, Hamlet

So now we know who's wittier :)

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Thanks Critter - I just gave that a try, but no dice.

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

The only firewall that is installed on my system right now is the built-in one that comes with XP. You may have to turn it on temporarily if it is off to access them) and first delete all FeedDemon (and other apps you're having problems with) references, then re-add FeedDemon (and any other other affected apps) and see what happens.

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Are you saying that you do have ZoneAlarm installed at the moment?

If so, try looking for any references to FeedDemon/FeedStation and IE in it's configuration and remove them to try and retrain it.

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Hi Nick,

The internet connection tester says HTTP status 0, and the error that comes up in red text says:
FeedDemon was unable to connect to the Internet.
If you have an active connection, then this probably means that your firewall is blocking FeedDemon, so please verify that your firewall permits FeedDemon to connect.
If you're connecting through a proxy server, make sure that FeedDemon's proxy settings are configured correctly.

Everything keeps pointing to something being wrong with my firewall. The only thing I can think of is that I uninstalled (ie. stopped using) ZoneAlarm a little while back. FeedDemon kept working fine after that, until I tried installing a new version. Is there any chance this is related? Otherwise, I'm inside both a corporate and home network, so I don't actually need to run a software firewall - so lately I've been going without while I try to figure out this problem. And my proxy settings are turned off both in IE (the system's Internet settings) and in FD.

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Hey Jason -
I talked to Nick B about this and he suggested trying FD's connection tester to see what that shows (Tools | Options | Connection | Test Connection).
RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Hi Nick, it had been set to Auto Detect, so I changed it to No Proxy, but it didn't appear to help. I have tried disabling my firewall, unfortunately to no avail. Internet access being blocked in only a few programs is often a result of a firewall.

Don't forget to turn your firewall back on after testing.

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Hi Nick - unfortunately my proxy settings are completely blank, which is what they're supposed to be. The thing that's killing me is that IE itself is working. Here's a weird one - Maxthon 1 works, but Maxthon 2 doesn't. Of course Firefox and Opera work fine. So strange.

RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

Hey Jason...

That's pretty interesting that FeedDemon and some other apps have quit working now as well. I know the screen saver, and I'm pretty sure FeedDemon both use IEs' connection settings to connect to the internet.

In IE, go to Tools > Internet Options, then on the Connections tab click the LAN Settings button. Check to make sure everything in there looks ok.

One problem that I've had in the past is when I've been using Fiddler (an HTTP Proxy Debugging tool). It registers as your computers proxy and changes those IE settings. It crashed overnight on me once, so when I tried connecting to the net in the morning, I couldn't get anywhere. Changing my IE settings back to Automatically Detect Settings fixed my issue.
RE: FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

This is unlikely the problem since IE7 works fine for you, but check your Internet Options and make sure that you're not working offline.

FeedDemon (and other apps that connect via IE) unable to see internet

FeedDemon abruptly stopped being able to connect to my internet connection, for no apparent good reason. Interestingly, the new NewsGator screensaver never worked for me at all, and it appears the problem is common to them both. Also, the latest version of Maxthon 2.0 won't connect.

Strangely, IE7 works fine, as does Firefox and Opera. Also, NewsGator Go! is able to connect to the internet via ActiveSync and synchronize my NewsGator feeds.

Anyone else see something like this? I can only assume it has something to do with .Net or IE 7, but I have no idea what might have changed. I reinstalled .net 2.0, but it didn't help. Any thoughts would be hugely appreciated! I'm going through FeedDemon withdrawl!!!
