Having both the possibilities (auto/manual) IMHO is the best option, so to avoid limiting other desires/needs with personal ideas.

BTW, also showing categories in the header, as well as the possibilty to search article by categories coudl be a nice feature (but this is a different story).

Bye!

RE: Load FeedDemon at startup and have minimize to tray

Personally I'm fed up with applications that open automatically at startup. Lots tend to do it without even a by-your-leave, and the option to turn it off is buried deep in the preferences or even cannot be found. Many of them don't even have a good reason for loading at startup.

All these apps loading, of course, make the wait longer before you can actually start using Windows, and use up memory and CPU resources. I have no problems with loading FD when I want to use it, and waiting a few seconds longer. I suspect Nick may be of a like mind.

RE: Load FeedDemon at startup and have minimize to tray

Hello,

Just found FeedDemon, and I like it. It is very similar to my current newsreader (http://www.feedreader.com/), but with the obvious advantage of Newsgator, so to have a "distributed" feed updates.

I tride to find it, but discovered that, effectively, there is not the äutomatic startup and minimize"setup feature, but that to obtain this you need to tweak manually with Windows startups. All the other feedreader I've tried does have it (http://www.feedreader.com/ too, of course), because I believe it's natural that it starts with the machine, and quietly discover news feeds, showing that something happened when necessary. I believe that the need to manually tweak the startup (over than being often an unreliable method) is awkward and ruins the impression of a good product which I had looking ion FeedDemon the first time I saw it.

Hope this lack of very common functionality will be fixed soon.

Regards,

Orange

RE: Load FeedDemon at startup and have minimize to tray

System tray applications have an ideal behavior, especially for an application of this sort. If you examine the system tray options for a fleshed out UI like uTorrent, you'll find that it supports adding itself to start up and minimizes without flickering. Also, you can disable activate when system tray icon is clicked, which allows you to click once on the system tray icon to see in the app, and then click it again without cursor movement to minimize the application again. This is ideal behavior for FeedDemon, if at the very least as an option, since if you disable desktop notifications and you see an inbox system tray icon you just want to jump in and out to see which feeds have new items.

As for having FeedDemon start minimized programmatically, add a commandline switch like -minimized for the shortcut that it creates. I've done this before in programs I've made. FeedDemon doesn't even necessarily need to worry about creating it. Just make the command line switch so users don't have to see it flicker from restore to minimize every time they boot, as is the only option right now.

RE: Load FeedDemon at startup and have minimize to tray

FeedDemon loads fine but will not minimize until I manually minimize. I have tried normal, maximize and minimize and get nothing. Not that many programs loading, just Roboform, a calendar widget, Nod32 and FeedDemon.

RE: Load FeedDemon at startup and have minimize to tray

It should launch maximized and then minimize when the initial sync is complete (maybe even before the sync completes). Is it not doing this? It may just be slow to do this if you have several programs launching at once.

RE: Load FeedDemon at startup and have minimize to tray

Yep. It loads up at startup time but will not minimize to tray. Have to physically minimize to tray. Not a big deal but annoying. Would like it to load at startup and minimize to tray like other RSS readers and other programs. Cannot figure out how. No option in Options

RE: Load FeedDemon at startup and have minimize to tray

Yep.

Create a shortcut to FD in your startup menu (c:\documents and settings\yourprofilename\Start Menu\Programs\Startup). Once the shortcut is created, right click the shortcut, click on Properties, then click on the shortcut tab. In the Run dropdown select "minimized".

In FD make sure that the tray icon is set to appear "When minimized" or "always" under Tools->Options->....and I can't think of the tab the setting is on (not at my FD system at the moment), but you shouldn't have any problems finding it :)

Load FeedDemon at startup and have minimize to tray

Is it possible to load FeedDemon at startup and automatically minimize to tray?
