The Basics - how to subscribe to a podcast

I've installed feedstation and have read the other forum postings with regards to feedstation but it appears that I am still missing something. I am not able to figure out how to get a podcast from newsgator online to feedstation. There is mention of a green button on different posts in which you can use to download a podcast but I am not sure how to get the magic link. Is it just certain podcasts that are possible?

I have tried this with Hanselminutes, dot net rocks and several other podcasts that i just picked from the search within newsgator online.

Can someone provide me with some additional information and if I am trying this with the wrong blogs, can you post a blog in which does work so that i can truly test this?

FeedDemon won't send enclosure links to FeedStation

I just downloaded and installed FeedDemon 3.0.0.41 that includes FeedStation. The documentation says that when I have an RSS feed that includes enclosures, I should be able to click the Download link and FeedDemon passes that to FeedStation to download. That is not happening. I click the Download link in FeedDemon and it opens an Internet Explorer window and is trying to open file directly through IE.

In the FeedDemon options, General tab, Enclosures/Podcasts settings, I have the option selected to add clicked enclosures to the FeedStation download queue. However, if I click the Open FeedStation button on this dialog box, I get an error message that FeedStation is not installed on my computer.

But FeedStation IS installed on mycomputer. There's a shortcut for it in the Start Menu right next to the FeedDemon shortcut. I can run FeedStation just fine from that shortcut. I can copy & paste the link that comes up in IE when I click an enclosure link in FeedDemon into FeedStation and then FeedStation will download the item just fine. So FeedStation itself works.

Many downloads now called "redirect.mp3"

Using Feedstation 2.0.0.25, I've noticed that many of the downloaded files from my feeds have started to be named "redirect.mp3" instead of the original MP3 name. These are ones where the feeds are sending me through podtrac. A good example feed is

http://leoville.tv/podcasts/itn.xml

The enclosure tag in the feed looks like

<enclosure url="http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3?http://aolradio.podcast.aol.com/insidethenet/ITN-033.mp3" length="18482920" type="audio/mpeg"/>

It should be downloaded as ITN-033.mp3, but instead, it's showing up as redirect.mp3. If FeedStation downloads the next one, it either overwrites it or put it in another folder.

I know windows 7 isn't out yet, but I have been testing my software ready for when it comes, and have come across a problem with feedstation (in Vista SP1 this problem does not exist)

After entering my password, I get the following message:

Unable to connect to the internet. Please make sure that you have an active connection, and that FeedStation isn't blocked by your firewall.

All other programs I have access the internet fine. I have tried turning off the firewall and shutting down my antivirus, but still no joy. I ahve tried adding feedstation to my firewall list, but still not joy.

Any suggestions?

It seems like I have to go into my C:\Documents and Settings\CurrentUser\Local Settings\Temp directory about every other week and clear out all the files starting with ~fs that Feed Station creates.

I use Feed Station to download my video and audio podcasts that I enjoy. It works wonderfully for that purpose. The only negative is that it creates a temporary file in the temp directory and then after moving it to the appropriate directory it doesn't delete the temporary file.

Yes, I could make a simple batch file to delete them quickly but why doesn't feed station clean up after it self? I just went through and deleted about 10 gigs of ~fs files.

I'm currently using FeedDemon Pre-Releaes 3.0.0.25 which installs Feed Station 3.0.0.25. I'll update to the newest version in a few minutes but this is something that has been going on few months. Any chance on a change in the way it operates?

Using on Windows XP with the latest updates with IE 8 and Eset Nod 32 antivirus

Clip multiple items at once

Hi,

I have some subscriptions with a lot of new items.
Now, I have to clip every item to 'My Podscast' so Feedstation will download them.
Can i clip all those items at once? A bit like you can mark a whole page is 'read'?

Help - FeedStation Window Not Restoring or Maximizing using version 2.7

Hey Gang:

I am using Vista Ultimate 32 bit and I have FeedStation 2.7 installed, but no for some reason the screen will not restore, maximize, or show up on the initial load up. I searched through the forums and googled for an answer, but no luck. Any one else having this issue or is this an old bug with a quick fix available?

FeedStation created a folder with period at the end (!)

Recently, I added a new podcast to FeedDemon, called "Tom Robinson Introducing..." (from the BBC web site http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/trintro/) I let FeedDemon keep the three trailing periods, which was probably not a good idea, because when FeedStation downloaded the first MP3 it created a folder called "Tom Robinson Introducing.." and I had a heck of a time accessing it! Errors abound! Anyhow, long story short, I used "dir /x" from the command line to look up the 8.3 folder name, rename it to something without a period at the end, delete it and start over. I changed the name of the podcast to "Tom Robinson Introducing" and all was well.

Anyhow, it looks like FeedStation tried to save me from a period-ending folder by lopping off the 3rd period, but it left the first two. Windows XP doesn't like that, and wouldn't let me manually access the folder. Previously, FeedStation had been good with puctuation that was not permissible in a folder name (it had turned a colon into an underscore), but this time it looks like both FeedStation and I were a little confused (I wasn't aware of the "no period at the end of a folder name" rule, myself).

Perhaps in the future, FeedStation could do a better job of trimming trailing periods to avoid the above scenario?

Feature request - choose download location every time

I often download different podcasts for my wife and I. Some for me, some for my wife. After downloading the week's podcasts I then have to remember what was for whom. Instead of manually re-filing after downloading all of them, I would find it very useful if, in Feedstation's options dialog, there was an option to "prompt for save location" - so that I could be prompted for every download. Would this be possible at all?

Are there any detailed instructions for this product? As I find it as clear as mud.

Error synching

In FeedStation, I am getting the following error:

Error synching: Device Not Found

I am trying to automatically sync my podcasts with iTunes. I see that the file is downloaded to my iPod drive and a Playlist is created in iTunes, but the file is not loaded in my Playlist. Any ideas?

duplicate downloads

In the past few weeks Feedstation version 2.6.0.21 has started double downloading podcasts but without any consistency that I can follow and in addition it is saving that second download in a shortened folder name. So for example I have it set to automatically grab the files from http://mahalodaily.blip.tv/rss/itunes

This is one of the feeds it seems to have a fairly regular problem. So it saves the normal downloads into a folder named "Mahalo Daily apple feed". The duplicate download is saved into a folder named "Mahalo".

The duplicate download is always saved into a shortened version of the original feed download folder.

I reduced the amount of history to save, but that doesn't help.

Is it possible that the history file got munged up? I have had a few recent problems with unexpected reboots and I'm thinking maybe the history file or something got messed up.

I'm using FeedDemon/FeedStation on a Window 2000 Pro (all security updates to present). I know it's an old OS, but works well and I don't see a reason FeedStation would suddenly have this problem.

Any thoughts?

More Configurability Needed

I recently tried to use FeedStation for the first time, but unless I missed an options dialog it seems very limited in functionality, or at least intended for something different than what I expected?

The biggest problem I've run into is the inability (that I can find) to limit the number of enclosures to keep for a specific feed. I'd like to only keep the last 3, or 5, or 30, or whatever enclosures for each of the feeds I have set to automatically download. This would let the software take care of itself without me having to worry about filling up a hard drive. And being able to set a total size limit, or per feed size limit would be handy too.

Other stuff I'd like to see is more advanced synchronization features, bittorrent downloads, cleanup of old episodes, deletion of episodes after synching, grouping of the queue by feed, and everything else implemented in a rich podcatcher.

Except I'm not sure FeedStation is supposed to be a full-featured podcatcher? The only reason I'm trying to use it as such is because I REALLY like having all my feeds in one central place that I can access with multiple clients. If you really wanted to be clever you could apply the standard Newsgator functionality (read once, gets marked as read on for all clients ie synchronization) to podcasts, though I'm not sure how this would work/look.

Am I trying to use FeedStation for something it's not intended for, in which case I need to find another client, or is the development just really behind schedule?

Double download

Long time NGI user, and somewhat long time FeedStation user. I recently migrated to a new PC and have noticed the strange behaviour of having two copies of the downloaded podcasts in my podcasts directory. One in the download folder, and another in a folder under the download directory. For example:

Podcasts\Illumination
Podcasts\Settings
Podcasts\IlluminationRadio34.mp3
Podcasts\Justified Ancients of Mu Mu - It's Grim Up North Part 1.mp3

FeedStation doesn't recognize "other devices" for Podcast sync'ing

Hi -

Long time FeedDemon user here (even paying! :-) ) - 2.7. I've just started to use FeedStation to sync Podcasts, and see that I can't select my MP3 player as a device to sync to.

Selecting Tools/Options from FeedStation, and then the "Podcasts" tab I select "This folder" under "After downloading a podcast, copy it to". Notice though that the portable device doesn't show up in the Browse dialog offered by FeedStation, as in below:

Looking at "My Computer" via Windows Explorer, I see this:

Can FeedStation only sync to mapped drives? Ideally I'd like to sync these podcasts to the Samsung portable device that you see in the latter list.

FeedStation continually pops open in Windows

Anyone have this issue? I've had FeedDemon for well over a year and recently just upgraded to 2.6. Now, no matter what I do FeedStation pops up (the FeedStationUI opens) and it's driving me nuts!

I've checked several options and nothing seems to help. I select "Minimize to Tray" and it opens again (with nothing new).

Fails to connect to My Podcasts

So, I just started asking FeedDemon to grab podcasts with FeedStation. It's very intrusive!

First problem: It keeps telling me it can't talk to "My Podcasts." I don't see such a folder in NewsGator. And FeedDemon doesn't seem to be having any trouble with the synchronization activity. Also, note the error below in the Error log of FeedStation.

Second problem: Related to #1 - All downloads fail. "Failed - click to restart" and I have no idea which ones are failing, as there is no useful information provided in the list.

Third problem: It is incredibly intrusive. Just do your thing. Stop popping up to tell me your are working.

Fourth problem: Can I tell FeedDemon / FeedStation to just download anything new - rather than everything available in the podcast? (when I set automatically "download enclosures")

Feature Request: Execute command/program after download

Feature Request: Bittorrent?

I think this has been mentioned a few years back, but I'd like to put it forth again. I'd like to see bittorrent folded into feedstation at some point. I have found the experience that feedstation gives is an enhancement to the Feeddemon experience and I would very much like to see bittorrent add to the feature list. I feel that it would not only benefit the end user but pod and Vid casters as well. Giving readers a client that helps in giving them a more seamless experience to the content available to them. And the Pod and Vid casters an effective distribution tool that would help them with rising costs of bandwidth.

Fails to download, but which one?

FeedStation is having trouble getting downloads, and I don't understand why. If someone can help troubleshoot, I would appreciate it. I haven't seen a pattern.

But it is hard to discern a pattern when I cannot determine what feed failed. Normally, when a podcast is downloading, I can get the full url by selecting the item in question. However, when the podcast fails and I "click here to try again." I lose all information. Note in the image below I've selected a "queued" item. But the status bar at the bottom -- nothing. This happens for all failed podcasts.

Feedstation (through feeddemon) will not download the nbc nightly news podcasts. It initially adds it to the download list, but then the file name disappears and it status eventually is set to failed to download.

I know there were problems in the past with this feed, any ideas what is the problem now?

Using Feedstation with NewsGator Online

I've just had need of this feature and can't see it anywhere in the new NewsGator online UI. Is it still possible to do this?

Error synching new .Net Rocks! podcast to WMP

If I add the .NET Rocks! podcast feed http://feeds.feedburner.com/netRocksWmadirect to FeedStation (and there is no existing .NET Rocks! playlist in WMP), then I get these errors in the error log:

Error synching http://perseus.franklins.net/dotnetrocks_0308_aaron_skonnard.wma: WMP playlist error

If I manually add the playlist ".NET Rocks!" to WMP, then right-click on one of the failed items in FeedStation and choose "Resync to media device", then it does work.

I think the problem is that the COM apis for WMP don't like you trying to create a playlist with funny characters in the name, even though you can do it through directly in the WMP UI.

You might need to sanitize the playlist name before you try to create it.

FeedStation Confusion

Love the Outlook interface, been a user for a couple of years. However I'm having some difficulty setting up feedstation the way I'd like. Here is what I'm trying to do.

I'd like to set outlook up to automatically download attachments, but make them visible to media player. (hence the need for feedstation)

I have two problems that I can't seem to figure,

First, I have to turn off the automatic attachment download option for all feeds. Unfortunately, this means I no longer can access the podcasts through outlook. Or else I get double copies

Second, when I set up feedstation, it downloads podcasts fine but makes a sub-directory for each podcast in a different directory. While this is a minor problem, it is a bit annoying to always have to clean up all the folders in MyFeedStation directory. I'd usually delete the audio files in media player but I'm still left with the empty directory.

Is this the way it's suppose to work or is there a configuration option(s) that I'm missing?

Controlling Bandwidth

Is it possible to control the amount of bandwidth used by FeedStation?
When it is downloading, it sucks up all my available bandwidth and I can't do anything else online. I would love to be able to cap it so I can still do other things online while the podcasts trickle in.
(I currently have it configured to do 2 simultaneous downloads on a 1.5 Mb/sec DSL line.)

I tried deleting the Playlist and recreating it, not to avail.
It used to work in my machine, but suddenly stop working (maybe with one 2.5 beta, don't know exactly)

Now running 2.5 RTM, Windows Vista and WMP 11

any ideas?

FeedStation is re-downloading the same podcasts to my second PC

Can someone help me better understand how FeedStation works? I have the application installed on my laptop and on my desktop. I queued up about 20 podcasts for download on my laptop. After about half of these were downloaded, I powered the laptop off. On my desktop PC, I launched FeedStation. Almost immediately, it began downloading not only the remaining podcasts, but also the ones that had already been downloaded to my laptop. Is this the expected behavior?

In my case, I don't mind that all podcasts are downloaded to both devices. I already use Microsoft's Internet-based FolderShare product to keep certain directories in sync between my laptop and my desktop PC. If I use FolderShare to sync the ..\My FeedStation Podcasts directories, will FeedStation skip the files that get sync'd? Or will it still try to download them?

feedstation and i-tunes don't like each other

I went into the feeddemon / feedstation help files and I can get the podcast from newsgator, add it to my podcasts, download it into feedstation but the file never quite makes it into i-tunes I have tried all of your help files and everything else I can think of.

Can I Trick FeedDemon/FeedStation into Downloading Podcasts Again?

I've just accidentally deleted several days of podcasts and would like to trick FeedDemon into thinking today is actually several days ago to force it to redownload everything for the last few days. Is there any way to do this?

I'm guessing the fields to change are some of the date fields in the Feeds/*.RSS or Subscriptions.opml files, but I don't want to guess. Can anyone give me some pointers?

Podcast to iPod

I have FeedStation set to copy podcasts to a folder after downloading. It's set to I:\ (my iPod). This works fine but how do I find and listen to the podcast? It doesn't show up in the Podcast category under Music.

I am a new user of Feedstation. I don't know how to retrieve or download the podcasts that I have selected on the internet site www.newsgator.com.

I have tried to lunch the function "Check My Podcasts Now" from the menu Options but I can only read in the lower bar "no new items in my podcasts".

Could someone highlight the procedure to get Feedstation to retrieve all or some of the podcasts that have been suscribed to. These podcasts are listed on the panel "My Feeds" from the Newsgator manager.
