Forum Login Issues

It has come to our attention that folks who log out of the forums can no longer get back in by clicking on the Login button. However, you can use the [url=http://forum.newsgator.com/Logon.aspx]direct link[/url] to the login page to log back in if necessary.

We are working to resolve the issue. In the meantime, please do not log out.

NewsGator Forums OPML

To use this file, right-click on it and save it to your computer then use the import function of your newsreader.

Alternatively, if you using a feed reader that supports import from URL, you can copy the URL of the attachment below (i.e. Right-click, Copy Shortcut) and paste that into your reader.

Brief Interruption of Some Services

We experienced a brief interruption of some services over the weekend. Some users may have noticed their read/unread states out of sync, and some slowness and possibly timeouts beginning around 9:30 a.m. and lasting until approximately 10:40 a.m. yesterday.

We apologize for this disruption of service.

Deleted Feeds

We had an issue this week, where several feeds were deleted from customer accounts. We were able to resolve the problem fairly quickly, and restore the lost feeds. However, we were unable to place the feeds back in their respective folders. Users who were affected would need to place the feeds back in the original folder themselves, and set up any custom naming convention they had in place.

PROBLEM: When a client such as FeedDemon or NetNewsWire requested the subscription list from NewsGator Online, the command itself was not updated to reflect the new subscription list, and the clients, on second pass, deleted the subscription without any notification, because the notification had already been given.

Any clipped items would not have been affected by this problem, but all flagged items and the read/unread states for all articles within the feed was lost.

Fortunately, it affected only a small number of users. We have taken steps to prevent this from re-occurring, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

NewsGator Production Maintenance

NewsGator will be conducting regular system maintenance this Friday, 18 Jan 2008, starting at 2200 MST and lasting until 0200 MST. No disruption in services is expected, however as with all maintenance the possibility exists that some brief or sporadic issues may be observed during this time frame. NewsGator will be working diligently to complete all maintenance with as little impact to customers as possible.

NewsGator clients are now FREE!

That's right, you can now get the market-leading RSS Readers for Microsoft Outlook, PC, Mac, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry/Java for free. Install them on any machine, or give them to friends and family.

As part of this change, Newsgator Support is going to evolve in look, feel and function. Our support forums are now going to be Community Forums. As the number of users grow, there is no better support than other people who have had the same or similar problem and found a solution. Support will still be involved in the forum, but as one of many people who can answer a question, rather than the primary source of information.

We'll be investing more time in creating resources so that customers can find the answers they are looking for. This means more knowledge base articles, help files, and screencasts. If you have something that you think should be better documented, we'd love you to submit a suggestion in our Community Forums. We will be phasing out end-user support via email.

We are extremely excited about this new direction, and we have more information available on the Free NewsGator Consumer RSS Readers - Frequently Asked Questions page.

Delayed Atom Content

During a recent upgrade to the NewsGator Content servers, a bug was introduced to the ATOM parser that stopped new ATOM feeds from being retrieved for 72 hours. RSS feeds were unaffected.

ANN: NNW 3.1b21 - Now with added Leopard!

We have some major changes included in NetNewsWire 3.1b21 including a new Combined View, Leopard changes and fixes, and a bunch of bug fixes.

The new Combined View is designed for better readability and skim-ability. It also breaks lots of news items up into pages, so that performance doesn’t suffer when trying to load hundreds or thousands of items at once.

Leopard changes include things like using the new folder icon in the subscriptions list and using the new dock badge standard.

ANN TopStyle 3.5 Final Release

At long last, the final release of TopStyle 3.5 is now available. We hope you enjoy the new version!

As you can see from the release notes, version 3.5 isn't a minor upgrade - it offers a ton of new features, improvements and fixes. It could easily have been called TopStyle 4.0, but customers have been waiting a long time for a new TopStyle, so we've named it v3.5 and made it a free upgrade from v3.x

To get it, just stop by the TopStyle Registered Download page, then enter the serial number you received if you purchased TopStyle through NewsGator. If you purchased through another online store (such as RegNow), enter the email address you used when you placed your order. Note that there's no need to uninstall the previous 3.x version before upgrading - just install v3.5 directly on top of it.

Top five new features in TopStyle 3.5:

Box Spy - exposes an HTML tag's margins, padding and content box as you mouse over it in the preview

Things to note:

At a minimum you will need the .NET compact Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 (it has to be SP 2 or better)
If you are using Windows Vista, you will need to install using the CAB files (either copy the CAB over to your device or fetch from your device browser). There is an issue with the desktop installer on Vista.

New Mobile Reader URL and iPhone Reader

Today we are happy to announce several leaps forward in the NewsGator Mobile HTML reader.

Firstly, we have changed the URL to a new, easier to access format. User are now able to go to http://m.newsgator.com and enter credentials to access their feeds. This replaces the PIN-based model, and allows for easier typing on a Mobile device.

Second, we have developed a version of the mobile reader specifically for the iPhone. This version is optimized for the iPhone touch-screen and the resolution. The URL above will automatically detect that it is being accessed from an iPhone (as will the regular NewsGator reader) and redirect to the iPhone-specific version.

Finally, we have made the NewsGator Mobile HTML reader availabel to all users. Free users, as well as Premium, will have full access to m.newsgator.com

We have moved the forum out of the clustered environment - this means that the sessioning issues we have seen should no longer occur. Since we've moved the software, there may be a few teething issues. Please report any problem in the NewsGator Online forum.

Forum Restructure

Due to both our active forum community, and our influx of supported products, over the next few days we will be restructuring the NewsGator Forum.

In an effort to reduce both confusion and the number of forum areas that are available, we will be consolidating forums (combining Feature Requests and Technical Support) and changing our groupings.

All Technical Support posts, as well as the Feature Requests from the last 3 months, will be available in the new forums. Older feature requests will be moved to an "Obsolete" area at the bottom of the forums, and will still be searchable.

We thank you for your patience during this time.

New Betas: NewsGator Inbox and Toolbar

We have a number of exciting new betas available, and would love feedback.

Firstly, we have the latest version of NewsGator Inbox, version 2.6.7.412 - This build mainly concentrates on bug fixes and performance enhancements, but also consolidates both the Client and Enterprise versions creating a stable platform on which to add new features. Feedback is welcomed in the NewsGator Inbox Beta Forum.

Our second beta is a new version of the NewsGator Toolbar. New features include:

Ability to clip any webpage (whether it is a post or not) to your online clippings
Ability to set default clippings folder
Ability to set default subscription folder in NewsGator Online
Turn discussions feature on/off
The ability to try and find feeds on pages that do not have Auto-discovery enabled.

Forum Email is now working

We recently had some Activation emails from the Forum go astray. This has now been fixed. If you tried to register a forum account and have not received you confirmation email, please use the Resend Email Validation page.

Retrieving passwords will now also work.

Read State issues - resolved

The problem experienced today with NewsGator Online and FeedDemon marking individual posts as read has been resolved.

For NewsGator Inbox, we have created a service release (2.6.7) which needs to be installed to resolve this. Assuming that you have the default “check for updates” alerts set, you should automatically get a message prompting you for the new version. To expedite this, in Outlook: select NewsGator Inbox | Check for Updates. NetNewsWire and Go! were not affected by this.

The problem was caused by these clients referencing the ID’s of posts as signed 32 bit integers (the max of this number is approx 2.1 billion). Today, the number of posts in our system exceeded this amount. While our core platform supported this, several of our clients, as mentioned above, didn’t account for it.

Read State issues

We are currently experiencing some issues when marking individual posts as read. This is effecting NewsGator Online, FeedDemon and NewsGator Inbox.

In NewsGator Online, the post is marked as read, but on refresh it is unread again. For the clients, posts will be marked as read locally, but the changes will not be synced to the platform. Additionally, some errors may be reported by NGI - these are related.

Work Around:
The "Mark Feed Read" call is working for all programs. Please use this option as an alternative to individually marking posts as read.

We are currently working on a patch for NewsGator Inbox, and a back-end fix for NewsGator Online and FeedDemon. We will announce when these are in place.

MarsEdit has a new home!

We anticipate that this will dramatically accelerate new releases of the product, and is in the best interests of our current and future users. Service Speed Restored

The problem was caused by an API call that is used by the clients to retrieve data. We have updated this procedure, and the clients are now receiving information.

We are currently experiencing some problems with the Mark As Read functionality in NewsGator Online. Products effected:

NewsGator Online

Client Products (FeedDemon, NewsGator Inbox, NetNewsWire, Go!)

Some Mark Feed as Read functions are still working as expected.

This is currently being investigated by our platform Engineers (Case 82164). The announcement will be updated when this issue is resolved.

Increased Online reading and Sync Capabilities

This morning we introduced a change to the NewsGator Platform that will allow much greater syncing and reading capabilities. Our definition of what is "current" is no longer restricted to the contents of the source feed, but will adhere to the following rules:

We will always keep what the publisher has as “current” in their feed up to a maximum of 200 items
In addition to what the publisher has kept as current, we will keep up to two weeks of historical entries up to a limit of 200 items
Starting from today, we will begin accumulating beyond what is in the source feed – it will not be retroactive
When a user subscribes to a feed, they will start with what the publisher has as “current” in source feed - they won't be bombarded with 200 posts ;)

These rules do not apply to SLE feeds

Since this starts today, you should see a steady improvement in sync capabilities going forward. It also means than people who do not leave their client on 24x7 may see more posts, and users of our web reader wil see more posts in high-traffic feeds.

This has been a much requested feature, and feedback is most welcome in the NewsGator Online Feature Request Forum.
