How Booting Works

This procedure may differ slightly for Mac, UNIX, OS/2, or other operating systems. When you turn on your computer, chances are that the operating system has been set up to boot (load into RAM) automatically in this sequence:

As soon as the computer is turned on, the basic input-output system (BIOS) on system's read-only memory (ROM) chip is "woken up" and takes charge. BIOS is already loaded because it's built-in to the ROM chip and, unlike random access memory (RAM), ROM contents don't get erased when the computer is turned off. BIOS first does a power-on self test (POST) to make sure all the computer's components are operational. Then the BIOS's boot program looks for the special boot programs that will actually load the operating system onto the hard disk. First, it looks on drive A (unless you've set it up some other way or there is no diskette drive) at a specific place where operating system boot files are located. If there is a diskette in drive A but it's not a system disk, BIOS will send you a message that drive A doesn't contain a system disk. If there is no diskette in drive A (which is the most common case), BIOS looks for the system files at a specific place on your hard drive. Having identified the drive where boot files are located, BIOS next looks at the first sector (a 512-byte area) and copies information from it into specific locations in RAM. This information is known as the boot record or Master Boot Record.

It then loads the boot record into a specific place (hexadecimal address 7C00) in RAM. The boot record contains a program that BIOS now branches to, giving the boot record control of the computer. The boot record loads the initial system file (for example, for DOS systems, IO.SYS) into RAM from the diskette or hard disk. The initial file (for example, IO.SYS, which includes a program called SYSINIT) then loads the rest of the operating system into RAM. (At this point, the boot record is no longer needed and can be overlaid by other data.) The initial file (for example, SYSINIT) loads a system file (for example, MSDOS.SYS) that knows how to work with the BIOS. One of the first operating system files that is loaded is a system configuration file (for DOS, it's called CONFIG.SYS). Information in the configuration file tells the loading program which specific operating system files need to be loaded (for example, specific device driver. Another special file that is loaded is one that tells which specific applications or commands the user wants to have included or performed as part of the boot process. In DOS, this file is named AUTOEXEC.BAT. In Windows, it's called WIN.INI. After all operating system files have been loaded, the operating system is given control of the computer and performs requested initial commands and then waits for the first interactive user input.

Greetings Gator Fans!

Am trying to adjust News Gator site prefs so that only THAT days feeds download to iPhone while earlier feeds are automatically deleted.

I currently have over 8000 feeds stored in my flash memory and it's crashing my iPhone OS. They just keep piling up. Any kind news junkies out there have any suggestions?

RSS organizational tips. . being buried by an avalanche!

So I've figured out that it's way better to get all of my news and updates via RSS than email, so as I've switched my information over to predominately RSS, I have been starting to feel information overload. I currently have 81 feeds (some updated multiple times daily, some updated once a month), and have been trying to organize them by topic. But it's just getting to be too much to handle all of these feeds! I regularly have several hundred new stories waiting in my feed if i wait even just a few hours.

I have tried reducing the update interval and turning some of my less important to longer update intervals. But I'm really interested in what others are doing (with NetNewsWire or equivalent) to stay informed but not buried by all of their news.

Thanks for any tips you can give!

although this is a "user to user" forum, I'll post my request here, as there is no fitting forum for it. -.-
And that's the topic also. :D I do miss a "General" forum. More precisely: A "Newsgator Company" forum, which should be maybe also titled like that. What I'd post in such a forum would be general feedback and request to the Newsgator company and the Newsgator employees. As well as praise and compliments of course! ;) :D

For example, I currently discovered the website "Get Satisfaction" and I'm a avid user since then, since I only have to remember a single, simple domain and have a more consistent and comfortable way of giving feedback, ask for help or give help myself! :) And I'd really like to see the Newsgator company using this platform for their products too! :)

A few things that keep bugging me, but never enough to remember to post here:

1. In the notification e-mail for new posts:

2. Does InstantForum.NET support setting the subject line of the e-mail to the subject line of the thread in question? That would be nice. I think in most forum programs, that's a template somewhere.

3. Does InstantForum.NET support adding "Default topic notification type" to the user Control Panel? I'd like to be able to set mine to "Instant notification" instead of "do not subscribe".

4. It'd be nice to allow .xml files as attachments, since that's what we're usually uploading, and they're safe. I'm pretty sure that's configurable.

FireFox 2.0.0.9 Tabs Issue---Help Please.

Due to performance issues, I recently reinstalled FF 2.0.0.9.

Anyway, I'm still tweaking the settings to where I like them. I'm really hoping someone can help me out with this slight problem.

When I click on a link, I only want it to open in a new tab if the link takes me to another site. If the link is to a page within the same site, I want it to open in the same window.

Example...

I'm at the homepage of whatever online newspaper. When I click on an article link, I want the article to open in the same window, not in a new tab. However, if I click on a link that takes me to another site, I'd like it to open in a new tab.

As of now, every link I'm clicking opens a new tab.

I'm pretty sure, my previous install of FF had the settings I wanted. What am I missing? Thank you for any help.

P.S.

I've checked the Tabs tab in the Options menu of FF for the correct configuration. No luck there.

I've got a question, especially to Mr. McDougall. (I wasn't able to PM / e-mail you, did you disable it in your case?)

I was following some of the ideas around FeedDemon now for a while and of course, if one idea is good, you often state [i]"I've added a feature request"[/i]. Ok.
Now as I'm curious, [b]where do you put those?[/b] Do you have a special dev-forum / wiki or what happens with them?
I'd somehow like to get a more detailed insight in the interesting development process of FeedDemon and it's planned features. Is this possible or did I miss something?

We are looking for an easy way to instruct our clients to use and create RSS feeds on their sites. Some sites are static and are updated by FTP which overwrites the older files. Is there a (Mac) & Windows program which enables the client to create and upload their feeds?

Any Way To Avoid Yahoo's NHL Local Blackout?

So, I live in NYC and don't have cable tv and am a huge Rangers fan. Is there anyway I can circumvent the Yahoo restriction that prohibits me from viewing local NHL games when they broadcast them via the net?

It's great that I can watch whatever other games they offer, but it would be nice to also see my local team.

Fixing my IE ?

Problem is when i login from computer admin account my IE and YM does not work ..w/o giving any error message it just show "not responding "

but when i login from guest account it work perfectly ...

relative position of Widget in SWT

i have just started working with SWT , and now i need to get relative position of a child widget w.r.t. its parent, i have added 2 Group component in a shell Widget , when getting the relative position using getClient() metohds of Group, return a Rectangle and from that Rectangle i got the height , width and position x,y . HERE the Problem is that both of the Group Component gives the same hight , width and x,y position, for hight and width its ok , but in case of x,y position , i think x,y position of Both the component should be different for both of the Groups ????, Even the same problem facing with Tree and TreeItems etc ... where my understanding is wrong , i am using the following code to associate these Groups with shell widget
