I finally found a reader that integrates well with outlook and has ability to syncronize read status. However, without offline usage it is nearly useless.

Going back to Viigo for mobile.
*** shame.

RE: Offline Use

I hear you and I sincerely apologize for leaving this thread untouched for the past few months. You may be aware of the recent changes we have made on the consumer side where all of our consumer products are now free. As you can imagine this has left us very busy around here.

Unfortunately we will not be adding this feature in the near term, unless there is a demand from our Enterprise clients to do so. We apologize for this inconvenience.

RE: Offline Use

I wanted to add my plug to this as well, this is something we need. I left NGG b/c of this feature but would be back in a heartbeat with an offline reader. One key aspect is space, as has been noted, please see if you can get an option to write all of NGG data to the external storage card (ie, microSD).

RE: Offline Use

Hi All,

Just wanted to throw my two cents in for the love/need/want of offline access on the mobile.

Ideally I wanted to be able to download the headlines to my phone, clip the ones I need while on the subway/plane etc. This would then sync with the online reader and my home NetNewsWire program so that when I get to work/home I'm ready to check the stuff that matters.

Plllleeeeaaaase add this functionality.

Cheers.

RE: Offline Use

Keith,

Last response to this request was on 9/25/2007. Anything new regarding this highly requested feature?

I'm currently evaluating NGG! and I'm glad I found out about the lack of global-update for offline use before I made my purchase.
I currently use Viigo (freeware) and they allow Update-All that pulls all my subscribed feeds whenever I want it to.
Getting 4-5 feeds is a nice workaround but probably won't satisfy international travelers (sadly I'm used to 8-11 hour flights...)
When Viigo does that it takes 5-15 seconds to update the entire feedbase (~25 on mine) with new content (their Update-All brings full content not just description).

I really wanted to switch to NGG! from Viigo as I like the NGG! interface/navigation better but unless I know it is coming very soon I'll have to hold off.

Anything new (even if beta) planned for December?

Thanks,
Ix

RE: Offline Use

Can you please send a request to support@newsgator.com? I will need your username so that I can find your account. The reader itself is only $30 so you must have purchased it in a bundle with a desktop application.

Keep in mind that we are pushing hard for a better offline reading experience. This is a new product, less than a year old, and we aim to make it ideal for the daily commuter and business traveler. We apologize for not having all of these features in place at first launch, but hope to have that remedied in the near future.

RE: Offline Use

I have been trying to live with the the lack of offline fetching but it renders the Go! application almost useless to me. The point of a newsreader to me is to be able to read news in off-times. I am really disappointed and I feel like I just wasted $45USD. Can I get a refund ?

Mark

RE: Offline Use

This is a feature that we are pushing to the forefront for the next major release. We do not have an estimate for when this next release will be.

Our goal is to give the user two to three hours of offline reading time. We would also like to make this feature somewhat customizable for the individual user. This use case is helpful since everyone's traveling/commuting habits are likely different.

RE: Offline Use

I'm a new Blackberry Go! user. On a related note, I don't understand why Go! doesn't download headers (not entire posts) automatically when I have service, like say, FreeRange Newsreader does. If it can't be made to do this, then the program is really not worth it to me, since I am in and out of cell service all day. I need to have the headlines waiting for me when I get on the subway, etc.

This is provided of course that Go! has been running in the background on my blackberry (pearl).

I hope my terminology is correct. Please advise.

Mark

RE: Offline Use

I have just added this as a feature request. This feature request is quickly becoming a priority as more and more people are requesting it. Can we have this as an option?

RE: Offline Use

Space was the original concern. We limited the number of articles retrieved to 50 per feed because of spatial concerns, and because we wanted to get a product out that worked for the typical user. Now that we have a solid base to grow from, we are considering more user-tailorable options.

FeedDemon does have a prefetch feature that will download images and text, if they are available in the feed. This is exactly the type of thing that we are considering for Go!, minus the images of course.

RE: Offline Use

I would like to see something like this as well. I can't really use GO in the subway since it doesn't download the articles. As far as the amount of content being downloaded, does FeedDemon not DL the images and articles etc for OFFLINE? In other words, can you not use a similar implementation?

If it's a space issue, I"m not sure that's a concern. I removed alot of the language packs off of my blackberry... as in all of them but English, and now my free space went from about 8 megs to about 28 megs.

RE: Offline Use

I apologize for the long delay in responding. I have been pretty busy lately and was unable to get back to the forums for any length of time.

At the moment there is no built-in feature that would allow you to prefetch whole or even partial articles for offline reading. I did bring this idea up with the developers as a possible 3.0 direction. They seemed receptive and are considering the programming obstacles.

To be honest, it would be impossible to download every article from every feed for offline reading. But, it may be possible to specify 3 - 5 feeds to be prefetched, which could conceivably be 150 - 250 articles.

The goal that I was shooting for is to give the user about two hours worth of offline reading material. This would satisfy most commuters traveling through dead spots as well as business travelers on the go.

RE: Offline Use

Keith, from a useability stand point, lets say i am about to get on a plane or go into a tunnel, or somthing where i am going to loose coverage for the forseeable future and i would like to read posts offline, how would i do this? if you could walk me through the steps that would be appricated. If i cant read the full article thats fine, can i at least read the full post? How do i go about downloading all the unread posts before i go dark?

Thank you.

RE: Offline Use

Thanks!
Is there a way to download the entire post, or summary of all posts automatically?

RE: Offline Use

The mobile reader will not retrieve whole articles for every post automatically.
