hi, newsgator is great for the iPhone. But on feeds like reddit.com I cannot click on the [link] or [comments] link. Comments are most important there.

Hi guys,

I use the mobile newsgator version in browsers because the PC is slightly slow, and I much prefer being able to read an entire folder in one plain page than the Javascripty regular Newsgator.

However, I can now only log in with Safari and IE 7 -- if I try to log in with Firefox, I get an "Invalid username or password" error, even when the details are correct. Any ideas?

Ever since I got my iPhone and started looking a bit deeper into all the available apps for it, I was struck by one thing that was very, very obviously missing: a solid feed-reader. Reading feeds on the iPhone is one of *the best* uses of the device IMHO, and seeing as how I am a FeedDemon addict as well as a "big fan" of Newsgator's beta web-based reader, it was only natural to wait and expect the fine folks at Newsgator to cook up an iPhone specific version of the web-based reader. Just a few days after this idea got into my head, I read multiple blog posts about my wish having been granted: Newsgator released an iPhone-specific feed reader! I was overjoyed at the news, raved about it for days, and tried to infect friends with my enthusiasm about the news. The fact that I can now read feeds in FeedDemon at home, in the web-based reader at work (like right now!) and now ALSO wherever the *** I happen to be using the iPhone and that all of them always stay perfectly in sync with each other is the reason man came up with the word "fantastic".

It's been a solid week since the news broke and I set the iPhone reader up on my phone, and can you believe that I am just as excited still as I was the day the iPhone reader landed?

I can't even explain why I'm so excited. I suppose it's because Newsgator's iPhone reader reminded me very clearly about just why I got an iPhone in the first place :D

This thread has one purpose, and one purpose only: to send a BIG THANK YOU to the geniuses at Newsgator!

All I need is the ability to read My Clippings!

Firstly thanks so much for all the NetNewsWire/iPhone integration! :D

I've been struggling with Google Reader on my Macs & iPhone for quite a while. I've only been using it just to be able to keep everything synced, without realising you had the whole solution tied up for NetNewsWire & the iPhone.

Here are some things I find myself wanting/needing on the iPhone reader:

[b]All Feeds View:[/b]
All feeds shown continuously so we don't have to keep moving in & out of different folders.

[b]Mark as Read & Go to Next Article:[/b]
I find myself almost always marking an item as read & wanting to move on to the next article. I guess the actual title or button in the reader should be something like 'Read/Next', 'Read ->Next' or something short like that, & placed below each article.

[b]Clip & Mark as Read link:[/b]
I also tend to clip a lot of articles I like the look of but want to read later when I'm back on a Mac (with a larger screen than the iPhone). If it looked too cramped up at the top along with Read, Clip & Email it could be below each clip?

[b]View Clips:[/b]
The ability to view previously clipped clips.

[b]New Folder Icons:[/b]
Use iPhone or Leopard folder icons rather than the dated old style Mac folders.

[b]Change the Blue Link Colour:[/b]
The 'Google or Web1.0' blue link colour hurts my eyes (It's even used in iPhone Mail emails :pinch: ). How about something easier on the eyes like the colour of dates for iPhone Mail emails?

Mobile site very useful on ASUS Eee and OLPC XO

Just a note -- with the NewsGator Online main site going through a Javascript-heavy upgrade, I've been finding m.newsgator.com more and more useful. I've been regularly using it on both my ASUS Eee and OLCP XO mini-laptops, and it works very well and is generally much faster than the main site. Using it with Opera running on the Eee is great, as I can quickly move through links using Shift+Arrow.

I'm still looking forward to the update that will show feed names when viewing a folder... I'm also very interested in a fix that will let you view all feeds at once, regardless of folders. In NGO, you can do it by clicking on "My Feeds", but there's no way to do that in the mobile reader.

clippings on iPhone

This seems like the most obvious feature- I know it's been said that you guys are working on it, but does the whole backend need to be rebuilt or something?
The workaround method posted elsewhere on this forum is pretty useless as my clippings feed only picks up what I have clipped HOURS later.
Please excuse the tone of this post- but it's been months, and it seems like all it would take is a looksee at the google reader model to see what would be considered essential, featurewise.
Thank you for your otherwise great product- which I recommend daily.

cannot stay logged in

I upgraded to 1.1.4 yesterday and since then safari keeps asking me to sign in when I have already logged in. Tried clearing cookies, set to accept cookies always, nothing works. any idea how i can fix this?

Email doesn't work for all feeds

On the iPhone, when I select Email, a new blank email message pops up starting with the 'Message from NewsGator subscriber' and 'Post from NewsGator.com iPhone:'.

For some feeds (High-Def Digest for example - http://feeds.feedburner.com/highdefdigestallnews), the articles the correctly appears below the link - everything is good. However, other feeds (SciFi Wire for example - http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/rss/index.xml), neither the articles nor a link is in the email. Why?

I use m.newsgator.com almost every day on my Motorola Q smartphone running Windows Mobile 6 on the Verizon network. It's such a nice convenience! However, right now when I view the unread articles for a feed, they all appear on one page. Sometimes there's a hundred or so! There's no way I can read all those at once, so I can't mark any as read.

Please restrict the number of articles per page to 20 or so.

Even better would be to add a preference in my newsgator.com account, where I could set the number of articles per page. This would be under Settings -> Edit Locations -> NewsGator Mobile Edition -> Configure link. Right now that link only gives me one preference, "Only display excerpts."

Feature Request:iPhone Reader sort ordering

Hello there, I just started using the iPhone Reader this week and [b]really[/b] love it! There are a couple of thigs that I thought would be really useful as options that could be set in the Accounts page online.

1. Allow me to set the sort ordering for items as in the web version
2. Allow me to set the links as 'open new tab' or 'replace in tab' on global scale
3. Also allow the default full text of the post version as in the web interface
4. Perhaps button somewhere (at top of first window) to see and change options for iPhone?

These would, for me, make it completely and totally awesome!

Why is there a new page initiated for every folder or article that I click on?

Previously I used to get a brief description and option to collapse or expand within the same page. Now, I am taken to a new page and when I click on Page Read, another new page is created. Is there a setting to stop this - its driving me batty!

For several days now I have not been able to login from my iPod touch. I have also tried to login to mnewsgator.com from my desktop and cannot do so.

Is anybody else having problems ?

I never get a response not matter if I type my correct account and password or just a made up account.

Would it be possible to edit the stylesheet at http://m.newsgator.com/css/mobile.css to specify that browsers should use Helvetica before Arial? The iPhone interface feed titles and buttons are in Helvetica, but the post content is displayed in Arial.

I'm coming over from google reader and all is well, except...
It seems when I clip an item- it takes far too for it to show up in my "my clippings" folder.
Even if I clip an item from my iPhone- then go check newsgator via the web- it doesn't display the items I just clipped for a few hours. With Google reader's "stars" - the moment you star an item, it's reflected instantly on both mobile and web versions.
I hope I'm just missing something- because other than that, the service is great.

given that the ipod touch doesn't do email, should the 'email' link in the feed item list be removed since the link doesn't work?

this is assuming that the iphone and the ipod touch can be identified uniquely when accessing the site

iPhone Reader: Questions and suggestions

Here are a few thought & questions on the iPhone reader from a new NetNewsWire 3 owner.

1) I'm having trouble staying logged into the iPhone client throughout the day. Is your cookie set to expire after a certain time frame?

2) I don't see a way to view all unread items in one combined list, as I can in NetNewsWire. Does this exist? It seems that folders of feeds behave this way, but I don't want to put all my feeds into one high-level folder.

3) Semi-superficial request: can we turn the "Page Read" link into a larger button? It's a commonly used function, and a bigger finger target would be better than just the text. The images you need for an iPhone look-alike button are already in iUI. For an example, look at the [url=http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/iui/]iUI-based portal app I wrote for iLounge.com[/url] (browse to All New Items -> pick a news item, and look at the View Comment button).

Using the S60 Webkit browser. Submitting login credentials returns me to the login page. Using the same user/pass I can view the m.newsgator.com site just fine on Firefox and on my Nokia N800.

Feature request: Slug items with originating feeds

I'd like to request again one addition: That individual items be slugged with the names of originating feeds when reading at folder level. This small change would make reading in a river-of-news format just about perfect.

steps to repro:

with a folder containing one feed (i.e., you've read all other feeds from the folder)...

- open the feed

- from the top bar, touch 'all read'

the UI will go back to the folder list and the folder for the last feed read will show a # representing what it thinks are unread items to the right of the folder name, but there are no unread feeds

note: if you touch 'page read' at the bottom of the feed page instead of 'all read', then the problem doesn't happen

Request: Tweak to help with page caching problem

I often have to manually refresh the page when viewing a folder or a feed on my Treo 755p in order to get the current data. It would be really awesome if you could modify the links so instead of being

http://m.newsgator.com/feeds.aspx?fld=281887&n=Mobile%3a+General

they would instead be

http://m.newsgator.com/feeds.aspx?fld=281887&n=Mobile%3a+General&rnd=2947290

with some ignored bit of data added to the end. This would fix the caching issue in Blazer, since the URL would be different each time the page was generated.

For some reason the mobile version says I haven't enabled it in my account. I did connect to the web page, I configured the mobile version (all the same subscriptions as NetNewsWire).

Still get the same error. Any suggestions?

Sorting Feeds

Maybe I missing something, but if sorting of feeds by date is not currently supported, I sure would like to see it added at some point. Especially if each feed could have it's own sort order. I'm using iPhone.

New Mobile HTML/iPhone Build

here's a list of what you will see in the current reader... enjoy!

• iPhone: nested folder counts are now correct – previously the unread counts on nested folders, deeper than one level below, were incorrect. Made this a recursive operation and it is good now.
• iPhone: client side javascript code fixed for determining folder counts after marking content read - this is a big one as marking posts/pages/folder/etc read was mucking up the counts on the feed list page in some instances.
• iPhone: unread count pill on feed/folder view done w/ css versus image - much faster loading (thanks to wroqv for this one)
• all mobile: server side optimization for getting feed/folder list - was O(n^2) now linear
• iPhone: if read last article and feed/folder has more stuff it now takes you to the next page of content and not back to subscription list
• iPhone: if article has no title could not drill in (anchor tag was empty) – now I take the first N characters from the description to create a title if none exists
• mobile html: login issues for mobile html reader
• iPhone: Fixed problem where clippings were not getting posted
• iPhone: after viewing a folder and navigating back to the feed/folder list the proper location was not being preserved properly – it is handled correctly now

iPhone download speed suggestion

Hey -

NewsGator Mobile on the iPhone is a great product - I use it all the time. I have a minor suggestion that would make my surfing experience over EDGE much better.

You're using image files to generate the dark-gray rounded 'pill' behind the unread counts. That's all fine and dandy, but I'm finding that on slow connections, about half of my download time is spent getting these 3 images. The display of the whole page is delayed while they load.

Luckily, the iPhone's webkit has a nonstandard CSS property that would allow you to get this exact effect with only 1-2 lines of CSS and no images. It's webkit-border-radius, and I think it would reproduce the look of the site with much less overhead. I know nonstandard CSS is scary, but you'll know that everyone viewing the iPhone site will have it.

Again, this is a great mobile reader, and I'm impressed how you guys have improved things over time. Thanks for making my feed reading so easy!

change in iphone reader today? touching [more] results in NULL

this was working yesterday, and I believe this morning as well, but now when I touch the [more] link at the end of a feed item in the feed list, the feed item disappears from the feed list and the word "NULL" appears in it's place instead of displaying the full feed item intro... :w00t:

Hi, great reader.
I just wish we could see the whole feeds without pushing the "more" button. Maybe having this as an option would be great.

Also would be great if we could read news items (full view) one by one and have a next button at the top to skip to the next item.
Having the "next" button at the top is a must, allowing us a quick view of the full feed without scrolling.

There's an option when managing locations that lets me choose if I want the full article or an excerpt.

It looks like the preference is not being saved (and this would be a bugfix request) and I would also like to have an option to only see titles. This would also keep the page size smaller.

One great thing about RSS is that you can take it and reformat as you wish. This allows for mobile applications and mobile RSS readers. This is great.

The problem arises when the RSS feed only provides a portion of the article and you need to click to read the rest. If you do and redirected to a "full web" site, it works OK on the iPhone, probably, but not as well on other browsers.

May I suggest you use Google's GWT or Mowser? This means simply linking the content to go through these open transcoding proxies. Easy to implement, cool for users like me that don't have an iPhone.

All this while we wait for the mobile to overcome the desktop-optimized web sites, of course.

Why not dotMobi?

You own newsgator.mobi (it's public info available via whois), so why use m.newsgator.com instead of newsgator.mobi?

I have used netnewswire for a long time and until I came to the forums I did not know you had a mobile. I tried to access your site using Opera Mini and it was completely un-usable. If I had known you had a mobile version I would have used it for sure.

FYI, I have been testing Google Reader on my mobile because lately I am often traveling, but I still love NetNewsWire and I'd be happy to have a combined functionality to access the feeds on the move and get them updated on the client when I'm at my computer. So far I never really had a reason to use the web interface since I had the GREAT Mac client, but now that there's a mobile version it makes great sense!

So, please, keep it up, but also consider using your .mobi domain in a more profitable way.

ability to view already read items & unclip an item?

While looking at feed items from my ipod touch today, I accidentally pressed the 'read' link for a feed item when I mean to touch the heading to open it - there seemed to be no way to get back to the item to read it after it was marked read. Is the only way to do this is by accessing the full newsgator web interface?

Also, I accidentally clicked the 'clip' link on a feed and there was no way to un-clip it once clipped. since the heading for the feed item changed by removing the 'clip' link, would it be easy to have it just change to an 'unclip' link instead of removing the link completely?

Yesterday, I noticed some changes. Links from articles opening in another window. Great feature. Especially when you click on a link, post a comment, then you can't really just tap the back button without some negative effect. This remedies that.

The second change I noticed was that feeds listed within a folder no longer work correctly. I have 4 feeds within a folder called "News." I used to tap on the News folder and read all the news, then tap on the All Read button. That would hide the News folder as well as all the separate news feeds it contained because they were now all empty. Now it doesn't. I can still see all the separate news feeds that were in that folder, along with their number of unread posts, although now they are all read. When I click on that feed, it tells me "the content for this feed has been read." I have to tap All Read again to make that empty feed disappear.

New URL and iPhone Reader

Today we are happy to announce several leaps forward in the NewsGator Mobile HTML reader.

Firstly, we have changed the URL to a new, easier to access format. User are now able to go to http://m.newsgator.com and enter credentials to access their feeds. This replaces the PIN-based model, and allows for easier typing on a Mobile device.

Second, we have developed a version of the mobile reader specifically for the iPhone. This version is optimized for the iPhone touch-screen and the resolution. The URL above will automatically detect that it is being accessed from an iPhone (as will the regular NewsGator reader) and redirect to the iPhone-specific version.

Finally, we have made the NewsGator Mobile HTML reader availabel to all users. Free users, as well as Premium, will have full access to m.newsgator.com

ability to change font size when using iphone/ipod touch?

I really like the mobile version of newsgator when accessing from my iPod touch. It works well, and the UI is very clean and intuitive.

Couple of comments:

- would be nice to be able to reduce the font size in portrait mode to fit more feed items on the screen. currently, I can see 2 feed items and would like to be able to see 3-4

- would like for at least the user name to be remembered

Mobile Reader Opens Link In New Window

I really like the mobile reader on the iphone. Yesterday I noticed that when I select a link it opens a new window rather than opening the link in the same window as the reader. While this lets you have multiple links open at the same time, it also means it takes at least three gestures to close the new window and get back to the reader. Is there any way to select the old behavior?
