I see that NewsGator is reducing its product portfolio and transitioning some customers to Google Reader.

The [url=http://www.newsgator.com/productinfo/consumerinfo.aspx?mtcCampaign=-1&mtcEmail=17250392]FAQ on this transition[/url] doesn't mention NewsGator Mobile--only NewsGator Online.

Are these the same thing? It's unclear.

3 Feature requests for m.newsgator.com

While I primarily use Windows Mobile and Full web versions of Newsgator I do find the mobile web version very useful, both on the go and also behind corporate firewalls where the main web interface doesn't always work well, so here are some feature requests:

[b]1) Please add display of 20 posts at a time when viewing an individual feed items[/b]
On my mobile device with many of my feeds having embedded images my Windows Mobile device can actually consume or even exhaust my device's memory capacity when displayed in Pocket IE.

[b]2) Add Clipping ability to mobile web version[/b]
Obviously frequently asked for, happy to have just a link call 'Add to clippings' then it displays 2nd page with links of my clipping folders. Just click the right link and job done. Ideally would return to same original feed and item location and change text to say it's clipped, but if not, then just OK and manually clip 'back' twice on device would still be useful and appreciated

[b]3) Ability to toggle individual post's read status[/b]
Currently even worse when results are not paginated so via mobile I might get 200 posts, and can only mark All or None read via mobile interface!
Would be great if you could toggle read status of posts 1 by 1.
If you do bring in 20 item pagination could you add 'Mark all read on this page' as per main web interface?

NewsGator Mobile doesn't show any items

I've been using NewsGator mobile on my iPhone forever. I prefer it to the NetNewsWire app as I think it is much faster to load and requires less clicks to view the feeds. Anyways.

I just got my new iPhone 3G S and I added a bookmark to NewsGator mobile right away. It worked fine for a bit but since yesterday, it shows no feed at all on the mobile site. If I go to the web based NewsGator version (from my PC), I can see all my unread items. I tried rebooting the phone, logging out and in again but it still won't show any feed.

When I try NetNewsWire, it does work well.

Has anyone experienced this? Any solution?

Caching behavior with m.newsgator.com

I was using the Live HTTP Headers FF extension to see what gets sent back to the browser when using m.newsgator.com to see if the stale pages I was seeing on the Palm Pre were a browser problem.

Right now, the only cache/expiration-related header that the server's returning is "Cache-Control: private". This is appropriate, since this URL is specific to the user. However, this isn't sufficient to tell the browser that it needs to reload the page from the server whenever it's newly requested.

This really should also have either the no-cache or must-revalidate Cache-control action. That will tell the browser that it should check back with the NG server before displaying the page. Sending an Expires header with the page with a date that matches the page generation date would also do this. Right now, there's nothing that lets the Pre's browser know that it shouldn't just serve the stale page from the cache again.

iPhone web interface is broken with pagination

I will have 37 items for instance in a feed.

Normally I will use "Page Read" and it will mark the first 20 read, then show me the next 17. However, now it will jump me back to the main page (like it is out of items) and show me the unread count (17) but when I click on it, the feed shows up empty, and if I refresh the feed listing page, it doesn't show up anymore.

I don't know if this is a change in the web UI that caused a bug, or if it's the new iPhone OS 3.0 (I have a 3GS, so I got 3.0 preloaded too) - perhaps the newer Safari and the web UI have a minor incompatibility?

It should be easily reproducable. Just get a feed with > 20 items, mark only the specific page as read, and it should make the entire feed read (technically, but it won't appear to have until you refresh the page and it's gone)

I still prefer the web UI over the iPhone app. It's so clean and easy. I just wish you could access your clippings from it! Thanks a ton for your great service.

Palm Pre support?

The web browser on the Palm Pre is based on Webkit and tends to be fairly compatible with iPhone-optimized pages. Any chance of updating m.newsgator.com so it serves the iPhone version to the new Palm Pre? The non-iPhone version lacks a lot of features.

Sorting Feeds

Maybe I missing something, but if sorting of feeds by date is not currently supported, I sure would like to see it added at some point. Especially if each feed could have it's own sort order. I'm using iPhone.

this mobile reader is a cool app
but the complete lack of control of sorting available both in the app
and in the newsgator account itself is driving me completely bonkers.
I have a well-established, tried & tested order for reading my feed urls....

newsgator account?
mobile HTML reader?

they don't care - they just alphanum sort the feed urls
and provide absolutely no way to alter it.... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
If I had wanted something with no control, I wouldn't be using
an RSS reader..... :(

Mark topic for further processing

Hi,

I love m.newsgator.com. Also have a suggestion which would make it more efficient to use for me.

At m.newsgator.com I'd like to check the feed. If a topic seems useful then I'll read on of couse. But sometimes there's a link to a full blown webpage or a movie which I don't want to open on my mobile. Or I'd like to do something with a topic, for instance forward it, print it or look up something else about it.

I'd still like to mark all feeds as read since that's what they are: read.

So my request is a way to flag a certain topic in a feed for further processing.

This may be implemented for instance by flagging a topic (if for instance FeedDemon supports that), it may also be by marking a topic as unread (not preferred since the feed will be in the unread view all the time). Also possible is a small button next to a topic to send it via e-mail to an address you'll have to setup somewhere. If e-mail is not possible maybe an extra "feed" can be created in which these topics remain ("Further processing feed"). If it's not possible to display a button next to a topic it might be an idea to have a button on top and bottom of a page which opens a page with all the topics in the feed to be 'checked off' after which they can be mailed/copied to the "Further processing feed".

Right now I have to keep the whole feed (not only one topic) as unread which I'll bump into the whole day until I'm at a desktop. Or copy the URL, start e-mail, create a message to myself, paste the URL, send which takes to much time/handling on a mobile device.

Feature Request:Read/Unread status options [iPhone]

First off, I love the new features of 1.0.7 of NetNewsWire. It's great.

However, the new version has a very annoying "feature" that removes all recently read messages from view when read. This can be very troubling if you read through a couple articles then read something that makes you want to go back and re-read a post you just read. It's gone, now and there's no way to get it back without logging in to the web site.

Could there be an option added to the Preferences that lets you choose your preferred method of handling read messages? On top of that, could a feature also be added that lets you see older posts that were read in previous sessions, similar to the way the web site behaves? A preference to limit the number of old posts to list (say anywhere from 50-200) would also be nice.

Newsgator for Treo

I have a Treo 750V and I installed the newsgator for Mobile (downloading the Windows mobile for smartphone).

Everything is fine ecept that I cannot open the list of my feeds. I can see the list generated by newsgator but I cannot reed the full article.

Is there something wrong?

I can confirm the error discussed below if language is set to German (iPhone 3G, SW version 2.0), all article dates show up as 1.1.1970:

New URL and iPhone Reader

Today we are happy to announce several leaps forward in the NewsGator Mobile HTML reader.

Firstly, we have changed the URL to a new, easier to access format. User are now able to go to http://m.newsgator.com and enter credentials to access their feeds. This replaces the PIN-based model, and allows for easier typing on a Mobile device.

Second, we have developed a version of the mobile reader specifically for the iPhone. This version is optimized for the iPhone touch-screen and the resolution. The URL above will automatically detect that it is being accessed from an iPhone (as will the regular NewsGator reader) and redirect to the iPhone-specific version.

Finally, we have made the NewsGator Mobile HTML reader availabel to all users. Free users, as well as Premium, will have full access to m.newsgator.com

Helvetica instead of Arial

Would it be possible to edit the stylesheet at http://m.newsgator.com/css/mobile.css to specify that browsers should use Helvetica before Arial? The iPhone interface feed titles and buttons are in Helvetica, but the post content is displayed in Arial.

Marking items as 'unread'

Hi guys,

Hoping you can help. I've noticed that it's only the 'unread' items that get displayed on my PDA after synchronization. Is there any way I can mark feeds as 'unread' so as I can get the content on to my PDA for offline reading? I can change the status individually to 'unread' using FeedDemon (a bit long winded), but once it syncs with the website it reverts back to the original read/unread state. All I want is to be able to read my feeds offline, 'read' or otherwise. Any way I can do this?

Any help will be much appreciated, cheers.

Blank page after logging in on iPhone

I was going to post something to inquire if an iPhone-native app might be coming out in July, and was pleased to read about the native Web-based client. I logged in and get to a page called Feeds which for a split second displays a Newsgator header, then nothing. I'm left with a blank page marked Feeds. I've tried relogging in , and still get the same thing. No error messages or login problems are noted, just the blank page. I'm using iPhone software 1.1.4 (the latest). Any suggestions?

I upgraded to 1.1.4 yesterday and since then safari keeps asking me to sign in when I have already logged in. Tried clearing cookies, set to accept cookies always, nothing works. any idea how i can fix this?

New Google Reader iPhone app

I just loaded my feeds in Google Reader to try their new iPhone reader, and I like it better than their previous version, but I still like Newsgator's iPhone reader a lot better. After marking a feed read in Google's, you have to hit Back to get to the next feed in that folder. If you have only one updated feed in a folder and mark it read, you have to hit Back twice to get back to start page so you can go to the next folder. Maybe I was using it incorrectly, but that's way more taps than I do in Newsgator.

Hi guys,

I use the mobile newsgator version in browsers because the PC is slightly slow, and I much prefer being able to read an entire folder in one plain page than the Javascripty regular Newsgator.

However, I can now only log in with Safari and IE 7 -- if I try to log in with Firefox, I get an "Invalid username or password" error, even when the details are correct. Any ideas?

Ever since I got my iPhone and started looking a bit deeper into all the available apps for it, I was struck by one thing that was very, very obviously missing: a solid feed-reader. Reading feeds on the iPhone is one of *the best* uses of the device IMHO, and seeing as how I am a FeedDemon addict as well as a "big fan" of Newsgator's beta web-based reader, it was only natural to wait and expect the fine folks at Newsgator to cook up an iPhone specific version of the web-based reader. Just a few days after this idea got into my head, I read multiple blog posts about my wish having been granted: Newsgator released an iPhone-specific feed reader! I was overjoyed at the news, raved about it for days, and tried to infect friends with my enthusiasm about the news. The fact that I can now read feeds in FeedDemon at home, in the web-based reader at work (like right now!) and now ALSO wherever the *** I happen to be using the iPhone and that all of them always stay perfectly in sync with each other is the reason man came up with the word "fantastic".

It's been a solid week since the news broke and I set the iPhone reader up on my phone, and can you believe that I am just as excited still as I was the day the iPhone reader landed?

I can't even explain why I'm so excited. I suppose it's because Newsgator's iPhone reader reminded me very clearly about just why I got an iPhone in the first place :D

This thread has one purpose, and one purpose only: to send a BIG THANK YOU to the geniuses at Newsgator!

All I need is the ability to read My Clippings!

Firstly thanks so much for all the NetNewsWire/iPhone integration! :D

I've been struggling with Google Reader on my Macs & iPhone for quite a while. I've only been using it just to be able to keep everything synced, without realising you had the whole solution tied up for NetNewsWire & the iPhone.

Here are some things I find myself wanting/needing on the iPhone reader:

[b]All Feeds View:[/b]
All feeds shown continuously so we don't have to keep moving in & out of different folders.

[b]Mark as Read & Go to Next Article:[/b]
I find myself almost always marking an item as read & wanting to move on to the next article. I guess the actual title or button in the reader should be something like 'Read/Next', 'Read ->Next' or something short like that, & placed below each article.

[b]Clip & Mark as Read link:[/b]
I also tend to clip a lot of articles I like the look of but want to read later when I'm back on a Mac (with a larger screen than the iPhone). If it looked too cramped up at the top along with Read, Clip & Email it could be below each clip?

[b]View Clips:[/b]
The ability to view previously clipped clips.

[b]New Folder Icons:[/b]
Use iPhone or Leopard folder icons rather than the dated old style Mac folders.

[b]Change the Blue Link Colour:[/b]
The 'Google or Web1.0' blue link colour hurts my eyes (It's even used in iPhone Mail emails :pinch: ). How about something easier on the eyes like the colour of dates for iPhone Mail emails?

Mobile site very useful on ASUS Eee and OLPC XO

Just a note -- with the NewsGator Online main site going through a Javascript-heavy upgrade, I've been finding m.newsgator.com more and more useful. I've been regularly using it on both my ASUS Eee and OLCP XO mini-laptops, and it works very well and is generally much faster than the main site. Using it with Opera running on the Eee is great, as I can quickly move through links using Shift+Arrow.

I'm still looking forward to the update that will show feed names when viewing a folder... I'm also very interested in a fix that will let you view all feeds at once, regardless of folders. In NGO, you can do it by clicking on "My Feeds", but there's no way to do that in the mobile reader.

clippings on iPhone

This seems like the most obvious feature- I know it's been said that you guys are working on it, but does the whole backend need to be rebuilt or something?
The workaround method posted elsewhere on this forum is pretty useless as my clippings feed only picks up what I have clipped HOURS later.
Please excuse the tone of this post- but it's been months, and it seems like all it would take is a looksee at the google reader model to see what would be considered essential, featurewise.
Thank you for your otherwise great product- which I recommend daily.

Email doesn't work for all feeds

On the iPhone, when I select Email, a new blank email message pops up starting with the 'Message from NewsGator subscriber' and 'Post from NewsGator.com iPhone:'.

For some feeds (High-Def Digest for example - http://feeds.feedburner.com/highdefdigestallnews), the articles the correctly appears below the link - everything is good. However, other feeds (SciFi Wire for example - http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/rss/index.xml), neither the articles nor a link is in the email. Why?

I use m.newsgator.com almost every day on my Motorola Q smartphone running Windows Mobile 6 on the Verizon network. It's such a nice convenience! However, right now when I view the unread articles for a feed, they all appear on one page. Sometimes there's a hundred or so! There's no way I can read all those at once, so I can't mark any as read.

Please restrict the number of articles per page to 20 or so.

Even better would be to add a preference in my newsgator.com account, where I could set the number of articles per page. This would be under Settings -> Edit Locations -> NewsGator Mobile Edition -> Configure link. Right now that link only gives me one preference, "Only display excerpts."

Feature Request:iPhone Reader sort ordering

Hello there, I just started using the iPhone Reader this week and [b]really[/b] love it! There are a couple of thigs that I thought would be really useful as options that could be set in the Accounts page online.

1. Allow me to set the sort ordering for items as in the web version
2. Allow me to set the links as 'open new tab' or 'replace in tab' on global scale
3. Also allow the default full text of the post version as in the web interface
4. Perhaps button somewhere (at top of first window) to see and change options for iPhone?

These would, for me, make it completely and totally awesome!

Why is there a new page initiated for every folder or article that I click on?

Previously I used to get a brief description and option to collapse or expand within the same page. Now, I am taken to a new page and when I click on Page Read, another new page is created. Is there a setting to stop this - its driving me batty!

View across all feeds?

For several days now I have not been able to login from my iPod touch. I have also tried to login to mnewsgator.com from my desktop and cannot do so.

Is anybody else having problems ?

I never get a response not matter if I type my correct account and password or just a made up account.

clippings not showing up.

I'm coming over from google reader and all is well, except...
It seems when I clip an item- it takes far too for it to show up in my "my clippings" folder.
Even if I clip an item from my iPhone- then go check newsgator via the web- it doesn't display the items I just clipped for a few hours. With Google reader's "stars" - the moment you star an item, it's reflected instantly on both mobile and web versions.
I hope I'm just missing something- because other than that, the service is great.

given that the ipod touch doesn't do email, should the 'email' link in the feed item list be removed since the link doesn't work?

this is assuming that the iphone and the ipod touch can be identified uniquely when accessing the site
