NNW 2.0 Almost Unusable on my iPod touch

The performance of the feed list is so slow, there's almost no point in using the app. As I scroll, the list updates very slowly. It seems that in particular the one-line article summaries and the display of the favicons is glacial, and this seems to affect the display of the unread counts, which of course is critical. The unread counts are often not displayed, and when they are, they are almost always wrong: either there is no unread badge for a feed when, in fact, there are unread articles; or vice versa. Sometimes if I wait about ten seconds, the display refreshes; but it's not always accurate. Sometimes a slight scroll up or down will trigger a refresh, but again, it's unreliable.

Very disappointing, considering that if it worked it would be brilliant.

This has been bugging me for a long time with NNW for the iPhone. Why can't we mark a post as unread? Google Reader supports this, as does pretty much every other newsreader. Thanks.

You might ask: "Why move the forum?"

While we would have been happy to host this forum forever, I *personally* don't like web-based forums. I've been using this system for four years and have never been really adapted to it, and so my own participation is nowhere near what I'd like.

But I do *great* with email.

So the cool thing about Google Groups is that you can choose: use the web, use email, or both.

Incorrectly sycing dates...

Realizing that some dates syncing in the NNW iPhone app are incorrect. A date showing as August shows as current in Google Reader. But the app does correctly recognize it as unread. The incorrect dates go all the way back to 2006. I took some iPhone screenshots as documentation if that would help.

Repeated crash on launch

After using NetNewsWire for iPhone for several days, it will get into a state where it will crash on launch. I have not been able to remedy it on the phone, but rather must uninstall it and reinstall it, and re-associate it with my Google Reader account, after which it will work again for another several days. The crash traces look identical, and I've attached one.

Known issue? Workarounds? Imminent fixes?

Netnewswire on iPhone - Syncing Problem?

I'm not sure if I just misunderstand how the iPhone app works or if it's just not working:) I would expect the iphone App to sync with Newsgator, and Netnewsire to also sync with Newsgator, and it seems they do individually, however, the iPhone app and Netnewswire is not matching, the iPhone app being the oddball. Right now it says I have 66 unread. Netnewswire says 6, which is correct. Is something going wrong here?

No images when in offline mode

Hi All, I have a Ipod 3G Touch with firmware 3.1.2. After syncing and switching wifi off i find that i don't have any images.If i have wifi on i get the images.Does anybody know how to fix this or is it a bug in the program.Thank's all.

NNW v2 - Feedback on the new version

Now that NNW is available on the App Store and I've had a chance to play with it for a couple of days, here's my initial feedback. Many thanks for all of the hard work you've put into the Mac and iPhone apps!

Here are the things I love about the new version...

+ Great speed and performance improvements when reading and syncing

+ Landscape support in both feed detail and article views!

+ In-app email support

+ Google Reader syncing support (of course!)

+ Instapaper support

+ Twitter support (I love the way the screen flips over to reveal the Twitter entry form)

+ Fantastic new icon

Here are things that I feel need to be improved in the new version or modified to include user preferences to enable/disable the new behaviour:

- Read articles continue to appear in the 'Main Screen' and 'News Items List' views even after they have been read. There's no option to change how long articles appear in these views as there was in NNW v1. For me this is a deal breaker. I really don't like to see articles in the feed views unless they are unread. Please reinstate the option to change how long read articles appear in the views and/or please include an option to stop displaying articles as soon as they have been read.

- There's no unread counter / icon badge as there was in NNW v1. Please reinstate this functionality.

- The website icons for some of my Feeds are wrong or seem to duplicate the icons from the Feed above or below.

- There's no graphical divider between feeds in the 'Main Screen' view. Please re-instate the divider line as per NNW v1 so that it is easier to differentiate between specific Feeds.

- I would like the option to switch off the "Latest News" section that appears at the top of the 'Main Screen' view as I don't use it and it just utilises valuable screen space that could be used for actual Feeds. Alternatively maybe 'Latest News' can be moved to an entirely different view, perhaps accessible from a tab at the top or bottom of user interface (like the iTunes and AppStore apps).

- I think you should add a user preference to switch off / hide the "Starred" section that appears at the top of the 'Main Screen' view. I'm sure some users don't use it and it just utilises valuable screen space that could be used for actual Feeds. I'd quite like to see the 'Starred Items' section switched to an entirely different view, perhaps accessible from a tab at the top or bottom of user interface (like the iTunes and AppStore apps).

- Starred Items appear in the 'News Item List' view. I can appreciate how some people might like this but to me they are 'starred' not 'unread' items and therefore shouldn't appear in this view. If I want to read a starred item, I'll go to the starred items section. Please add a user preference to enable/disable this functionality.

- 'Starring' an item doesn't provide any obvious UI feedback that the item has been successfully starred. It would be good if the star changed colour to indicate that it is now 'starred'.

- The 'Show/Hide Feeds' option to hide specific feeds on the iPhone NNW app is great but i think it should be listed as an option in the Settings app or accessible via a 'settings' button on the bottom of the 'Main Screen' bar (maybe next to the 'refresh / sync' button) instead of as an entry in the actual view list. I don't see why it's included in the view as it is a preference/setting not an actual Feed or Section?

- In the 'News Items List' view, the read articles (which appear in bold black text) seem more like they are unread articles to me! Whereas the unread articles (which appear in Bold light blue text) seem like they should be read articles. What I'm trying to say is that you should reverse the colour scheme so that unread articles appear in Bold Black and read articles appear in Bold Light Blue.... or even not bold at all for read articles.

- I don't think that the 'Main Screen' view should include the title of the newest article (along with the article date and time) underneath the Feed name. The title text is always cut-off and just looks messy. It doesn't provide any valuable information as there isn't enough room to provide the full text of the title and instead it just makes the Main Screen view look untidy and more difficult to navigate. I guess some people might like this addition but if it can't be changed then please make it a preference that can be enabled/disabled on a per user basis. For me the layout of the 'Main Screen' view in v1 of the iPhone NNW app was perfect.

- I don't understand the need to list the Feed Name underneath each individual article title in the 'News Items List' view. It's redundant information because the Feed Name is already provided at the top of the view and is the same for each article in the list (each of my Feeds is a separate entry in the MainScreen view, I do not categorise my feeds in Folders, I guess this maybe different for people that use folders?). Providing the Feed Name only seems relevant to the 'river of news' style 'Latest News' view. I can understand why it would be useful in that view but I think that it is redundant in the standard 'News Items List' view. I also question whether the date should be listed underneath each article, since the view itself is already categorised by date. I can understand listing the time but I don't think that the date needs to be repeated.

So those are my thoughts after a few days of use! I really hope that you find this feedback useful.... I love the speed and performance of the new version and I would
love to switch back to using NNW as my regular RSS reader app. But, for me at least, there a couple of issues that are currently deal breakers (as outlined above). So I will be using the 'Feeds' iPhone app until some new features/user preferences are added to NNW.

I really hope you will be able to address some of the above suggestions/feature requests in future versions of the iPhone app.

A few newbie questions

Does NNW automatically delete read feeds? How do I stop this from happening?

For example, I starred a bunch of articles to read later. When I opened up the app again, it performed a sync and I lost all my starred stuff.

Can I set NNW to only delete stuff older than a certain number of days?

NNW 2 Premium is not in Latvian App Store :(

Why did you decide not to publish it on Latvian App Store? I waited and waited and waited… Finally had to change my account to UK just to be able to buy it.

P.S. Free version is absolute junk - I just can't stand 10 seconds looking at those large ads at the top of every feed. That's almost 20% of the screen real estate just for ads! If there was an ad in the main screen it would be acceptable, but in every feed - sorry, I'm going somewhere else… So I got RssRunner. Not bad app, but NNW v.1 used to be much better. Hopefully now I'll be able to use NNW 2 again, without ads.

Poor Brent Simmons the developer of Netnewswire Mac and iPhone.

I think behind the scenes at Newsgator they have got him working on Netnewswire Mac 3.2, Netnewswire iPhone 2.0, Netnewswire Mac 4.0 and the taplynx framework which Netnewswire iPhone 2.0 is based on. Oh and you can probably throw in the all things digital and variety iPhone apps as well as any other 3rd party iPhone apps Newsgator have done.

Not only that he has had to rush these releases to coincide with the switch to Google Reader syncing. I think this is way to much for one developer and has just resulted in disappointment.

The Taplynx framework was supposed to be released in June and there has been no word on it since July 14th.

The iPhone app is a mess with many features missing or not working. And a very unhappy user base.

The Mac app still doesn't support all the features of Google Reader such as marking items with a star.

So before complaining about the apps think of what is happening behind the scenes with the developer. I bet this is not what he signed up for when he sold Netnewswire to Newsgator and joined them as an employee.

NNW 2.0 crashes on launch, can't even use it anymore

After updating to the new NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhone, I was able to use it for about a day. Then it began crashing whenever I tried to launch the app. Now NNW just hangs there for a few seconds with an empty toolbar and empty content area, then returns to the home screen. Very disappointing.

Persistence

I only have a few feeds but have noticed that with two of them, after I read an article or mark as read, the read articles continue to be available in the iPhone app. For two other feeds, the articles disappear and the feed itself disappears from the list of feeds in the iPhone app as soon as I mark all articles read. However, they continue to be visible in NetNewsWire 3.2b28 desktop app, which is the behavior I prefer.

I found that in NetNewsWire 3.2b28 for Mac I can Control-click on the feed and set preferences for persistence, but no matter what I select it has no effect on the feed in the iPhone app, although it does seem to affect the display of feeds on the desktop app. I can't find any setting for persistence on the iPhone app. There doesn't seem to be a setting in Google Reader either.

Is this a bug or am I missing some setting somewhere? I would like it if all articles would remain for a while (at least a few days) before disappearing.

Even the previous free version allowed some preferences for setting the persistence of feeds, albeit only on a global basis, ie for all feeds together. Now with the paid version out, I have hopes that the developer adds a preference for setting persistence parameter for individual feeds. For instance I try to keep track of publication via a PubMed feed but sometimes I won't have the time, so I have a backlog of items to screens. Currently I can't do this because the new iPhone version has no way to allow me to set the persistence of that particular feed for instance at 1 year...

Request: Image caching support (and also font size)

I love the simplicity, speed and typography of NNW.

There's just one reason I don't use it anymore: Image caching. Both Byline and Newsstand cache images.

This is nice if you wish to cache everything at home before going out, but even more important is the fact that when you are reading one article, the whole content of other articles are loading in the background. This is not a small speed improvement. It makes a *huge* difference in how fast you can read articles. In both Byline and Newsstand, when you move to the next article, the images appear instantly. In NNW you have to wait at every single article. Possibly quite a long time if your connection isn't good.

I'd like to keep using NNW, but it is just too slow to be usable. I really hope you can fix this! (The desktop NNW has the same problem BTW.)

Also, while I'm at it, the typography and layout is the most beautiful of all the readers, but the text is too small... An option to change the font size would be very nice :-)

Mark as Unread, viewing unread items, showing feeds with only unread items

- Mark an feed entry that I have opened as unread

- Viewing unread items (the same way as the dropdown on FeedDemon to choose what items to show)

- Showing feeds that at the moment are hidden because they only have unread items

If there isn't a way with the latest version of NNW, can these be added to feature requests please?

[bug report] NNW 2.0 on iPhone crashes on startup

I managed to get the app into a state where it crashed on startup every time.
Steps: Navigate to a post. That post failed to load. I got impatient and exited the app with the Home button.

The only way to get out of this state was to reinstall the app.
Console and crash logs attached.

Google sync: restrict feeds on mobile

One appreciated feature on NGO was defining a limited list of feeds on the mobile location. It seems not possible with Google.

I follow about 800 feeds on my desktop and really don't want all of them on my mobile.
It would be great to have in preferences an option to select which feeds/folder to sync.

NetNewsWire has become completely unuseable for me. It crashes on start up and rebooting does not solve the problem. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app, fixes it but only for a couple of hours.

Considering how I paid for the premium I was wondering if there was an ETA on the first update? I hate to ditch NetNewWire because it was such a great solution for me, however this is not working as it should be.

Show only unread items! And counter of unread items on the icon...

2.0 premium syncs, shows message counts, but blank article list

As a long time NNW user on iPhone and mac, I'm somewhat bummed that 2.0 is nearly completely nonfunctional for me.

I get (slow and painful, but eventually functional) syncing, and article counts in the feed view update, but when I open a feed I almost always get a blank page. Sometimes I get articles (maybe 1/10 times), but there's no pattern to why that I can discern.

By all the people whining for features I gather it works for some people. What can I do to help figure out why it's not working for me...?

I seem to be in the minority for some reason, but I wanted to voice my appreciation for the new 2.0 release of NNW on the iPhone. I know there are some bugs to be ironed out and some features to be added, but overall I much prefer the new release to the previous 1.0 line. I like the layout and collapsible lists. And most importantly, Google Reader sync is a huge win, and "Send to Instapaper" is fantastic.

Bugs and Missing Features in 2.0

Hi,

I purchased the Premium version without thinking much of it because of how great my overall experience was with 1.x. However, I must echo others' sentiments that 2.0 comes with many problems, and not only that, but it is missing a very essential feature from 1.x (in my mind), which is the ability to save read items on your iPhone for up to two weeks. It's simply too frustrating to no longer have that feature.

Additionally, here are some bugs I have experienced:

* Crashing as reported by others
* Marking all as read doesn't affect the unread number for that feed
* Erratic syncing behavior, where it seems to cycle through the same steps

For now, I'm switching to Byline because it seems to be a very solid and mature app. I hope that NNW will eventually surpass it, I'll keep trying the new versions as they come out, and I definitely am happy with the desktop version, so I'll continue to use that.

Bug: Unread Article Count Stays at 312 for v2

V2 Is A Complete Joke

Having used V2 today I can only comment that this software is a complete joke.

Did the developers actually ever run it and it is quite clear that Apple don't test software before approving it.

As others have mentioned, why show read messages or not give the option to turn them off.

Maybe Apple should recategerize this software as a game since I have wasted loads of time playing "hunt the unread message" or "has it finished updating yet".

I so wanted this software to be good after V1 and was ready to buy the premium version but I can barely stand the free version.

Shoddy piece of work.

Here are the changes in 1.0.7 (since 1.0):

- Fixed several crashing bugs.

- Performance is much improved.

- Memory use is much improved, and some memory leaks have been fixed.

- You can unsubscribe from feeds or just remove them from the iPhone. Click the Edit button to start. Click the circle button, then the Delete button. An action sheet will pop up asking you what you want to do. (Don't Show in iPhone or Unsubscribe Everywhere. Or Cancel.)

- It now shows unread items only, and lists only feeds with unread items.

- You can now send a link via email -- click the action menu and choose Email Link.

- The application icon on the home screen now gets the unread count badge.

- Total unread count appears at bottom-left of Feeds page (except during refresh/sync).

- When downloading feeds, the status message says the name of the feed.

- When you open a web page inline, it opens in a new view (it slides over, etc.) You can then go back to the news item view.

I have a lot of feeds, which may be why I'm not entirely crazy about 2.0. I liked being able to have only certain feeds set to sync to the phone (and, even better, adjusting those settings on the web site at any point...).

Now, the Show/Hide feeds option in 2.0 doesn't seem to work. I've been through the list multiple times unchecking feeds, but as soon as I go back to the main screen, it forgets everything I did on the list. Do I have to wait until it's finished checking all the feeds to do this? And, on a side note to this, I haven't seen it [i]stop[/i] checking feeds ever. I've let it sit for 10+ minutes, and I find it still checking feeds (sometimes the same feed multiple times).

I've got a lot of other problems with 2.0 (taking [i]minutes[/i] to load a feed after I tap it, not syncing the read/unread posts reliably, etc.), but I'm hoping if I can hide a bunch of the feeds, that'll help some of these problems (by reducing the memory/processor usage & making it more responsive overall, hopefully).

navigation bar and viewing pane lose sync with each other

When navigating down into posts, when I hit the back arrow the app frequently advances the top menu bar but doesn't change what appears on the middle screen. For instance, if from the main screen I'd gone into a folder, then clicked on a post to read, sometimes when I hit the upper left arrow the top menu bar will go up a level in terms of navigation but the post I was reading still appears on the screen. It's as if the menu bar and the viewing pane lose sync with each other. This also would happen in the old version. If I exit the app and come back it fixes itself. This happens at least once a day. At first I thought it only happened when I pushed buttons too fast but it seems to do it when I take my time, too.

Let me know if this needs more explanation.

Is there a way to see a list of unread items?

I like NNW 2.0 Premium. My feeds download quickly. I am looking for a way to see a list of all my unread feeds. If I see a heading that interests me I delve deeper otherwise I mark as read. I can't find a way to do this. Have I missed it?

Ghost feed shows only on iPhone, not on Google Reader and not on my Mac

I have a ghost feed, it's an RSS feed of my Flickr stream, that pops up on NetNewsWire for iPhone whenever I add photos to Flickr. The weird thing is it shows up without any name ("Unkown") and it doesn't show up on my Mac nor is it listed anywhere on my Google Reader account.

Anyone else have any ghost feed, I'd love to try and delete it some way. Or find out where it's coming from.

NNW Premium is not available in the Hong Kong store

I am very frustrated that the NetNewsWire Premium iPhone app at the discounted initial price of US$1.99 is not available in the Hong Kong app store.

I do not have access to the U.S. store. I noticed that there are a few others with similar issues from Singapore and other locations.

Hopefully when the app arrives in the Hong Kong store, we will also have the opportunity to purchase it at a discounted price. If it is only available outside the U.S. at full price I will probably just stay with the advertisement-supported lite version - not because of cost, but because of a feeling of being taken advantage of and treated shabbily. I already feel some of this.

Can anyone confirm whether I should keep looking in the HK store or not? Thank you for your assistance.

NNW 2 iPhone crashing when downloading feeds

When I start up NNW iPhone since installing the 2.0 update, both the free and paid versions crash while downloading feeds.

Furthermore, NNW is then stuck on this item so when it relaunches, it crashes immediately. The only remedy seems to be to reinstall the app and stay away from the offending article.

Not sure if the item is malformed but NNW should be able to handle it more gracefully the falling over like that.

NNW iPhone 2.0 - My feedback

I've been a long time NetNewsWire user on both the Mac and on my iPhone. I wanted to provide some feedback on the new app, which after a long wait feels like a bit of a let down.

I don't mind much the arrival of advertisements in the free app. However I don't know if removing the ads in the premium app is enough for me to pay for it. I would like to see some extra features, and at that point I would pay even more than the current price.

- The biggest feature that is no dead, that I'd like to return is that of clippings. Clippings is something I've grown completely dependent on. Before the switch to Google Reader, I would look at a feed on the iPhone and decide I wanted to read it later on my iMac. I would make a clipping and then when I got home there it was waiting for me. Fantastic feature that I can live without. I even went one step farther a made a bunch of clipping folders to store articles based on criteria for a rainy day. For me the return of clippings would be fantastic.

- My biggest complaint with the new app is that it takes to many clicks to get anywhere. My feeds are organized in folders. So let's say the News folder is showing on my iPhone, the arrow is down and beneath it there is a new item from CNN. If I click on it I then go to a fee page for CNN and not directly to the new item. This is a bit counterproductive. It would be nice if clicking on the title lead directly to the article and clicking elsewhere lead to the feed page.

- Mark as unread ... why is this not there? It's omission in the first version lead to my dependence on clippings. It's still been omitted and it's more useful that say the star button.

- It's really annoying that unread items end up scattered about with read items. Would be nice if a preference could fix this (Don't show read items).

- Options to hide "* Starred Items" and "Latest News (24 Hours)" from the main screen. I have my feed organized into folders and don't really have use for those to features. It would be nice if I could keep them from displaying or if the could be placed under my folder structure next to the "Show/Hide feeds".

That's my two cents, I'd really like to know if the clippings feature will somehow return. The app just become a lot less functional for me without it.

No authenticated feed on the iPhone

Insofar as I can see authenticated feeds do not work on the iPhone version, given that the are synced from Google Reader which does not support them. i tried importing them from the Mac Version, where they work. To no avail. Am I right?

Love the new version, just missing send to delicious to make it perfect. :)

Download images for offline viewing

Please add an option to also download images when syncing, so when I read offline they're there. I guess the option could be to only download them when syncing if you're on wifi.
