Feeds disappearing from the iPhone

I've been using NetNewsWire on the iPhone for about 10 days. Until yesterday everything seemed fine -- excellent, really! A fabulous, truly useful product. But yesterday, about half my feeds disappeared from the iPhone, even though they are still visible and working when viewed through FeedDemon on my WinXP desktop. I deleted NetNewsWire from the iPhone and re-installed it this morning, which fixed the problem for about 10 minutes. For a short time, all feeds returned to the iPhone. Now half the feeds have disappeared again. For example, I have four RSS feeds from New Scientist magazine. Only one of them shows up on the iPhone now -- but a few days ago, all four were visible (and working) on the iPhone. All four are still visible (and working) when viewed through FeedDemon. Ideas, anyone?

I have dozens upon dozens of feeds in NNW for Mac, and I'm not really interested in checking all of them from my iPhone. Also, some tend to be little more than a large image (Daily Dilbert), while others are just headlines coupled with single line of often non-descriptive text. ("Visit web site for full article.")

With that in mind, NNW should have a "Exclude From Mobile Feeds" properties checkbox that allows you can mark a feed (or a group of feeds) and prevent them from syncing to the iPhone.

Or you could go the other way, and enable a master preference "Marked mobile feeds only", and then mark the two or three or whatever you want to see.

Either way, it's about separating the wheat from the chaff and making the best use of your mobile device and its limited space/size/bandwidth.

I'm very satisfied with NNW on the iPhone. However, I would like to see two improvements.

1) Turn-off standby mode as long as feeds are downloaded. I'm not sure if it keeps downloading when iPhone goes into stand-by, it would be cool if it could stay active until finished with downloading.

2) I use folders to sort feeds. Clicking on a folder lets me read all containing feeds until it fails. Sometimes it jumps to the next read item outside of the folder. If I then navigate back to get back to that folder I'm at the very top of all feeds I'm subscribed to (it's a long list I always have to scroll down…). So basically it would be great if navigating inside NNW would be more consistent. Don't know if that is problem of having too many feeds, around 200 on the iPhone.

NNW Crashing After Feeds Eliminated from iPhone

I was pleased to see I could cut the number of NNW feeds on my iPhone after synching with my Mac iBookG4. I removed about 30 from the iPhone. But upon returning to NNW on my Mac, NNW crashed and keeps crashing. It crashes at the same point – 190 of 340 feeds received – and I can't use it any longer. This means I don't have access for key feeds needed in my communication consulting business. I downloaded a new NNW, with the same result. How do I get NNW functioning again on my Mac? I' running, or trying to run, NNW 3.1.7.:ermm:

Doubts about NetNewsWire on iPhone

Hi Everybody,

first of all thank for this application, is very nice to use.

But i have some doubts about two things and hope that somebody can tell me what about that:

1) On NetNewsWire for Max, i have around 15 feeds sites, but on iPhone only appears 11 sites.
Why??. The applicaton for iPhone have a limit of sites or something like that?.

2) When i update my feeds on iPhone whit WiFi on my house.... then when i read them on another place whitout WiFi, will use the 3G or EDGE plan for watch this?. Or all updates i can watch them offline whitout connect to online again?.
(in another words, the program always need a conection for see the previously charged feeds?).

Unread Bubble Will Not Go Away

All of a sudden the NetNewsWire Icon on my home screen is showing a red bubble with the unread message count. I have 2 problems.

First, it is not always accurate. It seems to be stuck on zero.

Secondly, I don't want it there to begin with- It's ok if I had unread messages, but even when I no unread messages, it still shows the red "0." It used to not show the bubble when there we no unread? I went into setting and tried the "Unread Count">"Show Badge" to off. Not sure if that is the same thing or not, but it didn't work anyways.

I have an iPhone3G with version 2.1 and the latest NNW. It is jailbroken, but it has been working for a while until yesterday. I have tried powering off, uninstalling, reinstalling.

I tried searching and didn't find this problem, sorry if it is a repeat.

SSL login?

I would just like to know if the login phase of NNW on the iPhone is SSL protected. I think this is quite important to know, considering that a lot of people will use the app on open wi-fi hotspots...

Bug? Same feed reappearing after sync

Every time I open NNW on my iPhone and the feeds are updated, the same article (over a year old) appears as "new" and I have to manually mark it as read.

The same feed does NOT appear as new when I sync my copy of NNW on my Mac.

Any ideas why this keeps happening? Thanks.

feature request: improvements to internal web browser

I think the apps internal web browser lacks three things which "force me" to use "open in safari" option:
1) Landscape mode
2) Sending links to friends uses "Interesting link" as subject instead of page title as safari does
3) There is no progress indicator when loading a page. It is very important feature especially in poor network conditions (i.e. EDGE).

I have some mailing lists converted to RSS feeds, and the only sort order apparently available is newest-first, oldest-last. This is upside down for a mailing list.
Please could we have the ability to be able to switch it round on the iPhone?

Configuring this per-feed (or even just globally) on the website would be just fine.

News Item Lot after Returning from Safari

I have latest version on iPhone. Have "Keep read items" set to 2 hours. I click on an item. Then click on read in Safari. Safari opens the item. I then use iPhone Home Button. Click on NetNewsWire and the item is completely gone!!!!

Multiple copies of the same article

Some feeds I am subscribed to, often change their article title, or just one or two words in the summary, leading the application to cache every copy of one article, and making it appear several times under a slightly different title.
When this happens to a dozen of RSS feeds that I am subscribed to, I have several hundreds of unread or new articles that I already read actually.
Is it possible to deactivate caching of articles, or even deleting only cached articles that do not exist anymore on the feed ? The best would be to be able to set this up feed by feed.

Top-Level folder missing

I organize my feeds into two top level folders, "Grade A" and "Grade B". Both folders contain both feeds and sub-folders.

On the iPhone version of NNW, "Grade A" is displayed. But [b]all[/b] of the feeds, even those really contained in the "Grade B" folder, are shown as being contained by "Grade A". The "Grade B" folder does not display at all.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Hi,

I'm using my 'classic' iPhone to read RSS feeds while commuting and only have slow GPRS access. I usually sync NetNewsWire when I do have Wifi access and it would be great if I could configure NetNewWire to not only download the RSS feed itself, but also the URL in the element of the . Many of the RSS feeds I'm subscribed to only contain a short summary and force you to click-through to the original site to read the full article. When having Wifi access that's not really a problem, but when connecting through GPRS it is dead slow. If NetNewWire would also download the original articles upfront, reading them would go much faster when there is no Wifi access.

Can't get feeds on iPhone

Hello. I have used and love NetNewsWire Lite on the Mac since release. I have loaded the iPhone app onto my 3G iPhone (and the new s/w version) but cannot get anything on to the phone at all. I can see all the usual feeds on my Mac. I have set up on NewsGator a location for the iPhone. Am I missing something very basic? Any hep appreciated. Cheers. William

Issues syncing over 3G

I assume it's a connection error when attempting to sync the read/unread status, but it seems to happen 90% of the time.

When I connect via wireless everything is fine. Sync takes a couple of seconds and everything updates fine compared to NewsGator Online.

When I connect over 3G the status bar sits on "Syncing read/unread status..." for over a minute before retrieving new feeds. After this NNW has all the new feeds, but NNW and NGO are out of sync.

Once in a blue moon the process completes quickly and both are in sync so I know it does work over 3G, but not often at all.

Is there a way to add a fetch ability to download everything in advance?

view instead of having to 'click thru'...

Why the unread count doesn't match

As has been mentioned as a side note in various threads, for some people the unread count on the NNW badge (and in the app) is completely wrong. When my count dropped below 10 today, I figured it should be fairly easy to then work out where the app gets that incorrect number from. And it turns out, the cause was blindingly obvious :)

It's nested folders. Without a visible feed in the top level folder, any unread item in a subfolder is ignored when NNW generates the total unread count!

My subscriptions have 5 top level folders, but two of those have no feeds, just subfolders (and the subfolders contain most of my feeds). I subscribed to a new feed in one of the empty top levels, and the read count was fixed to include all of the subfolders. Marked the new feed as read, and the read count was still correct - until I set keep read items to "never" and then NNW ignored the subfolders again.

Whoops! ;)

to safari and back

has anyone noticed when you run google mobile, do a search, then open up a web result, it opens up safari with the back button enabled? the amazing thing is when you press the back button, safari closes and google mobile magically opens, bringing you straight back to where you were. in fact, if you had closed safari (by hitting the home button) without hitting the back button, then opened up safari directly from the home screen, the back button is still there, and it still opens google mobile. it looks like they were able to tap into safari's history somehow.

anyways, back to my point - i wonder if it'd be possible for NNW to tap into this "trick". we'd then be able to open up a clip in safari and come back without a sweat. :w00t:

REQ: "Previous Unread" button

Issue:
To navigate from one feed item to the next feed item, NNW/iPhone only provides a "Next Unread" button. In most cases, this means that the user must read the items within a feed in a "most recent" to "least recent" order. This is the opposite of the order which I, and presumably other users, would like to use when catching up with a feed.

Currently, if I want to read a feed's items in chronological order, I need to do the following:
1) Select feed.
2) Select the last item in the feed's list of items.
3) After reading the item, back up to the list of items.
4) Repeat steps 2-3.

This is not a smooth, unobtrusive reading flow.

Expected:
Allow users to read a feed's items in chronological order by providing a "Previous Unread" button.

Alternatively, provide some sort of setting that would allow a user to specify their desired reading order. The advantage here would be that no button would need to be added to the existing reading interface.

Example scenario:
1) Subscribe to a feed that tracks Project X's changelog. The feed might look like this, in descending chronological order:

Project X 1.0
Project X 1.0RC2
Project X 1.0RC1
Project X 1.0b2
Project X 1.0b1
Project X 1.0a1
Project X 0.9
Project X 0.8

2) If I want to catch up on the changes to Project X from versions 0.8 through 1.0, it makes the most sense to read the feed items in ascending chronological order:

Project X 0.8
Project X 0.9
Project X 1.0a1
...
Project X 1.0

This is not possible with NNW/iPhone without backing up to the items list after reading each item, as described above.

After reading feeds, feed name remains on screen even after refresh w/ no new articles

I am not sure if this is how NNW is supposed to work on a second generation iPod Touch. When I read my feeds, everything loads fine and only shows feeds with unread articles. However, after marking the new articles as read, the feed names remain on the screen. Are they supposed to stay there or should they disappear since there are no new articles?

Marking headline as read, without opening

It would be helpful if NetNewsWire for iPhone provided some way to quickly mark headlines as read without having to view each one individually.

I skim through the headlines collected by my feeds looking for ones that interest me. When I find an interesting one I view it, which marks it as read. Which is great. However, on NetNewsWire for iPhone I have no way to figure out which headlines I've already skimmed if I don't open each one individually to have it marked as read. When I open NetNewsWire a couple of hours after my first skimming I then have to skim through some of the same headlines.

On NetNewsWire for Mac this problem is alleviated because I can press the down arrow as I skim through headlines which loads the headline in the preview pane and marks it as read. On the iPhone, no such feature exists.

Newsgator online for iPhone provides a great solution to the problem by breaking headlines into pages. When you've skimmed through a whole page you can press "Mark all as read" for the page. I'd like to see similar functionality on the iPhone version.

Feature request: save to instapaper and/or run javascript

I've quickly become a big fan of the mac and now iPhone app instapaper. It let's you save (large) web pages to be read later (including offline on the iPhone). It works by adding the pages with a bookmarklet so I'd love to see either a specific "save to instapaper" option or more generically the ability to run a javascript from the mailto/save to clippings pop up.

Thanks for making both NNW for mac and now iPhone; I'm not any smarter but they are do make it easier for me to fake it ;)

Issue with Telegraph RSS feeds

I recently subscribed to some of the Telegraph RSS News Feeds using NetNewsWire on the iPhone and I am experiencing some issues that I hope someone may be able to help me with.

The feeds appear to download ok. When I view the feed I see a list of the individual articles. When I select a specific article I see a 'blank page' with neither a title or content. Also when I go back to the feed the item I tried to view is still showing as unread.

The strange thing is that the [url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/newsfeed/rss/connected.xml]Telegraph Connected (Digital Life) feed[/url] appears to work ok (I see individual titles & content)

but news feeds such as [url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/rss]All News[/url], [url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/rss]UK News[/url], [url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/rss]International News[/url] have the issue I described above as if the feed is malformed in some way.

I wrote to the Telegraph but they say that there's nothing wrong with their feeds. If that correct then it must be either a local issue or a bug in the NetNewsWire app but it seems strange that some Telegraph feeds work & others don't.

Can anyone test this for me & let me know the outcome?

BBC News Front Page World not working properly

Strange problem recently occurring on this one feed.

Update, and it shows x number of unread items. When you go to read them, they are all read, and they have not been updated since you last read them.

If you read them on the pc and so 'clear' them, then the following time, the feed updates correctly on the iphone. However, the next time you refresh, it's back to the unread items which have already been read.

Anybody else seeing this?

Since the rejection of Podcatcher to the app store, I've tried subscribing to podcasts in NetNewsWire. It works great. The only thing is that when you hit an entry, it marks it as read, and then that entry is only available for at most 3 days (in the settings, in will only keep read entries around for at most 3 days). It would be cool if there was some way to keep entries around selectively for longer. This would be especially useful for podcasts.

I love NNW, use it on my Mac, have enjoyed using it on iPhone, but lately have had the opportunity because every time I start it, it starts, shows a white screen for a time, the returns to the iPhone home screen.

Anyone have any ideas about how to fix it?

I went into preferences and set Netnewswire to "never" for keep read items. Then I exit and restart Netnewswire. Upon reading a story or stories, I go back and they remain on my list. Previously, they would disappear. Help...

Clippings folder not showing on my iPhone

My clippings folder is nowhere to be found on my iPhone. I can move items to the clippings folder from my iPhone, and they then show up on my Mac, but not my iPhone. But not even the folder itself shows on my iPhone. I've looked for settings and preferences that might need to be set, but can't find anything.

Any clues?

Feature Request: Ability to save images

I'm not sure if this can be implemented in the browser used by NNW on the iPhone, but I'd like to save images just like I can in Safari. Is this possible? Pressing and holding on an image only brings up a "action" pop-up. Cutting my dependence on Safari would be great.

Brent, I am an avid NNW desktop user( best Mac desktop software out there). Love it. The iPhone app it very good as well. I have a request, though. Apple has added those lovely "Restrictions" (Settings->General->Restrictions) that allow locking out Safari, YouTube, etc, that make many of us parents feel much better about our kids having an iPhone. However, in NNW for iPhone, you tap on the title of the feed article and you now have web access to that page even though the restrictions are in effect for Safari. You can click and surf on to other pages.

Please, please make NNW respect the restrictions and NOT allow opening a web page within NNW if Safari itself is blocked. Could NNW check the restrictions? Could you release an older version of NNW that is not able to open web pages "in house"?

There are, I expect, other parents out there that are uncomfortable with RSS-loving pre-teens and teens having full-browser mobile web access for various reasons.

Clippings no longer work, and no "mark as unread"

My clippings worked up to a week ago, and suddenly stopped. I see this was reported some over a month ago and no solution is yet offered. Without a way to mark unread, there's little point to reading on the iPhone if you can save stuff for later.

Nothing changed on the desktop or iPhone when clippings stopped working. That would seem to point to a problem on the server side.

Guess that's why one shouldn't rely on free services.

The iPhone app is pretty cool and you can save items to your clippings but it seems like a real oversight to never ever be able to get back to them on the iPhone. Could you add this as a feature request for an upcoming release please?

I updated the software on my iPhone two days ago, then problems came: I didn't see any buttion that I can change the settings, as how long I want keep the read news, when the read news could be deleted. So, now the read news always remain, the lists on each feed are too long, no new articles can come in. Each time I sync, it says I have a lot of new articles, but when I click in one feed, they are in gray, all read.

where is the setting button? Could somebody give me some directions? Thanks a lot. I liked this rss reader very much, but I can not use it now.
