That's a great point about the Iphone app. Google reader will be even more effective in the coming weeks as the windows 7 operating system comes out and includes the ip address functions.

Yeah, this is a known issue during the current transition from newsgator.com to Google Reader for all the web-based reading, and syncing. Apparently the iPhone app will be updated.

On the other hand, this means you can use any iPhone app that syncs with Google Reader (I'm using Byline, which seems very good), or use Google Reader's web interface, which I'm told is a much better experience than newsgator.com on iPhone...

Hey guys,
I went to the newsgator.com and I see that iPhone DOES sync, but to newsgator.com. Mac client also DOES sync, but to Google Reader.

They both DO sync, but quite independently, using different databases.

I deleted iPhone app, installed it again, but see the same behavior.

So, I think, one of the clients needs to be fixed. I never saw such a behavior before recent transition.

Can't speak for the times when I'm just on 3G, although I've not noticed my service provider (O2 in the UK) doing anything odd to my connection with any other apps. But I've definitely noticed the problem when syncing from my home network (just a Belkin N1 between me and the world, no proxying by my ISP.)

Hang on, I'll try again. I'm at home right now.

Just synced the iPhone, and I've got 84 unread articles. Firing up NetNewsWire on the Mac, I can see 93, which is fair enough. So, I'll read everything on the Mac. Right, done that, and quit, so it synced the read/unread status. If I check the web interface, it shows I have no unread articles.

So, out with the iPhone. I open NetNewsWire, sync... and I have 45 unread articles.

Okay, so that's quite odd. The unread count changed, but it's not in sync with the server. I just checked a few "unread" articles on the iPhone, and they definitely include articles I just read in NetNewsWire.

Maybe it's getting halfway through the unread/read sync and falling over for some reason?

Are you running behind a proxy server or anything like that? It could be intercepting some requests.

While I understand that there may be different unread counts between the different clients, the behaviour I'm seeing is that the iPhone client simply isn't noticing when the desktop NetNewsWire client marks items as read.

I generally get my unread count down to zero every day. My problems with seeing the same articles twice on the iPhone led me to this experiment:

1. I checked NetNewsWire on the Mac and on the iPhone, and their unread counts were similar, if not the same
2. I closed down NetNewsWire on the iPhone and on the Mac
3. I restarted NetNewsWire on the Mac
4. I read all the unread articles in NetNewsWire on my Mac
5. I closed NetNewsWire on the Mac
6. I checked with the website that the unread count is zero (i.e. NetNewsWire on the Mac successfully synced its unread count with the NewsGator server, I presume)
7. I fired up NetNewsWire on the iPhone
8. I watched it go through its "Syncing read/unread status..." stage in a suspiciously short amount of time (around a second)
9. All the articles that were unread in it before are still unread in it.

As I've noticed that I'm reading things twice quite a lot, my suspicion is that my iPhone client never notices when the unread count is changed on other clients.

Any ideas?

The main issue -- perhaps the only issue -- is that each reader (online, iPhone, Mac) keeps items for a different length of time, which results in different unread counts.

The plan is to fix this in the future, so that unread counts would match. However, you'd still be in a situation where they don't match if, for instance, you tell the Mac version to keep items after they've been fallen off the feed.

I followed the post above, and unchecked the feeds for the iphone location on Newsgator. I didn't remove the app on the iphone. Refreshed to remove all feeds there.

I deleted all folders and feeds from the Newsgator account. Then next, performed a [i]'Starting Over[/i]' in preferences from the mac client, with '[i]Replace subscriptions on Newsgato[/i]r'. The Feeds on Newsgator still do not reflect the mac client : they show a lower read status ([b]1950[/b] in Newsgator Total/[b]4848[/b] in Mac Client). Perhaps that's a clue.:hehe:
[u]More info[/u]: I have '[i]Save News Items as HTML files on Disk'[/i] checked in preferences; And, [i]'Keep news items For at least 7 days[/i]' checked. But as the issue is with 'Unread Status, I don't see how this affects things.

The iphone feeds were automatically reinstated with the start over. The iphone, when synced again, was now faithful to the 'Unread' status of Newsgator, in one test feed, but not total Unread count.;)

[u]One strange peculiarity too[/u]: [i]although this was a start over, the folders on Newsgator were added faithfully, one feed insists and remaining out of the folder I have on my client. Now, I had only moved that into a folder about one hour earlier, and so it is reflecting the position of before I did the 'start over again' routine!![/i]:w00t:

[u]One More Test[/u]:
A) [i]Sync Change of Status to Read[/i] On the Mac client: I marked all the posts (for BBC News) on one feed as read. Then synced again. The Newsgator reflected the change faithfully. Then I synced agin with the iphone, which also reflected this satus change for BBC News to 'All Read'.

B) [i]Total Unread status counts[/i] But I still have Unread for Mac Client + Newsgator + iphone as different: i.e. [b]4188: 1922: 822[/b] Th

C) [i]older Unread posts Mac/newsgator [/i]: I checked the earliest Unread Post in one feed on the Mac Client and compared it to the same feed on the iphone (378 compared to 75 Unread): [i]Result - 23rd May compared to 31st May.[/i][b] So, the Mac client is keeping older Unread posts, which aren't reflected on Newsgator/iphone.[/b].

D)[i] Earlier Unread posts iPhone/Newsgator :[/i] The iphone isn't showing feeds that have posts, for example 'Shmooed Food', Unread but latest post was in May 8th 2009. Again, [i]Soup can help you lose weight[/i] the last post dated May-27-2009 in the feed 'Latest entries from ashy-macbean.blog-city.com' is in my Mac client, and on the Newsgator.

E)[i]A time/sync discrepancy with Apple and Newsgator[/i]: For instance one feed shows posts on iphone as far back as May-20-2009 but not May 18th. Interestingly, the date for the May 20th post on the iphone is given as May 21st 2009 1:55:00 Am , which is at variance with the Newsgator item for the same post which is [i]Silver Fir(Abies alba) [/i] May-20-2009 6:55:00 PM (the feed is White Lotus Aromatics Blog: http://blog.whitelotusaromatics.com/feeds/posts/default). So there is a weird time problem here. The Mac client shows the same time and date as the iphone.

(F) [i]The peculiar feed outside its folder [/i]remains on Newsgator (and doesn't show in iphone at all in or out of folder). I manually placed it in the folder on Newsgator, then synced the iphone again: and i can't tell you anything, there are no unread posts in it!:D

All three, iphone, newsgator read status are out of sync. and mac are out of sync:
E.G. for on[i]e feed it is, 236/149/376, in the order of feed amalgamators in the line above[/i]:w00t:

I notice the Newsgator fails to update my folder structure since I altered them on the mac.

The iphone doesn't show all the feeds in each directory either.

I had this same problem. Everything was working fine, but over time NetNewsWire on my iPhone got slowly out of sync with the one on my Mac (and online). Here's what I did. First, I uninstalled NetNewsWire on my iPhone. Then I went on newsgator.com, hit Settings->Edit Locations->[iPhone location "Feeds"]->Uncheck all->Update. Then enter your Newsgator credentials on your iPhone, open NetNewsWire, and sync for the first time. Then go back to newsgator.com and re-check all feeds you want showing up on your iPhone and click Update. Finally, go back and do another sync on your iPhone.

I don't know if it will last, but my iPhone is now in sync with my Mac.

I have the same problem, Newsgator has 1482, NetNewswire 1892 and my iPhone 2g jailbreaked under wifi 799 unread. its really odd...

I'm reading feeds using the web edition (I'm on Ubuntu ;-) and also NetNewsWire on the iPhone.
Got up to date with all my feeds last night using Wifi at home.

Back in the office today and on the browser, and the feeds read / unread status has not been updated, apparently. Unless of course everyone in my list of feeds has decided to write many posts in one day! ;-)

Any ideas guys? Progress?

Happy to be Tester / helper / send bugs etc if it helps.

I want to add support for the view that this is a bug, not a feature. I have feeds with unread posts at the website, but they do not show up on the iPhone. I also changed the NNW settings on the iphone to make them more generous (shall we say), but it does not help.

I'm seeing these sync problems too, between an iPod Touch, Newsgator, and NNW Mac. I'd be happy to try and help work out a solid, reproducible, test case for this. If the worst comes to the worst, I also know which end of Wireshark is which...

I am having the same problem, with a few caveats.

I use Newsgator Online at home (Vista Home) and work and use NNW on my iPhone 3G. My Newsgator Online account and NNW never show the same number of unread articles, often 100's unreunreaddiscrepancy.

I will say this, when I delete a feed, and sync, that is almost instantaneous, and some feeds seem to work better than others....Like my Twins (as in the baseball team) feed is always up to date...but my NYT Technology feed keeps downloading the same HR Block and Turbo Tax articles over and over again.

Hope this gets fixed, I love the tool on my iPhone and really enjoy Newsgator Online at work and at home.

I have the same problem and I just downloaded and installed the NNW app.

Exactly how accurate is NewsGator and NNW(on mac) supposed to be?

I have 640 unread in NNW, 658 in NewsGator Online, and 310 unread on the iPhone.

Is the 18 difference pretty normal? I know the iPhone is way off.

Same problem. I had about 2000 posts unread and read them all, but my iPhone still thinks they're unread. Pressing the Sync button a couple of times or waiting (it's been a few days now) doesn't help either.

I too am seeing this problem. I have tried to simplify things by subscribing to all feeds on all locations. I have tried 'Sync News Item Status' menu option as well.

This is a pretty bad problem - if I can't sync these two views of my feeds then I wil have to choose to give up using either NetNewsWire on the Mac or the iPhone - a difficult and unwelcome choice!

I t would be good to hear some acknowledgement of this problem from the good folk at NewsGator....?

I have noticed exactly the same behaviour... when I'm working on 3G. I have noticed two distinct differences between how NNW works when I'm on WiFi and how it works when I am not on Wi-Fi:

1) On WiFi, the read/unread status seems to properly sync with newsgator online just like it does with my desktop. On 3G/EDGE, it seems to download new headlines, but never seems to tell the central server about articles I've read on the iPhone.

2) On WiFi, syncing is very quick -- It seems even quicker than NNW on my Mac, if that's possible. On 3G/EDGE, syncing takes forever -- or at least several minutes in some cases, and many seconds in the very best case.

I can't believe they'd knowingly release a product with this behaviour, so I can only presume that there is some incompatibility between their syncing protocol and my cell provider's (Rogers') data network.

I'm seeing the same glitch. NetNewsWire on the iPhone doesn't seem to pull updates on read status from the newsgator account. Things that I read on my NetNewsWire Mac client are marked as read on newsgator.com but the iPhone app doesn't see the change, even if I manually refresh it.

Yeah, no amount of syncing or refreshing fixes this problem:) And I'm using the same account for both. I've narrowed the problem down a little further:

If I read something on the iPhone, then sync it, the sync NNW on my Mac, everything works. If I read something on the Mac, sync it, the sync the iPhone, it does not sync properly. The iPhone will still have things marked as unread.

It's possible that one or both of the apps aren't syncing often enough. One of the keys is to know that they sync when you refresh your feeds -- they also sync read/unread status at that time. So, sometimes, all that's needed is to make sure you've refreshed recently.

I'm not sure if I just misunderstand how the iPhone app works or if it's just not working:) I would expect the iphone App to sync with Newsgator, and Netnewsire to also sync with Newsgator, and it seems they do individually, however, the iPhone app and Netnewswire is not matching, the iPhone app being the oddball. Right now it says I have 66 unread. Netnewswire says 6, which is correct. Is something going wrong here?
