2.8 RC2: Criteria for text mode adverts

I was curious to read
* Changed: Embedded ad now becomes a text ad when resolution is 1024x768 or lower
in the release notes.

I'd be much happier though if the size of the app window would be analyzed instead of the size of the desktop, as I never run FeedDemon maximized on my 1280x1024 screen. I currently have a folder pane height of 457 pixels in a 967x747px window. (The ad is 210x160px.)

More panic button time options?

Is there any chance of getting more customizability for the Panic Button? I have found since 2.7 was released that I'm making much, much more use out of it, but I'd like a little more control. In my case, I would normally like to mark as read everything that didn't post today, rather than 24 hours, but there's no setting between "all" and "24 hours".

The error happened while FD was minimized and the computer was locked. I have attached a screenshot. I think that FD was trying to display the panic button. I'm running WinXP SP3 with IE7

If there's [i]one[/i] thing that makes me want to switch to a new reader, it's ads that can't be turned off.

I do *not* want to stare at ads monopolizing a significant portion of my screen. FeedDemon should just have remained a paid application if that was the goal. I'm far more willing to pay for an application than to be forced into looking at advertisements the entire time I use the program.

[2.8RC1] Incorrect character rendering in feed's newspaper

I would like to report an issue with the rendering of certain text characters in FeedDemon 2.8RC1 (it also is present in v2.7):
certain characters do not appear correctly in the newspaper style display of the feed.

I will illustrate the issue with an example, a posting from the Wall Street Journal's Real-Time Economics blog feed. (This is just one example, I have seen this issue with many other feeds).

First, here is a screenshot (and a close-up of part of it) of the way the right-single-quotation-mark character in the text of the posting is rendered correctly in Internet Explorer 7 (the HTML engine which FeedDemon uses on my computer, as it is my default browser):

Please look at the blue highlighted text ("Fed’s") in the close-up screenshot: notice that the right-single-quotation mark (Unicode decimal character code 8217) between "Fed" and "s" is visible and rendered correctly by the browser.

Second, here is a screenshot (and a close-up of part of it) of the way the text of this posting is rendered incorrectly in FeedDemon's newspaper:

Notice that the right-single-quotation-mark character is missing: it is not displayed but was replaced by blank space.

Note that this is not the only character which is not rendered correctly in the newspaper style. Other Unicode characters exhibit the same problem.

Here is another example, the incorrect rendering of the "EN dash" (Unicode decimal character code 8211):

FD jumps to front when closing notification window

If I have FD non-minimized (usually maximized) behind other windows and I click the "X" on the Feed Notification when it comes appears, FD will jump to the front and grab focus

[2.8 RC1] TechCrunch RSS Feed Consistently Crashes FD

I think it has to do with the fact that TC's feed has a lot more than just text (sends through images, embedded video, etc.) but it almost always causes a long hang or an outright crash of FD, which is becoming frustrating. I should note that I have noticed this with FD 2.7, though not as frequently. Here's the RSS feed URL:

I hesitate to post this since it's just one feed, but since multi-media RSS feeds are becoming more and more common (embedded ads, etc.), I thought I'd point it out in case this is something that can be investigated a bit.

If sending my full feed list as OPML (I subscribe to 54 feeds) offline is helpful in case it's not isolated to this one feed, I'm happy to send that along as well.

System:
FD 2.8 RC1
Windows XP SP2, fully patched
Using IE as default internal browser

Unable to drag multiple flagged items to clippings -- error msg

Hi -- in the process of migrating to the Mac and NetNewsWire, I wanted to preserve hundreds of saved flagged messages from FeedDemon. I was told that while old flagged messages wouldn't sync, that I could drag them to clippings folders to bring them across.

Unfortunately, I seem to have run into a FeedDemon bug that's preventing me from dragging more than a few flagged items at once into a clippings bin.

Problem with IE subwindow after wake up

Hi,

Running FD 2.8 RC1 in Vista SP1 x86 on my laptop.

If FD is minimised from a full-screen windows with a particular news item opened in the IE window. I close the laptop lid (and it goes to sleep). When I wake up the laptop and maximise FD the IE windows does not stretch all the way to the right of the FD window, there is a gap of a couple of hundred pixels.

I need to double click on the title bar to make the window not full screen and then back to restore the proper behaviour.

This has been the case for at least a couple of versions and occurs under XP as well.

[2.8RC1] Share open article

Hi,

I am one of those people who has not known about clippings sharing and it seems like a great idea.

However, it would seem to me that the moment that I would decide to share an article would be as I am reading it when the news item is open and not while in the newspaper view. However, the share button is only present in the latter, so I have to go back to it to share an article.

This may well be my fault for depending on the news item view, which I am gathering is being deprecated...

Having a share button in the toolbar above the IE windows would be perfect!

[2.8RC1] Some feeds not making folders show up as unread

I just got FeedDemon into an odd situation which I've noticed in the past. It's not a big problem, but if I clear out all of my folders using Ctrl-D to go to the next page, and I've got the feed list set to "unread folders", I see this

1) the last folder will stay visible although not in bold after I read the last feed. I'd expect it to disappear like the folders do while reading them normally.

2) I've got a display right now where I've got one folder listed which isn't bold under "Subscriptions", but I've got two feeds listed in the adjacent Subscriptions page as having unread items. Neither folder that holds those two feeds is visible, but a folder that has no unread items is displayed, but not in bold.

If I switch to "Folder View", then back to "Unread Folder" view, things look correct, so the problem seems to just be in inconsistent updating of the Unread Folder pane.

Obviously, not a critical problem, but I thought it was worth reporting.

[2.8RC1] bug when syncing after install ?

i've justed install 2.8 RC1 on a new box (no existing preferences), configure with a newsgator account, but it doesn't sync.

the only thing which has appearing is "My Clippings" folder.
Subscriptions folder is here and marked as synced but empty.

asking to resync now doesn't do more.
Connection test is OK.
In newsgator, Location is marked sync with all my feeds.

any additional steps ?

Looking for missing toolbuttons or newspaper icons?

As I blogged about recently (here and here), one of my goals with version 2.8 was to simplify the UI by getting rid of lesser-used toolbuttons and newspaper icons. The downside, of course, is that a toolbutton or icon you relied upon in previous versions may no longer be there. But in most cases, the toolbutton or icon wasn't removed completely - it was simply hidden by default, and can easily be added back.

If there's a toolbutton you really need, just click the "Customize" arrow at the far right of the toolbar to add it back. And if there's a newspaper icon you miss, simply click the "Icons..." button on the Reading page in FeedDemon's options to add it back.

Please let me know if you think I made a mistake by hiding a specific toolbutton/icon - that will help me figure out which ones I really need to expose, and which can remain hidden by default.

[2.8RC1] Ad Box Steals Focus

I typically use the arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll up and down through articles in a given feed. With RC1 now, when the ad flips to a new ad, it steals the focus from the article list so that I have to click back into the list everytime an ad changes.

Desktop alert count is cumulative

I'm not sure when this started, or if it's just the feed I'm using (unfortunately it is internal and contains sensitive data) but the desktop alert is cumulative for me. I have it set to every 30 minutes, and know for a fact that only one new item came in on the feed since the last alert - but it displayed "12 new items". It's been happening for a while, but I didn't really notice what was going on until it hit double digits for a single update :)

[2.8RC1] Fitt's Law - scrollbar for content on right

I've seen this happen a few times and just realized the problem. When FeedDemon is maximized, the scrollbar for the feed content isn't positioned to the edge of the screen. This means that if you slam your mouse to the right edge and try to drag around the position indicator, you'll get no response. You have to pull in the mouse a pixel or two to get this to work.

Can this be adjusted so going to the edge of the screen still allows you to move the scroll bar? The Apple guys have a term for this -- Fitt's Law -- with the idea that things at the edge of the screen are easiest to mouse to since they have infinite hit areas.

Cleanup Wizard Notification layout problem in Subscriptions Home page

OK, I know that people have to wait years to see this, and only poor user who don't have large monitor like me will encounter.

But still, there is a problem (but not 100% necessary to fix or pay attention to or take care or what else).

2.8.0.7 3a: Freeze after checking feeds for errors

FD is having problems synching all of my feeds -- it got the folders starting with N and up, but the earlier ones weren't automatically being synced, although I could manually sync by right clicking on the folder and choosing update folder.

I did the cleanup wizard, but no change. I then did the "Scan Feeds for Errors". It ran but when the progress dialog went away, FD was unresponsive and I eventually had to kill it from Task Manager. On restart, it's still not synching everything.

I had been using NGO while also using FD, but it should be able to handle feed changes on both sides.

Selecting item in treeview doesn't refresh newspaper (2.8 b3a)

When you were viewing a feed/folder in 2.7, if you clicked on the same feed/folder in the treeview the newspaper would refresh. That would show you new items that had arrived while you were reading and remove items marked as read. With 2.8 I have to click on the feed/folder in the treeview twice to get the same result.

Another question on Favorites Menu/function in 2.8b3a

Hi - I'm running FeedDemon 2.8b3a and just "upgraded" IE7 to IE8 beta 2. I had done this when I was running 2.7, but it wasn't working with IE8 yet.

FeedDemon seems to be running fine on IE8 beta, except that when I have a web page open in the browser pane, and I want to add it to my Favorites, I select the Favorites menu item, get the pull-down menu, then try to "Add to Favorites." When I do this the Dialog that IE8 normally displays to add a favorite doesn't appear, so it looks like I can't add web pages to favorites within FeedDemon 2.8 beta (it worked fine with IE7).

Is there another way that I'm missing to add to favorites?

[2.8B3a] Impossible to choose between clipping folders through the "Share" button anymore

Thats was one of my favorite and usefull feature.

My problem is that I cannot choose anymore between my several clipping folders when I click on the "share" icon in front of any item in any feeds.

I just discovered the problem in the 2.8.0.3. Then I've uprgraded to 2.8.0.7 beta 3a...it was the same.

I use a laptop with Windows XP SP3

Text size auto-changing

When first running of 2.8 b2 and b3a (and at various times in 2.7), the text size changes by itself from medium to smaller. In 2.7, it even goes further if you let it. Luckily you have the text size button to change this back, but this seems to be buggy behavior.

If you click on the Favorites menu item and then mouse left/right, the Favorites menu remains up. If you click on any other menu item, then Favorites does not drop down.

Visual indicator of shared items

I was just going through a collection of feeds, adding some of interest to a shared clippings folder by clicking the 'share' link beneath an item's title.

Some items I'd forgotten already shared as the audible alert indicated along with 'Item has already been clipped' text in FD''s status bar.

So what would be really useful, then, is some kind of an indicator that an item has been shared. Maybe a new column simply called 'shared' that could have, say, a green flag?

I for one would love that, very useful indeed.

Btw, I just noticed that a newer beta than the one I'm still running (28b3 or v2.8.0.6) is out, which I've grabbed and will install. Maybe my request is already taken care of :)

2.8b3a - Favicon strangeness

I just noticed that some icons in the Subscriptions list don't match what's showing in the Subscriptions Home - Joel on Software is one, so is Raymond Chen's The Old New Thing. Could be a graphics issue on this older laptop, but I know you were doing some image finagling for favicons recently.

2.8 Beta 3a - Request - Any chance of getting a "tagged" filter

Technically a request and a question.

I'm just about to delete a feed that's been moved to a new site (guess they never heard of redirects...) but I'm not sure whether I have any tagged items and whether I'd lose them if I deleted it.

Request - A "Tagged" filter, like "Flagged" (would give me a quick way to check).

Question - Does deleting a feed with tagged posts remove tagged posts from FD/NGO? If so, a warning might be appropriate when unsubscribing.

Stopping embedded videos from autoplaying?

Is it in any way possible to add a routine that will add an "autoplay=false" variable to any <embed> tag w/flash video content (or replace "autoplay=true" with "autoplay=false")? I get really, really annoyed with embedded videos that start playing on their own - and doubly annoyed that when I mark a page as read, it starts playing AGAIN when page reloads. :angry:

Feature Request for FeedDemon

So, I'm using FD for reading RSS lents which I have more than 200. Some are updating every hour, some - in a week or even less frequently. That's why I suggest next features -

1. In the left panel to the left of feed names place some information about feed - updates in a week/month/day, number of known posts and so on.

2. Google reader can image all posts of the feed from the beginning. Is there any possibility that FD will have the same ability?

3. Why there is only a RootFolder/Folder/Feeds ierarchy? Can you allow more nested subfolders?

PS. English is not my native language. So I'm slacking in it. Thanks for the attention.

Are you intending that tags should synchronise between copies of FD (assuming that they are set up to synch).

I understand that this might mean some platform changes.

I don't see synchronisation at the moment.

Hi folks,

Sorry for such a quick turnaround (again), but I wanted to get a new beta out to help those localizing FeedDemon. To download it, please stop by the FeedDemon Beta Site.

Based on posts in these forums, a tool to help "validate" FDLANG files before releasing them was sorely needed, so I've added this tool to Beta 3a. Now when you select a new language file, FeedDemon will check it for missing entries and arguments, and optionally report the errors (should be a big help if you're trying to translate the English language file).

I've also added a popular feature request: the ability to specify (at both the feed and folder level) how many days to keep items. This works in conjunction with the existing "keep the most recent X items" setting to determine which articles to automatically purge from FeedDemon's cache.

As always, please let me know if you run into any problems!

Unread Feeds show up in Subscription Home View but not in Unread Feed View

The way I normally use FeedDemon is to have the left hand pane in "Unread Feed View". That way I can make my way through all of my new content by just pressing "Next Page" until I have gone through all of the Unread Feeds.

When I am done, the page view returns to the Subscription Home view. As often as not, there will be some feeds that show up in the "Feeds with Unread Items". These do not show up in the left pane, not will pressing "Next Page" let me navigate to them. I can click on them from the Subscription Home page and view the unread items, and at that point pressing "Next Page" will clear them and return me to the Subscription Home. But likely there will be more unread feeds on that page and not in the left pane.

Old items in Clipping folder not in clipping feed

I have several clippings folders which had items added to them before the clipping feed feature was introduced. Those items do not appear in any of the clippings feeds.

Could this be because they're not in original feed anymore since they're so old (some are a couple of years)? Is there a way to get these retroactively added to the feed?

Hi - I upgraded to 28b3, but the new What's New page shows up every time on startup, not just the first time after upgrade. I'm not sure if that was the design, but that's the way it seems to be working here.

Panic Buttom 'Items Marked Read' confirmation

I would like a way possibly to disable the popup "** Items Marked Read' after hitting the panic button. I would like it so that after the panic button is finished marking the the articles read, it goes straight to synchronizing.
