However, when NG sync is on, thing function a little differently.

A number of people are under the impression that NNW downloads the posts and then tells NewsGator what it has - but it doesn't actually work like that. With NewsGator Sync, the NewsGator servers download everything from all the source feeds, then NNW gets the information from NewsGator. In this fashion, Refresh and Sync are the same thing (unlike .Mac or FTP) - and also NewsGator is always the master list. As you read something in NNW, it then tells NG that it has been read. Because NG is the one downloading the posts (not NNW) saying "Replace feeds on NewsGator" replaces the Feeds, not the Posts - and might be why read counts are still out - Though I have to Admit they are a LONG way out - Because NNW can't tell NG to mark something read that it doesn't know about.

Here's a suggestion for when you are feeling like syncing again:

Wait till you get to a point where you have pretty much everything read in NNW

Log into NewsGator Online are mark everything as read

Now turn sync back on

For now, I'll continue working with the dev to try and find why it hasn't been keeping in sync to start with.

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

I'm sure no one is using my info, but I went ahead and changed it. It doesn't seem to make any difference. After I changed my password, I used the "start over" feature in NNW and set it to overwrite NGO. It didn't do anything. NNW has 357 unread, and NGO has 6,652.

Right now both NNW and NGO seem to be acting independently of each other. They occasionally talk, but just to screw each other up.

I'm turning off syncing for now. It's the only way NNW stays even remotely accurate on my feeds.

Any other suggestions?

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

This is just getting weird! Is there any chance that someone else could have your username/password and be using the account at another lcoation? We've seen this happen when people sell computers etc and leave the software on it.

Even if you don't think that is the case, can you try changing your password in NewsGator Online, and also NNW and see if that helps at all.

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

When checking in on my feeds this morning, I've noticed that both NNW and NGO have significantly less unread items than they did last night. There also doesn't seem to be an correlation between the two, as to what was marked as read. For instance, one feed said it had 50 unread items last night, in both places. This morning, NNW says 22 (NGO still says 50). Another feed said 28 unread in both places, this morning NNW says 20, and NGO says 26 (I didn't read any).

It's as if they both just started randomly marking items as read.

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

I left for a couple of hours, and when I got back NNW and NGO were already out of sync again. NGO had 120 more unread items than NNW. I refreshed both multiple times to make sure.

Here's what I did to try and fix it... I deleted all my feeds in NGO. Then, I used the "start over" feature in NNW to upload all my feeds to NGO. Now things are really bad... NNW has 975 unread items. NGO has 6,877! Nothing I do puts them back into sync.

At his point I can't tell anymore if the problem is with NNW, or NGO?

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

You beat me to it. This was going to be my test for tonight.

I removed the files / folders, re-launched NNW, and allowed NGO to overwrite the default feeds during the initial sync. Everything appears to be working correctly. It's been less than 1/2 hour since I did it, but all the feeds are now showing both read and unread items, and it seems to stay in sync with NGO.

I've actually been putting this off, because I would lose one very important thing if I had to reset NNW... my flagged items. I tend to use NNW as a bookmark manager, and I have 3 years worth of flagged items (thousands of items).

I was actually wondering if those flagged items may be part of the problem. Does NNW or NGO have some kind of limit, that would be affected by having so many 'extra' items listed with a feed?

Here's a couple of more observations from my /Application Support/NNW folder that may be helpful...

1. My backups folder is 100MB, with backups going back to 2004

2. I have an extra folder called "NewsItems", that has a sub-folder and many files for each feed.

3. I also have many other files and folders that my freshly created app support folder doesn't have. Is it possible something in there is messing things up? Instead of typing it out, I'll just include a screenshot (attachment).

Is there a way I can keep the bulk of my new app support folder, but get my flagged items back?

Thanks for your help.

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

OK, Let's do a little test - We are going to get NNW to think that it is a fresh install:

First, make sure you exit NetNewsWire

Next, move your preference file to the desktop - ~/Library/Preferences/com.ranchero.NewNewsWire.plist

Finally, we'll move all your data so that NNW thinks it is starting form a fresh slate (we can move it back later if we need to). Move this folder to your desktop as well - ~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/

Now start NNW again, and see if the read states match up to NGO - if they don't, can you check for any messages in the Window > Errors List

If you STILL have trouble, we'll need to turn on debug mode and find out what is going on with the syncing...

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

I've tried the 3.0.1 beta. It hasn't helped.

Also, since syncing with Newsgator, the problem has gotten progressively worse. Most of my feeds are now broken. Some don't update at all. Other appear to be working, but they're only grabbing some posts. You can't tell they're not working unless you do a side-by-side comparison with the site.

Right now NNW shows 520 unread items, yet Newsgator online shows 1180 unread. Some items in NNW also won't show the unread posts. For example, TUAW.com only shows the items I've flagged. Occasionally a single item will come in, but then it will disappear later on.

This is very discouraging. NNW used to be so good.

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

I haven't tried the 3.0.1 beta, but I can tell you that the problem appears to be in NNW, and not in the feeds. Yesterday I switched from syncing with .Mac to syncing with Newsgator and saw something interesting. Most, if not all of the feeds that won't update in NNW, show up fine online in Newsgator.

I would prefer not to use a beta. Is there an estimated release date for 3.0.1?

UPDATE: I just noticed that many more of my feeds are now broken, ever since I started syncing with Newsgator. They show up correctly online, but in NNW, the unread posts just aren't showing up. This is extremely annoying, since I don't like using the online reader. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which ones break, or what posts they will show.
RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

Can you try the latest NNW 3.0.1 beta and tell me if you still see the problem. When I first upgraded I was syncing via .Mac. Then I tried Newsgator for a day or two, then went back to .Mac.

It's hard to tell if it made any difference, just because of the high number of feeds I have, and the fact that only some of them are affected.

RE: NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

Are you using any type of Sync??

NNW 3.0 doesn't update all my 2.1 feeds

I upgraded to NNW 3.0 the day it came out. Everything seemed to work fine, but since then I've noticed that many of my feeds aren't updating. Scheduled, or manual refresh does nothing. The only way to get the feeds to work again is to delete it, and re-add it.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Re-adding all my feeds isn't a very good option, as I have 300+, and almost all of them have flagged items that would be lost.
