I'm having difficulties getting Newsgator working.

1. Installed Newsgator 1.3, which automatically installed .net.  Created a new folder "News" under "Personal Folders".

2. The Newsgator home page is displayed, but clicking "Refresh" does nothing.

3. Clicking "Get news now" in the Newsgator toolbar displays the Status Window, which shows Newsgator attempting to retrieve the two default Newsgator rss feeds, with status "Retrieving."

4. Both error out.  Error message:  "Error: The operation has timed-out."

System setup:

Win 2K with the latest SPs and critical hot fixes installed. Outlook 2003.

D-Link 614+ firewall, with a local proxy running on port 8000.  This has been configured as follows:  Newsgator home page > "Customize" > Connection > Use specific proxy server > "localhost:8000" with "Bypass proxy server for local addresses" = checked.

Changing proxy settings to "Use IE proxy settings" also doesn't work.

All other network connections and IE work, so Newsgator should have connectivity.  However, my proxy log shows no outbound requests from Newsgator.

Disabling the proxy (i.e. setting it for transparent passthrough) results in the following error message in the Newsgator Status Window:  'Error: The type initializer for "System.net.dns" threw an exception'

Changing proxy settings to "Do not use a proxy server" results in the "Error: The operation has timed-out."

Uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling Newsgator have no effect.

Any suggestions?  Newsgator is completely DOA right now.

Steven

It sounds like you're running into a known problem with the 1.1 version of the .NET framework.

To confirm this is the problem:

  1. Make sure the 1.1 framework is the latest version you have on your system.  In your case, it sounds like that is the case.  You can confirm this by looking in the \Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework directory, and looking at the subdirectories.  If you have a "v1.1.4322" directory, and no others with later version numbers, then this patch may apply to you.

  2. Download the following application: enum.zip

  3. Extract the contained enum.exe and run it from a command prompt.  This will enumerate the protocol bindings on your system.  In the far left column will be the protocol numbers; "Protocol 34" for example.  See what the last protocol number is - if it is greater than 50, then this is most likely the problem, and you should download the hotfix.

If in step 3 above, you confirmed that you need the hotfix, then download and install it from the appropriate link below.  Be sure to install the appropriate version for your operating system.

For all systems EXCEPT Windows 2003 Server:

Thanks, Greg.  That was precisely the problem.  Downloaded the first patch listed and Newsgator is now working like a charm.  Now eagerly copying all my FeedDemon newsfeeds into Newsgator to see how Outlook improves things...

Regards,

Steven
