I've recently installed FeedDemon 2.0.0.20.  I'd previously used version 1.5 with Bloglines and everything was fine.  However, since installing 2.0.0.20, problems have started to occur.

Firstly, I've noticed that my Bloglines feeds are not syncing any more.  FeedDemon is still retrieving new feed content, but is no longer marking downloaded items as read within Bloglines.  All of my Bloglines feeds are showing new items that go back to the date when I installed FeedDemon 2.

Not being cynical or anything :-) but I figured FeedDemon is part of Newsgator now, so maybe the Newsgator sync would work better.  I had an online account for Newsgator that I set up a while ago when I was comparing features of web based readers, so I tried to get that going.  However, it appears that Newsgator syncing doesn't work from behind a proxy.

In FeedDemon, I went to Tools, Options and then clicked the Synchronization button.  I entered my username and password for Newsgator, then clicked the Choose button to pick a location.  However, all I get is a dialog with [server error] in it.  This is running on a corporate laptop, so when I got it home I plugged it in to my ADSL and this dialog correctly displayed the locations I have defined in Newsgator.  Everything else seems to work from behind the proxy, but not this particular feature.

If I try to import my Newsgator feeds into FeedDemon, a similar proxy related problem occurs.  I click on File, Import Feeds, select Import my Newsgator subscriptions and then click Next.  For a split second, the next dialog appears, but immediately it flicks back to the previous dialog.  I'm guessing this is again related to not being able to contact Newsgator through the proxy.

This is pretty disappointing.  FeedDemon 2 looks great and FeedStation seems to be working just fine - either at home or through my company proxy server.  However, being unable to sync feeds so I can read them at work, offline on the train or at home on my laptop or personal PC is a key feature for me.

Is anyone else having similar proxy related problems?

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem and I've managed to solve the Bloglines part of it. So here's some info for those of you who might be stuck too.

Newsgator sync: This definitely doesn't work from behind a proxy. This weekend, I tried syncing my laptop whilst at home and it worked fine. Got to the office this morning and it failed on the same laptop. I checked the eventlog.xml and is was reporting http status 407, which basically means the proxy is asking for authentication. Evidently, FeedDemon can't handle this :-(

Bloglines sync: Got this working. Two problems. First, the move from FeedDemon 1.5 to 2.0 seemed to break the link between the existing subscriptions and their counterparts in Bloglines. I believe this was down to folders and did the following to prove it: If I deleted a couple of feeds and then reimported them from Bloglines, they updated correctly. If I then moved those feeds into a folder within FeedDemon, they downloaded to FeedDemon ok, but did not sync back their status to Bloglines. So, I deleted all of my FeedDemon subscriptions, reimported them all and accepted the default to create folders automatically, rather than placing all the feeds into "Subscriptions". The syncing started to work again.

The second problem with Bloglines was that the password seemed to be broken somehow. I found the section in FeedDemon where my Bloglines password was stored (it's moved to Tools -> Options -> Passwords -> Services for those of you still looking!) re-entered it and it all started working again.

Newsgator guys: Can we get the Newsgator sync problem recorded as an official bug? It basically means that I can't use Newsgator web edition to sync so I'm going to be using Bloglines instead. I'm sure you'd rather I used Newsgator instead :-)

Did you add your proxy details to Tools->Options->General Tab->Connection Button->Proxy Tab?

Yup, the proxy details are all there.  FeedDemon (now) works perfectly well through the proxy with Bloglines sync and standalone feeds are fine too.  It's purely Newsgator sync that isn't working.  In fact, even trying to set the sync options fails.  If I try to view/change locations in Tools -> Options -> Synchronisation I just get a the message "[server error]" appearing in the box.  Again, if I try this at home, it works fine - thus verifying that this seems to be a failure of FeedDemon to handle proxies when using Newsgator sync.

Cheers,
Mark.

Nope, only thing it verifies is that your installation of FD is having a problem reaching the NG servers at work.

Have you checked with your network admin to see if the NG server is blocked by either the proxy or a firewall (or firewall software on a server), or maybe FD packets are just being stopped cold, or some other network issue? That would be my first place to look, because a) FD works fine for you at home, so nothing's installed incorrectly as far as FD is concerned and b) other people don't have problems with synced feeds through proxies, which belies your statement above. The symptoms are just screaming network issue rather than FeedDemon issue.

Well, if other people have got Newsgator/FD syncing happily over a proxy, them I'm more than happy to accept it's a problem with the proxy servers at work.  They're pretty poor and lots of stuff that isn't explicity blocked just doesn't work.  I've got it all working with Bloglines now, so I'm happy with that solution.

Cheers,
Mark

There definitely seem to be some issues regarding NG sync through proxies.  See: http://www.newsgator.com/forum/shwmessage.aspx?ForumID=14&MessageID=15579&TopicPage=2

There's a (completely unofficial) workaround in that thread.

Thanks for the tip.  I've had a look through that post and it looks as though I'm hitting the exact same problem.  I'll wager if I decide to convert from trial to full I'll have the same activation problems if I try it at work.  I tried to go for the "unofficial solution", but looks like a web content filter is stopping me from getting to the download!

There are going to be lots of corporate customers who cannot get through their firewall/proxy and most of them wont persevere as long as me or the poster on the other thread.  They'll just think it's not meant to be and give up pretty quickly.  Even if this is a proxy config problem, it's NewsGator that looks bad from the user's perspective.  Especially as non-NG syncronised feeds, Bloglines feeds and FeedStation all seem to work fine.

FeedDemon should be handling authenticated proxies. We've added a connection test to the next build that should help with troubleshooting. I've added a high-priority bug to look into proxy issues in general. (56569)
