Here are a couple of easy ones... I got a new laptop yesterday and will be spending some time this weekend getting it up and running. In doing so:

1. Will I run into any issues with registering/authenticating it on this new machine? Is there a way to un-authenticate it on the previous machine so that all remains kosher?

2. What's the best way to move all of my folders, feeds, and items over to the new machine? In the past, I'd have just copied my cache folder over and pointed the new FD install to it. Now, though, should I just tell the new install to fetch from the NGO servers?

Thanks,

Jeff

If I understood you well:

1. No; you may install FD2 on several machines, using the same license key
(see: http://www.bradsoft.com/support/faq/faqitem.asp?id=90)
Why should you un-authenticate? There's no reason to do so, in my opinion.

2. If you have a Newsgator Online (NGO) account: just install FD2 on the new machine and sync with NGO. Alternatively you can do it your way (copying maps), but synching is easier.

On #1... I know that the license ALLOWS me to isntall it on both machines, but am concerned that the NGO licensing will freak out. There are reports elsewhere in the forum of people getting a message about license count being exceeded. This will be the third machine to get FD2 in as many weeks (home machine, work machine, and now the replacement work machine), so I'd like to avoid getting that message over the weekend. If I can do that by "unregistering" from the current work machine, that's what I'd like to do. Having someone from NG comment on this would help.

On #2... I'm just not sure which is easier, in terms of moving watches, news bins, and so on.

Those sure look like softballs on the first pass, but when I think about #2 for a bit, I'm not so sure. Easy one first:

#1 - There isn't a way to deauthorize your current install, but that's a great idea and I've added a request for it. (57001)

#2 - Because Watches and News Bins aren't synched, relying completely on NGO to move your config to the new computer won't work. (There are requests for these).

Another consideration is that you will lose the content already stored in FD's cache. For some that's not an issue, but for others that could be a big problem.

I think you could copy the cache from the old system to the new one, but you'll have to make sure you get the default cache path correct since that's what the new install will first look. By default, that location is:
C:\Documents and Settings\{windows user name}\Local Settings\Application Data\FeedDemon\v1\

So to try this, I think the steps I'd use would be:
- Copy cache from old to new computer
- Install FD2 and run it
- Because you'll have an existing FD2 cache, the first run wizard shouldn't prompt you to import. But if it does, skip that step.

This procedure concerns me, though. I'm worried you may get duplication of subscriptions in one place or the other.

This is something that FD2 needs to make easier to do. There's a feature request in place for this, but I've added more detail from this thread. (53750)

Let me know if that works for you.

Hi Jack,

I ended up moving the cache folder's contents from the old computer to the new. Your assumptions on how it would work were close, but I made it trickier in that I don't use the default cache location (It's a dev machine and I have a number of drive partitions to organize and ease backups and rebuilds).

In any case, I copied the files and installed FD2 on the new machine. After it ran and did the login/auth steps (which went fine, thankfully), it did prompt me to import. At that point, I told it not to do anything yet and finished the wizard... so FD's subscriptions were empty.

Then, I used the Manage Cache to point to the location of the files I'd copied from the previous machine. After FD told me it needed to restart, I did and all seems well. Once I sync'd all folders, it sure seems that everything was fine -- minus the obvious stuff like my settings from Tools-Options.

Thanks for the help,

Jeff
