Just another data point - I have the same problem as the OP. I've tried your suggested fix (deleting .plist and the NNW folder in ~/Library/Application Support, but the issue still persists. Pretty much the same setup as the OP too - MBP C2D 2.16GHz / 3GB / OSX 10.4.9.

Hope a fix is available soon - this issue makes NNW a no-go for me too...

Peter

I think I may have figured this out -- if I'm right, the fix will be in 3.0.1. (Which I'm already working on.)

In case this helps (although I see Brent says he thinks he has a fix)...

I'm having the same problem with NetNewsWire 3.0; my Mac won't automatically go to sleep when NetNewsWire 3.0 is running. I did not have this problem with NetNewsWire 2.1.1.

I have a Mac Pro running Mac OS X 10.4.9. I am using the release build of NetNewsWire 3.0 (3.0/1130).

My NetNewdWire refresh time is set to 30 minutes; normally my sleep time is set to 15 minutes (and "put the hard disks to sleep when possible" is checked).

For testing purposes, I set my Energy Saver settings to computer sleep at 1 min, display sleep at 1 min, and checked "put the hard disks to sleep when possible" checkbox.

Here's what I tried:

* Restarted computer into my normal user account. No applications besides DragThing running. Computer goes to sleep automatically (after about 2 minutes).

* Run NetNewsWire 3.0 (so now NNW and DragThing are the only apps running). Computer would not go to sleep automatically.

* Quit NetNewsWire. Removed my preferences file (~/Library/Preferences/com.ranchero.NetNewsWire.plist) and Application Support folder (~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/).

* Ran NetNewsWire. Computer would not go to sleep automatically. (So it doesn't appear to be a problem with those preferences.)

* Created a new user account. Set Mac to automatically log into that new user account. Restarted Mac.

* After restart into the new user account, I did not run any apps. Waited, and computer went to sleep automatically.

* Ran NetNewsWire in the new user account. Waited. Computer would not go to sleep automatically.

I also have a PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.4.9. NetNewsWire 3.0 also prevents it from going to sleep automtically. I followed exactly the same testing steps as above, with exactly the same results.

Manually putting the Mac to sleep works fine on both Macs when NetNewsWire 3.0 is running.

Let me know if there's more testing I can do or data I can gather...

Thanks,

Scott McGuire

Saft! I had these issues myself. For a different reason, I uninstalled Saft. Now my mac is sleeping like a baby. Are other people with issues running saft as well?

Some people post their problems with it on MacUpdate and VersionTracker. I ditched it long ago after it started conflicting with PithHelmet, my most essential Safari plugin. And I've since installed SafariStand, which co-exists with PithHelmet and combined with SafariSource, TabStop, and DownloadComment I get features that are similar to and/or more useful to me than those in Saft. In other words, Saft would be mostly redundant for me now.

No, I'm not running Saft - never have - but as described above, I have the problem with NetNewsWire 3.0 keeping my Mac from sleeping.

In case it helps, i have the same problem. If NNW is open, the mac does not go to sleep. If I quite the application, it works again...

Yes, very sad. At the moment i've quit using NNW because of this bug. And it seems the developers have no idea how to fix it, right?

There are a number of things that might prevent the system from going to sleep -- disk and network activity, for instance. I've ruled out a number of possibilities, but I haven't necessarily found the fix yet. That doesn't mean I've stopped looking. It's a puzzle, but it's not a mystery.
