I upgraded to NNW 3.0 the day it came out. Everything seemed to work fine, but since then I've noticed that many of my feeds aren't updating. Scheduled, or manual refresh does nothing. The only way to get the feeds to work again is to delete it, and re-add it.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Re-adding all my feeds isn't a very good option, as I have 300+, and almost all of them have flagged items that would be lost.

Yes. When I first upgraded I was syncing via .Mac. Then I tried Newsgator for a day or two, then went back to .Mac.

It's hard to tell if it made any difference, just because of the high number of feeds I have, and the fact that only some of them are affected.

Can you try the latest NNW 3.0.1 beta and tell me if you still see the problem. If you do, I'd love the URLs of the feeds that aren't updating so that I can check into them.

I haven't tried the 3.0.1 beta, but I can tell you that the problem appears to be in NNW, and not in the feeds. Yesterday I switched from syncing with .Mac to syncing with Newsgator and saw something interesting. Most, if not all of the feeds that won't update in NNW, show up fine online in Newsgator.

I would prefer not to use a beta. Is there an estimated release date for 3.0.1?

UPDATE: I just noticed that many more of my feeds are now broken, ever since I started syncing with Newsgator. They show up correctly online, but in NNW, the unread posts just aren't showing up. This is extremely annoying, since I don't like using the online reader. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which ones break, or what posts they will show.

I've tried the 3.0.1 beta. It hasn't helped.

Also, since syncing with Newsgator, the problem has gotten progressively worse. Most of my feeds are now broken. Some don't update at all. Other appear to be working, but they're only grabbing some posts. You can't tell they're not working unless you do a side-by-side comparison with the site.

Right now NNW shows 520 unread items, yet Newsgator online shows 1180 unread. Some items in NNW also won't show the unread posts. For example, TUAW.com only shows the items I've flagged. Occasionally a single item will come in, but then it will disappear later on.

This is very discouraging. NNW used to be so good.

OK, Let's do a little test - We are going to get NNW to think that it is a fresh install:

  • First, make sure you exit NetNewsWire

  • Next, move your preference file to the desktop - ~/Library/Preferences/com.ranchero.NewNewsWire.plist

  • Finally, we'll move all your data so that NNW thinks it is starting form a fresh slate (we can move it back later if we need to). Move this folder to your desktop as well - ~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/

Now start NNW again, and see if the read states match up to NGO - if they don't, can you check for any messages in the Window > Errors List

If you STILL have trouble, we'll need to turn on debug mode and find out what is going on with the syncing...

You beat me to it. This was going to be my test for tonight.

I removed the files / folders, re-launched NNW, and allowed NGO to overwrite the default feeds during the initial sync. Everything appears to be working correctly. It's been less than 1/2 hour since I did it, but all the feeds are now showing both read and unread items, and it seems to stay in sync with NGO.

I've actually been putting this off, because I would lose one very important thing if I had to reset NNW... my flagged items. I tend to use NNW as a bookmark manager, and I have 3 years worth of flagged items (thousands of items).

I was actually wondering if those flagged items may be part of the problem. Does NNW or NGO have some kind of limit, that would be affected by having so many 'extra' items listed with a feed?

Here's a couple of more observations from my /Application Support/NNW folder that may be helpful...

1. My backups folder is 100MB, with backups going back to 2004

2. I have an extra folder called "NewsItems", that has a sub-folder and many files for each feed.

3. I also have many other files and folders that my freshly created app support folder doesn't have. Is it possible something in there is messing things up? Instead of typing it out, I'll just include a screenshot (attachment).

Is there a way I can keep the bulk of my new app support folder, but get my flagged items back?

Thanks for your help.
