I'm sorry, I really tried, but my unread feeds hit 1500+ in the past ten days because I just do not have the time to sit through the "Loading" screen and all that loads behind it every time I change feeds or mark a page read.

For instance, with the Beta reader, just tonight, I clicked on a feed at 8:20:48, and it loaded at 8:23:34. Three minutes? In the Classic reader, it took ten seconds for the same feed to load. I wanted to get with the times, but after three week I found I prefer the classic reader.

For the record, I'm running Firefox on a 500Mhz PC with WinXPSP2 and 192 MB of RAM.

Good luck tweaking this beta,
Lynda

Hi Lynda,

I'm sorry that you are having so much trouble! We haven't had any reports of any slowness that is even close to as bad as you are seeing. And unfortunately we haven't been able to reproduce it at this end. Would you be able to answer some questions and run some tests to see if we can try to narrow down the problem? 3mins compared to 10secs is obviously rediculous!

  1. What type of internet connection do you have? (Dial-up, DSL etc)
  2. What version of FireFox are you using? (1.5 or 2.0)
  3. Does the beta perform better if you use IE (if yet, what version are you running)
  4. Do you have any Add-ons for FireFox
  5. Does the beta perform better if you start FireFox in safe-mode (there should be a safe-mode link in your start menu)

Thanks again for the feedback!

I tried to make all of this as concise as possible, it looks like the safe mode of Firefox had the only result that actually gave me any clue as to what slows the reader down. (I have the whole thing below, but Firefox safe mode gave me a "Stop script/continue" dialog on "Read nmp.newsgator.com")

The issue I'm having is sporadic, but when I have enough feeds (75 unread in news alone today) it becomes noticable. When I started testing today, Firefox averaged a load time of 40-50 seconds in Classic and 30-40 in Beta. I thought whatever the issue was had been fixed, but then I clicked "Mark All Posts On The Page Read", the loading pop-up came up for 3:30 (5:39:21 - 5:42:51). At the time, there were only 25 unread posts on the page I wanted to mark read, and they were all text posts.

For the tests I did, I started from a clean reboot and had nothing else running.

1. What type of internet connection do you have? (Dial-up, DSL etc)
1.5 Mbps DSL (it's meant to be 3.0, but I get 1.5 on DSLreports.com's speed tester.)

2. What version of FireFox are you using? (1.5 or 2.0)
1.5.0.8

3. Does the beta perform better if you use IE (if yet, what version are you running)
It runs about the same (see below) and I'm using IE 6.0.2900

What I noticed when running the beta in IE, was that the top frame loaded by 5:50, but the left-hand list of feeds and right-hand window where the feeds should be stayed blank with Loading pop-up until 5:51:14. (A minor quibble, but I figured I'd note it.)

Feeds took 36 seconds to load, but I could not scroll for another minute (5:52:20-5:53:26). Even then, IE still listed 67 items remaining, and it took another three minutes (until 5:56:17) for it to count down to 5, where it stayed. The feeds I was working with were again mostly text, I believe the items were the icons for "mark as read," "add to clipping," etc., and the final 5 items never loaded. I can't tell what those 5 were, because it appeared all the icons were there.

After that, I clicked on my folder for unread blogs, and that took one minute to load. I clicked "Mark All In Feed Read" on a feed that had only five posts, and it took 1:19 (from 5:58:03 to 5:59:22) to mark the posts read. I repeated this with another feed that had seven posts, and it took almost two minutes (5:59:58 to 6:01:54) to complete.

4. Do you have any Add-ons for FireFox
Yes, an extension that adds "View in IE" to the context menu (I don't believe that interferes), DeskCut (which is another context menu add-on), an eBay-related context menu extension, and AdBlock, which I disabled to test the speed (there was no difference).

5. Does the beta perform better if you start FireFox in safe-mode (there should be a safe-mode link in your start menu)
In safe mode, it took from 6:06:03 to 6:08:40 for any kind of result. On the status bar, it said, "Read nmp.newsgator.com" and a dialog box came up saying "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete."

I clicked continue, to give it a little more time, and the feed showed up at 6:10:06 but I was not yet able to scroll through the feed window, and the feed I was working with was obviously going to continue past the end of the screen. Control returned at 6:11:25, and marking feeds as read took only 12 seconds (from 6:12:38 - 6:12:50).

I closed FF safe mode, opened it again, and got the same dialog box and "Read nmp.newsgator.com" in the status bar. Not sure if that means anything to you, I hope it does.

Hope all of this helped, I'll keep trying the beta when I have time,
Lynda

Thanks for the thorough feedback! I've passed it to the Developers, and it looks like they have some good stuff to work with.

Hi,

I would like to say that I have exactly the same problem. NewsGator is soooo slow (mean many minutes) to open a branch . I use Firefox 2.0.0.4 but it's the same with IE 6. Moreover the entire browser is freezing, while I open a branch I can't do anything else in Firefox until the response is back. This is really annoying to a point that NEwsGator is useless.

Please do something on that !

Just as an FYI - I'm experiencing the same problem with my newsgator account.. Firefox seems extremely slow when I am using my work PC with newsgator online. IE seems slow too but not nearly as bad as Firefox. I'm seeing the main problem when I mark a post of a whole feed as read.

Firefox 2.0.0.13

Let me know if you need any more info..
