I'm currently using NNW 3.1b18.
For whatever reason, I'm able to connect and sync the iPhone reader with NewsGator Online (NGO) without difficulty. I frequently add clippings to read later from a desktop machine. It's an easy way to keep the unread state of actual feeds from getting out of hand. The unread/read state of news items as well as clippings are completely as they should be.
However, on my Mac, there are no new clippings since August 9. I don't know what version of NNW I was using then, or what version I upgraded to at that point, but since then there has been no syncing of the Clippings.
I'm beginning to suspect that NNW isn't even syncing with NGO at all - although it seems that some of the news items I mark as read on my iPhone are synced as read on NNW.
There is definitely a discrepancy though, and the Clippings are definitely not being synced. In the errors window, I get a large number of errors listed but I can't quite understand what they mean. A frequent one is:
2007-09-18 19:07:45 -0700: Download Error: timed out after 60.000000 seconds URL: http://services.newsgator.com/ngws/svc/PostItem.asmx
Does anyone have any clues as to what the issue is? Is this because it's an incomplete (but great) beta?
Thanks,
Andrew Elliston

It sounds like NetNewsWire is having trouble connecting to NGO - Can you go to Window > Connection Tester and paste the results in here.

(un)fortunately, the Connection Test process worked:
# External site: Passed
# NewsGator via http: Passed

I'm still able to update my feeds in NNW, but the read/unread status and clippings are not reflected on the NGO servers (I don't know why - and haven't since August 9). My iPhone is able to do this syncing without any difficulty (maybe just because it loads it up fresh each time). I've even tried to start fresh with a new user account on this computer and NNW 3.1b18, but get the same problem. For several beta versions now, I get a silent crash and quit in NNW within 30 minutes or so of not using the program. It has yet to crash on me during active use. I don't know if that is related to the problem I'm describing above or not.
Thanks!

I am expiriencing no crashes at all... but i have the syncing problems too!
I am fairly new to NetNewsWire, and i am using the demo at the moment.
And i have a NGO account.
Using NNW locally works like a charm and i would buy a license... if the syncing with NGO would work.
I can see all subscribed feeds... but read/unread status is NOT synced.
All feed entries ar marked unread in NGO.
Any ideas regarding this issue ?
Or is it nor working because of the demo mode ?
Edit: Justed tested the latest beta: If i subscribe a new feed, it is listed in NGO! But if i organize that feed into a new folder, that is beeing ignored within NGO.
Read/Unread still beein unsynced
Edit2: Just tested on... Is it possible that i have to CLOSE NNW on my mac to get everything synced ? i thought refreshing all feeds should be enough... but now i think closing the app on my mac solves the problem.

Hmmm, I too am not getting any sync'ing action. But I am seeing this in the Error Logs ...
----
2007-10-18 08:11:47 -0400: CreateLocation: status code: 500 soapFaultCode: soap:Client soapFaultString: InvalidName
Location 'NetNewsWire-Bruce_Walker_s_computer' already exists
2007-10-18 09:04:29 -0400: CreateLocation: status code: 500 soapFaultCode: soap:Client soapFaultString: InvalidName
Location 'NetNewsWire-Bruce_Walker_s_computer' already exists
----
I ran the Connection Tests at about 9:04 AM and every listed test passed.
I haven't touched my Preferences (especially sync prefs) in months.

That particular error ("InvalidName
Location 'NetNewsWire-Bruce_Walker_s_computer' already exists") isn't really an error -- in fact, the next build won't report it.

| Bruce -- when you say you're not getting any syncing action -- can you be more specific about what this means? I assume NetNewsWire is downloading your news, for instance. What is it that doesn't work?

Hi Brent! Glad you mentioned that that message isn't a real error. I was just about to try "Starting Over".
My setup is simple: two Macs, home and work. NNW is only ever running on one or the other (I shut NNW down when I leave that location). What I've been seeing more and more lately is that news I've _definitely_ read in one location shows up as unread in the other when I arrive there (eg at work in the morning). It was only the odd item now and then until just recently; now it's been a number of items in many of the feeds I read regularly. Some "stuck" news items stay that way for days until I manually read them to clear the unread status in that group. I was beginning to think that sync'ing had failed altogether.
Well that just figures: I'm presently at home and I've got both copies of NNW up at the same time (via VNC to work). And I can't find any non-sync'ed news items now. The counts all look right and all the feeds I've inspected compare exactly.
So I'll just monitor the situation for a while and see if it stays good.

| Bruce - did you run the connection test at home or work? Make sure you do both. We've had cases of Firewalls/Proxy's in the workplace that can be blocking either SOAP or port 443 - By going through the VPN you may be bypassing the problem. The other thing to ensure is that you are using a different location name for each computer. If you use the same location, the sync tokens will get jumbled and cause sync problems.
