Hi, have my reading set up to go to an external browser (firefox). But everytime I click a link the browser gets the focus.
But I prefer to click all the headlines then read them all later. Is there a way I can keep FeedDemon with the focus until I've finished selecting all my stories?

One thing to check is in Firefox under Tools->Options->Tabs, make sure that "When new tab is opened, switch to it immediately" is unchecked.
The other thing you can do since you're using Firefox is install the Tabbrower Preferences add-on to Firefox which gives you finer control over what happens to new tabs and has it's own "Tab focus" section. I have it set to open new tabs in the background. I just tried it, and anything I open from FD in an external browser opens in a new tab in Firefox, but in the background, FD stays in focus

Thanks for the tip about the Tabbrowser Preference add-on.
For me, unchecking "When new tab is opened, switch to it immediately" in the normal Firefox preference was not sufficient to prevent FeedDemon losing focus, but using the add-on and checking "Load windows diverted into tabs in the background" does the trick.

In Firefox, an easier solution is to set the
browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground option to true in the about:config section

This really should be coded into FeedDemon. It can't be a big feat. I mean lots of programs do it. Example Notepad++ does it; double-clicking links in documents (when the "clickable link" setting is on) opens those links in default browser so that the focus comes back to Notepad++. I'm sure that it's not a big thing to code.
If it's impossible for FD devs, another way is to make an option to keep FD window on top (maybe a button in the title bar besides the normal min/restore/close buttons?). That would work also.
Currently I'm using "Launch On Top" program to start FeedDemon. It keeps FD always on top and links open in Opera behind. I just minimize (FD goes to systray) after clicking all I want to and start reading in Opera. Using this Launch On Top one must let the FD to open completely (there's a major lag opening it... IE engine loading?) before doing anything.. else the "on top" fails.

Nope. One of the most insulting things you can say to a programmer is "it can't be THAT hard to do X. Y program does it!!", so most polite programmers tend to ignore those kinds of questions.

critter42, I see your point. Buuut, I'm a developer myself so that should twist that thing around.. a bit at least. I've actually done that (keep focus/on top) myself with simple AutoIt script for a previous RSS reader I was using. It was not perfect because AutoIt has some limitations/problems, and besides, the best option would be to have it in the main program, not with auxiliary process that keeps hooking/&polling the RSS reader all the time. So, I think that my notion of "it being easy to implement" really wasn't an insult.
I'm a polite developer myself (at least my userbase thinks that way) and I ALWAYS answer users, even if they say that "it should be easy/trivial to implement". In fact, those are the users/questions that MUST be answered.
If you and the dev(s) think that I registered (twice, unfortunately twice) here just to insult devs, well, I can't do much about that but to say that it wasn't my intention at all. And by giving example with other programs could give ideas or help to see the issue better.

| No worries - I didn't take that as an insult at all. The reason I didn't reply is simply because I've been working pretty hard on getting FD3.0 ready and haven't been able to keep on top of everything here in the forums. Anyway, this subject comes up from time-to-time, and I've tried various ways to address it. For example, I've tried explicitly telling Windows to open the browser in the background, but this wasn't reliable - especially with Firefox, which would stay in the background with some versions but not others. I've also tried waiting until the browser appears and then forcing FD back to the front, but this can cause a delay that's more annoying than having the browser come to the front. I see this same issue with some of the apps that people mention as being able to keep the browser in the background. IIRC, Notepad++ was one of these apps - on my system at least, it didn't reliably keep the browser in the background (depending on the version of the browser being used). In the end, I decided to just leave it up to the OS and the browser to do what they've been coded to do. As has been mentioned in this thread, there are browser extensions and/or configuration options that can keep it in the background, and those seem to work well. Best,
Nick Bradbury
