It is an Outlook issue, but there's a feature request for Inbox 3.1 to handle this better. Inbox 3.1 will be mostly changes to the NewsPage by adding a lot more options - that's why it didn't get worked on for Inbox 3.0.
The way I deal with this is to click on the link title to open the Outlook post item in it's own "inspector". If you click on the url there, it will open in FireFox (I'm a FireFox person as well).
Not ideal, but it does work.
I've just discovered NewsGator Inbox from a post on Lifehacker an duly spent an afternoon at work moving my Firefox Live Bookmarks into it. Now I'm doing the same at home! (different set of feeds) Great app, but I have noticed a fair few bugs (will post separately so as not to cause confusion), but I've worked around them, and coincidentally I am living with your suggestion, Nick, for the time being. Looking forward to whatever 3.1 brings in terms of reducing the clicks to open in Firefox!

Is there a 3.1 beta available. I would love to see a better rendering engine than Word 2007 in Outlook 2007.

3.0 just was released last week... so 3.1 is only (more or less) in a planning phase.
And just to be clear, it will still use Word as the rendering engine. Inbox is only an Outlook plugin, and Outlook is what uses Word.

Thanks for the update.
I am in kind of a loophole - I cannot seem to find a way to have Outlook render in IE/FF instead of Word. And on the other hand I love the way Newsgator Inbox fetches all of the feeds as articles, unlike FeedDemon or Online - where I get just a short summary. The Inbox tool is so great in letting me delete whatever is not needed and just drag-and-drop to clippings. If FeedDemon would do the same I'd work with that all day long.
