Your opinion are correct: me too am not much friend of automated startup, but in this case (I read a lot of feeds) autostartup is a good thing for me (and for others too, looks like)
Of course, if the automatic startup feature will be added, nobody would be forced to use it. Having both the possibilities (auto/manual) IMHO is the best option, so to avoid limiting other desires/needs with personal ideas.
BTW, also showing categories in the header, as well as the possibilty to search article by categories coudl be a nice feature (but this is a different story).
