I noticed NewsGator Go! won't sync over WIFI. I request this feature.
I have the 8820. I disabled the radio and enabled WIFI and Go reports it's in Flight Mode. It says Flight Mode can't be turn off because the phone's data service is not available. At the same time I am able to surf the net in the browser.

I'm able to sync over WiFi without any problems with the 8830 (T-Mobile's Curve).
One difference could be that the 8830 supports UMA (allowing you make calls over the WiFi connection, basically treating the WiFi access point as a cell tower) which the 8820 would not.
