So I really like what I see with FeedDemon. But if I can't get these problems worked out, I'm dropping it like yesterday's news.
I just imported a largish list (93) of feeds from another program and they all showed up. However, many wouldn't update. I validated the feeds (they're all fine). I ensured that these websites were available. I then logged into NewsGator and noticed that these feeds had "last updated" dates of 1/1/1753 12:00:00 AM and 1/1/0001 12:00:00 AM. I even removed and added a feed again to see if that would get things showing up. No dice.
Now, I can get NG to read the feed by clicking on the refresh icon. And then FD sees it. My questions are:
1) What in the world is causing this to fail?
2) Why on earth can't FD force the feed to get refreshed. It's poor software design when hitting "update" doesn't cause your program to, well, update.
3) Why are the forums filled with a plethora of posts describing feeds that won't update.
4) Can I scrap NewsGator altogether? While it might be really cool if it worked, I downloaded FD wanting a standalone desktop app... So I'd give up NG and syncing my feeds to get that.
My NG username is the same as these forums (jayp). I'd really appreciate it if someone with the company could perhaps but my mind at ease before I commit to using the program and tell me what's causing all these feeds to not update. Thanks.

You can bypass NG completely by either creating a new folder and disabling sync on it, or disable sync on an existing folder (right-click | Properties). I'd try that with the problem feed to see if it's handled better, for troubleshooting reasons if nothing else.
It might also help to post the feed URL(s) so the NG guys can take a look at it.

| This post from Greg Reinacker should help explain questions 1 and 3; For question 1, when you initially subscribe to a post and NG has it already, you'll get the contents of the most recent update NG has picked up - which is not necessarily the same as the feed's most recent update. The article referenced above explains about the intervals at which NG checks feeds. The next time NG checks the feed, then you'll get the new posts. When you click refresh in NG, it goes out and gets the latest update immediately, which is then available to be sent down to FD - so everything is working as designed, actually. As far as the ones with date issues - if you can post the URLs that would help the dev team see if there is any issue and fix it if there is one. Regarding #2 - FD *is* updating when you hit update, but if you're synced and NG hasn't updated the feed yet, there's nothing for FD to get - in synced mode, FD gets its data from NG, not from the feed. Hitting update in FD (or any of the client applications) does not force NG to update the feed - only the "refresh" option in NG Online does. Now it may seem like a "plethora" of feeds to you, but you have to remember that Newsgator handles millions and millions of feeds - a few hundred feeds with issues (and the vast majority of which are issues on the feed end) is still a miniscule fraction of a percent of all the feeds NG has. Jack has already addressed your last question.

Thanks for the replies. I understand that NG handles millions of feeds. But when I import 93 feeds and some 30 of them aren't working and have prehistoric dates, that's a failure rate of 1/3. Also, there was no rhyme or reason to the failures. Blogger feeds worked and Blogger feeds didn't. WordPress feeds worked and WordPress feeds didn't. These feeds are all the same format published by the same tool. All feeds validated with the W3C. And the forums are filled with people complaining about the same thing. Furthermore, all I had to do was click on the update button inside of NG (under Settings -> My Feeds) and the feeds would update and come through. How can it be a problem of the feed when NG can pull the information down just fine. Rather, the problem was that NG just wasn't pulling the information down and never would unless I manually forced it to do so.
After giving it a day to see if these feeds would eventually update, I gave up and just turned off the syncing with NG completely. I'm liking feed demon a lot more. I may come back begging for help if I ever decide I could use the functionality of an online browser for my list of feeds.
It's a really great product and I appreciate the responses. From my admittedly very brief experience, and what I see on the forums, it would seem that syncing with NG could use some work.
