I'm finding, on my Motorola Q9, that when I e-mail posts, only 30 percent or so of them arrive at their destination. I get no error message -- it looks the same whether the email is going out successfully or not. Anyone else have this experience? Any suggestions? (Attention moderators: the technical problem I had with posting to this forum now seems to be resolved.)

Hi TomK,

Not personally had any problems with this functionality although I likely only use this feature 2-3 times a week as most of the time I clip rather than email items (and then use RSS on one of my clipped lists to pull those items into my blog feed)

As I understand it NewsGator's email function independently and immediately sends emails at the point you click send (not via any configured WM email accounts)

This means at the time of email you definitely need a valid data connection for this email to be sent. In my experience the email function does complain if it doesn't have a valid data connection.

If you could do further tests with and without a valid data connection on your device and let us know any more info you can give us. What type of data connection are you using? Phone or Wifi? Is there any connection to data type?

I'll try to do some more tests my end this week and let you know how reliable I find the functionality when I'm using it more.

Final note of course is to check SPAM folders as emails do come through as sender 'Unknown Unknown' which likely a lot of spam filters might not like?

Alan.

Alan,

Thanks for your reply. I have indeed discovered that the app needs a good data connection at the time you send the e-mail. I tend to send my e-mails from a commuter train, and at first I was disregarding the state of the signal and losing a lot of e-mails as a result. Now, though, I pay careful attention and don't send e-mails unless I have lots of bars (I have AT&T wireless Internet). I've checked my spam folder and there's nothing there.

I noted your reference to clippings. I don't understand, I'm afraid to say, how clippings work. What I want to do is to send posts that I find interesting to my PC so I can read them, print them, etc., when I get to work. That's why I'm e-mailing them. Is there some way to save them in a clippings folder and then e-mail them all at once from there? Or some other way to get everything out of the clipping folder onto my PC (preferably wirelessly, without cables).

Tom

Alan,

Here's another clue, perhaps: Sometimes when I try to send e-mails, I get a message saying the send failed but "an error message cannot be generated because the optional resource containing it cannot be found." Is there something wrong with my client? I have version 2.1.1.0.

Today from the train I sent about seven e-mails, all of them with the full five bars of AT&T signal and the "3G" designation showing on the phone. Only one of the e-mails came through.

Hi Tom,

I've been trying out emailing with the current latest version of the client (v2.1.2.1 see sticky thread on this forum) and while it used to work fine for me on this client (as long as I had a good data connection) during this last week I've had none of my emailed posts show up in my email.

I've sent a query direct to my contact at NewsGator asking if this feature goes via the NewsGator online service, in which case it might well be something on their server end that is the problem. Once I hear back from them I'll post any updates here.

Related to the error you're seeing, that's something that is normal if your data connection is missing at time of send, but is actually due to not having a debug version of Microsoft .Net libraries on your device, not NewsGator's issues specifically. Obviously unless you get an error by having a missing data connection you'll never see this error about needing extra libraries to show you that error message (;-) So no, I think your device and software install is not currently to blame, although I would recommend you upgrade to v2.1.2.1 to get all the latest bug fixes (The major one being a fix for the 'Blank posts' bug if you data connection isn't active - Would think very important for you on the train!)

In terms of using Clippings, what you describe you use email feature for is exactly how I use Clippings. Sorting and saving particular items to use later.

On your desktop login to www.newsgator.com and fill in your normal newsgator username and password in the top right of the homepage. This will take you to the full online version of Newsgator which acts as a hub for all other Newsgator clients to sync to (FeedDemon, NewsGator Go, etc)

Once logged in, look for 'My Clippings' folder on the left hand side and right click and select 'New Folder' to make a folder structure that works for you, mine currently looks like:

- My Clippings
- - Blog Post
- - Cool Stuff
- - My Podcasts
- - To Read
- - Video

Once you've done that anytime I find an article I'm reading on my phone that I want to keep I just select clip on the phone and then choose the right directory for that item and then keep reading.

The good things about clippings are then that:

- I've already added some categorisation at time of saving them
- Adding a clipping works offline with no data connection (Clippings sync next time you sync your device, so remember to do that ;-)
- Look via NewsGator Online on any PC with a web browser, no download, just login
- Via NewsGator Online you can set a clipping folder to expose itself as an RSS feed, so I use my Blog Post folder to automatically update my blog page with stuff I find! Or you can also use this to suck those Clipping folders back down to your device for later reading (as WM client normally can only add, not read clipping folders at the moment)

One point of note, is that after you've changed clipping folder's structure next time you clip on your device you'll need an active data connection and during clipping destination selection select 'Refresh Folders' from bottom right 'Menu' option, otherwise you'll just see old clipping structure.

If you do prefer a bit more of a download format to you RSS on the desktop just use FeedDemon which again syncs to everything happening on NewsGator Online (Web based version) including clippings folders - http://www.newsgator.com/individuals/default.aspx

Hope that helps,

Alan

Alan,

This is great. Clippings should solve my problem, thanks to you ... but something still isn't right.

I set up several subfolders under My Clippings in the Web version. And, indeed, if I go on my device to Newsgator Go! settings, choose Clipping from the menu and Refresh Folders, I see those folders that I entered in the Web version.

But how to put items into those folders? If I choose a post and select "Clip," I'm taken to a page that simply shows the label "My Clippings" (highlifghted in blue), next to a plus sign and a little image of a folder with a downward-pointing arrow. I would expect that if I clicked on "My Clippings," it would open up and I could see my subfolders. But when I click on it, the screen just takes me back to the list of feeds. (I can't get my cursor over to the plus sign or the image of a folder, so there's no way to click there.) And the clicking on "My Clippings" itself doesn't make the post show up in the Web version, even after a new sync.

Is this some problem that the newest version of the client would solve? I'd like to get it, but under Menu/Settings/Version, the "Check for New" option is grayed out.

Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong. You'll know.

Tom

Hi Tom,

Glad you like the sound of clippings, sounds like you're almost there.

If you've got a Plus sign next to 'My Clippings' folder when you've asked to do a new 'Clip', and if you can't click on the onscreen Plus sign, then just pushing Right on your devices D-Pad should open that folder to show the sub folders you've set up.

You can then either select those folders onscreen or with the D-Pad (Note: Newsgator Go doesn't work that well with onscreen mouse pointers but you can change this behaviour within Windows Mobile's overall 'Settings' menu)

As soon as you've selected a folder you'll be returned to your previous location, however if you look at your items list for a particular feed the ones you've successfully clipped should now have a paperclip icon to the left of the item title.

If you've seen the paperclip icon then it should just be a case of doing a Sync of your feeds on the device and then go onto Newsgator Online to see the items appear there within the Clippings folder you asked!

Note: If you're already logged into NewsGator Online make sure to click the 'Refresh Feed List' link down the bottom left to make sure you see any recent updates.

Alan

If you want to try out the latest program version. Then at the moment you will need to manually uninstall your current NewsGator client (From Start > Settings > System Tab > Remove Programs), then choose a download URL from this post: http://forum.newsgator.com/Topic43827-56-1.aspx

Choose a 'NGMobilePPCSetup' version if you have a touch screen device, or 'NGMobileSPSetup' if you don't. Choose the '.CAB' version if you want to direct download to via you device's browser, Choose the '.exe' version if you want to install via your PC and ActiveSync.

Alan,

I downloaded the new client but am still not able to get into the subfolders. (I am successful in clipping stories into the main "My Clippings" folder and they show up on the Web version very nicely.)

Nothing happens when I push Right on my rocker pad when I'm at the 'My Clippings' folder. I assume this is the pad you're referring to .. the 4-way pad that surrounds the center 'click' button.

You note that "Newsgator Go doesn't work that well with onscreen mouse pointers but you can change this behaviour within Windows Mobile's overall 'Settings' menu." If that's my problem, what do I want to change in the Settings?

Best

Tom

Alan,

Just to be clear, the Q9 doesn't have a touchscreen.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for confirming your device is a Motorola Q9 non-touchscreen device.

Pushing right when the 'My Clippings' folder is highlighted blue opens the tree to get to sub folders on my touchscreen device, but I know there are some differences between the two (PPC vs SP) program versions.

I'll message one of the Newsgator actual developers as I don't have a non-touchscreen device myself.

Glad you're at least able to clip to main folder now, but it is soo much more organised to be able to use the sub folders!

Alan
