Hello,

I've gotten sick of waiting for Bloglines to update functionality of their service, so I thought I'd try out some compeetitors. Newsgator seems like a good alternative, but there are a few pieces that seem to be missing:

1) I've been trying to duplicate what I have on Bloglines and was able to import my OPML file, but newsgator only sees the last 5-20 posts of a feed, based on what's actually in the feed. When I click on older posts I get a lot of additional ones, but I can't do anything with them except for clipping them. I want to be able to "make them unread"

2) In relation to 1), there doesn't seem to be a way to make anything unread, so if you accidentally tag something as read, it's permanent!

3) Bloglines keeps older posts that you haven't read even if they aren't in the last X number of posts as specified by the actual feed file. Does Newsgator do this, or do I lost those posts once they get superceeded by newer ones? This is particularly a problem with really active blogs like boingboing, becuase their older posts would get superceded within the same day, or at most the following day.

4) I hope to be using the mobile version on my Treo 600, but I need to know first whether the same functionality is present in the mobile version. The big reason I'm leaving Bloglines is because they can't seem to add the very basic functionality to their mobile version without which it becomes unusable in the same way you would use it via a regular web interface.

5) Is there any way to tell how many people have subscribed to a given feed via Newsgator? I have a blog myself so this info would be useful. If so, is there a way to tell who is subscribed? In relation to this question, can you make your own subscriptions public or private?

Thanks!

To your questions...

1, 2, 3 - you're right...once a post is marked as read, that's it.  Also, the "current" posts will only show unread posts that are still available in the feed.  After an item "falls off" the feed, it will go into the "older posts" category.

It all works a bit different than some other sites, but give it a chance and see if it works for you.  On the bright side, it limits the amount of content you have to catch up with if you fall behind.  All that said, we realize that we need to make some changes in this area...we're working on evolving our design in that area.

4 - the mobile version displays unread, "current" content.  Basically, the same rules apply to the mobile edition as to the web edition.

5 - we're working on this.  Right now, the subscriber counts are sent to the publisher in the user-agent when we retrieve the feed; we're working on the GUI to publish this information on the site.

There won't be a way to tell who is subscribed in general - user subscriptions are private, unless the user specifically exposes a subset of his subscriptions.  How this will work into the subscriber count GUI I mention above, I'm not sure yet...but in any case, we won't display any information about a user that they haven't specifically allowed.

Hope this helps!
