Hi Vincent,
Clippings is a way to save items for later, as you're reading news, you can click on the  icon, which will save a copy in "My Clippings". Organizationally, it just makes it easier to find the things you've really liked, as opposed to trying to search back through your archives.
You can also expose clippings as an RSS feed so other people can subscribe to things you think are interesting, sort of like a lightweight weblog.
