I just installed the tech preview version of Office 2010 64 bit and discovered, much to my dismay, that Newsgator Inbox doesn’t appear to be working with it. I uninstalled and reinstalled Newsgator Inbox 3.0 and see it in the listed Com add-ins, but it doesn’t show the location of the add-in.

Do you perhaps have a beta available that will work with Outlook 2010 64 bit? Fortunately, this is only a test box, but not having my favorite add-in working is still an issue.

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of 2010 to test with. We've also put any development of Inbox on hold so I doubt I would have a chance anytime soon to figure out what may be happening.

Thanks for the quick reply, Nick. Sorry to read the development is on hold for inbox.

I suspect that there are multiple issues at work here. Outlook 2010 uses the ribbon, so the Newsgator Inbox toolbar doesn't appear, nor can it as near as I can tell. And it may install into an incorrect location since the folders for Office 2010 are not the same as prior versions. NG Inbox apparently registers itself as an add-in.

I reported the issue in the private beta newsgroup and I might poke around a bit myself to see if I need to move anything or change any pointers to get it to load properly at least.

Look in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins and see if it gets registered there. If its there, see what its LoadBehavior value is set to.

Up to Office 12, that's were Addins would register themselves to get loaded. If Outlook failed to load them for whatever reason, it would change the LoadBehavior to 2 (successful loads would be 3).

I'd be interested to see what those values are just out of curiosty.

You could also run the 'Submit NewsGator Inbox Diagnostics Report" tool from Start > Program Files > NewsGator > Inbox - that will list out a bunch of stuff. Paste that here and I'll take a look. The log file may have even more detail too. I can tell you how to get to that as well if you want.

It is indeed a 2 in that key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\NewsGator.Connect]
"Description"="RSS News Aggregator for Microsoft Outlook"
"FriendlyName"="NewsGator Inbox"
"LoadBehavior"=dword:00000002

As for the diagnostics report, I get this when trying to run it on x64 Windows 7:

Could not create Newsgator Inbox Diagnostics: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at System.Object.GetType()
at NGInboxDiagnostics.Program.Main()

Selecting to run as administrator gets me a different error:

I then ran the Installation Analyzer that was in the Start Menu group:

yeah - that means that the COM objects used in Outlook 10/11/12 are different then 2010, which really isn't a surprise. But it would most likely take a code change to get it working.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but if it did it wouldn't be anytime soon.

Thanks again, Nick. Since this is the early beta of Outlook 2010, I don't intend to give up Outlook 2007 and Newsgator Inbox any time soon on my main machines.

I'll give this a shot on the 32 bit version of Outlook 2010 within the next few days and let you know the results. It could certainly be a 64 bit issue since that is totally new for Office.

If you would like any other information from me, feel free to email me at sboots at mvps.org at any time. I will remain hopeful that NG inbox does get updated in the future for the next version of Office. I've enjoyed NG Inbox for quite a few years now and I am an Outlook junkie.

Hello, Nick.

I've got some news for you on this topic.

1. I installed the 32 bit version of Office 2010 Tech Preview on another machine running Windows 7 RC this morning and installed Newsgator Inbox successfully.

2. I received confirmation from the Outlook team that the model for add-ins was not changed for Office 2010. However, the issue is that yesterday I was trying to install the add-in on 64 bit Office. In order for add-ins to work on the 64 bit version of Office 2010, they need to be re-compiled for 64 bit. Not being a developer, I don't know what that involves, but I would imagine that it won't be as difficult as having to re-write the add-ins. This will be the case for all Outlook com add-ins.

If you need anything from me, don't hesitate to contact me.
