Having greatly enjoyed using Newsgator to sync and clip between various Web, WM and Inbox versions it's obviously officially time to move on for Windows Mobile users who want offline reading support.
Below is a list of alternatives I've found so far with some initial pros and cons that might help others. If you know or have opinions on other alternatives not mentioned here, please add to this thread and I'll try and update this summary information:
pRSSreader - http://code.google.com/p/prssr/
- Was the RSS reader I used before coming to Newsgator for syncronised reading.
- Original developer has finished developing this application earlier this year, but it's open source, free and can be set to sync with Google Reader feeds and statues (Just go into Options > Sync tab and enter Google Reader details, then go into 'Manage Subscriptions' and choose 'Sync Subscriptions' to bring down all your Google Reader feeds)
- Works in a range of offline modes including options to pre-download item images, actual article web page and enclosures
- Can 'Flag' articles, but only works locally to WM, doesn't sync back to Google
- Quite good interface, finger friendly (Has 2 navigation modes in options 'WM Standard' or 'Touch friendly')
FreeRange reader - http://mwap.at
- Requires signup to an account. Despite what web pages say apparently 10 feed limit has now been removed
- Offline reader recommended by NewsGator, Freerange platform apparently powers parts of Newsgator
- Google Reader integration appears to require $40 per year subscription purchased via http://www.freerangeinc.com/w/buy_now/ (Trying to get confirmation of this)
- Default text very big on high res screens, text size can be reset to 6pt if you click up, while dropdown is open (bit hidden as no indication of scrollbar or smaller options visually)
Viigo - http://getviigo.com/
- Seems quite slick offline reader for RSS and other functions all in one, but doesn't sync to any web based service as far as I can see, so on handheld only.
As I said, very happy for others to help fill out the detail or any other alternatives they have.

It's also worth noting that in addition to Google Reader's main desktop browser reader at http://www.google.com/reader/ there are two additional URLs that might be of interest to many mobile users:
http://www.google.com/reader/m/
Is the basic mobile reader version that will work on any phone web browser and does support most major features including 'Star'ing
However for people with more advanced javascript mobile web browsers like Opera try out:
http://www.google.com/reader/i/
This is a much richer interface designed for iPhone, but accessible just by going to this alternate URL
Note both sites have a few Settings available to change that may improve your experience including number of posts per page and whether following article links should be optimised via Google Web Optimiser or not.
