| Are they gone for good? Is there anyway to retrieve them? I had 100s of quotes, many articles and pieces for future use in the Clippings folder and now they're gone. Anyone got any suggestions... other than screaming loudly and banging my head on the desk?

They're still in the online reader interface, so I'm guessing you are a NNW user? Check [home folder]/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/ExportedClippings/
also http://nnwbeta.com/ (clippings are shown again)
