Hi,

Something I'd like to see Newsgator offer is the ability to provide URL access to my blogroll.

I can see this working in one of two ways: A url at newsgator that returns an xml representation of my blogroll, which I could then p**** and display on my site, or have some script which can be copied onto a site which displays the blogs you're subscribed to. Something like the symantec threat syndicator found here.

Would anyone else find this useful?

I don't use Newsgator offline, btw, so uploading my own OPML isn't an option.

NewsGator Online provides two different features that could do what you want. Both are tied into NewsGator's "Locations". Log into NewsGator Online, then click on NewsGator Manager, then Edit Locations.

There are built-in locations (depending on your account level) for the variety of ways that you can read news. The "NewsGator Web Edition" probably contains the list of things you'd like to expose.

First, we allow you to expose a dynamic OPML file that contains the list of your subscriptions. In fact, this already available, but locked down to require your user account and password. You can make it public, and include this link on your site for people who would like your subs list in OPML form. You could also consume this OPML yourself and repurpose it for your web site.

But second, we also support a Blogroll function. This allows you to create an HTML template for displaying your subscription list. You would embed a small piece of JavaScript on your site which would instruct browsers to come and get the formatted HTML and display your blogroll.

Hopefully through one (or both) of these features, you'll be able to get the display you're looking for.

Good luck!

P.S. If you want a subset of your subscription list, you can create a custom location specifically for that purpose, and manage the subscription list of that location by hand (when you add new subscriptions) so that it reflects the list of blogs that you want on your blogroll. You can even control whether new subscriptions will automatically be added to the custom location or not.

See my previous (unanswered) post on this topic. The idea is good, but the implementation is hopelessly flawed.

Excellent, thanks for the response. This is exactly what I had in mind! I didn't realise you already provided the functionality. I'm now a happy man

I guess there are no security implications to making the opml available to everyone? Its just a privacy thing, right?

You can make your OPML public by doing the following steps:

1) go to www.newsgator.com and sign in

2) click the ‘newsgator manager’ tab

3) click ‘Edit Locations’ link below that

4) in the NewsGator Web Edition section, if the OPML is not noted as (Public), click the OPML link and click the checkbox for ‘Expose OPML to all users’ and [Save Changes].
