Why automatic prefetch is no longer available?

It is a powerful tool for the people with bad internet connectivity.

Hi Edddy,

I dropped automatic prefetch for a number of reasons, but primarily because very few people used it, and from what I've seen many of those who did use it didn't understand what it did (for example, quite a few customers thought they needed to enable prefetch in order to view images even when they weren't offline).

I also heard from a number of customers who complained about FeedDemon being slow, and it turned out it was because they enabled automatic prefetch even though they didn't need it.

Really, the reason I added prefetching is so you can disconnect, take your computer with you (on a train, etc.) and still view images and follow links.  In that situation, you know you're going to be offline, so you can start prefetching before you go.  Given this use case, having FeedDemon prefetch after every update is "expensive" - it unnecessarily slows FeedDemon down and fills your cache with links and images you're unlikely going to need cached.

Best,

Also, if you have bad connectivity, you should probably be using the "Optimize for slower connections" option instead of prefetch

Hi Nick, thanks for the reply.
I will tell you my use case, and maybe you can setup an obscure registry key to turn it back on.

I live in a rural area and my internet connection is no good.
I have setup FD to update the feeds every 2 hours (too keep productivity up) and automatic prefetch of images (only images in posts).
So, when the news posts are loaded, I quickly scan them, read the important or interesting ones, mark as read and done!

Without the automatic prefetch, I have to wait in each page, for the images to download, slowing me down.

I certainly see your use case - but as Critter suggested, wouldn't it make more sense to enable "Optimize for slower connections" so the images aren't displayed in the first place?  That would certainly speed things up for you!

But the images are really important to quickly know what the post is about!! (maybe the most important thing)

Anyway, I can live without it, but was the only feature added since long time ago, that really help make my rss reading better, and the one that make FD better than the others (from my point of view)

Thanks for your time.
Cheers!
Eduardo

Sorry for coming back with this thing, but I'm really missing the auto-prefetch in the last few days.
And it is a pity because I know the functionality is there, but just turned off.

Do you thing that is there a way to convince you to provide some kind of hidden trick to turn it back on? Pleeeeaasee?

I'm really sorry - I hate having to drop a feature that you relied on.  But it was just causing too many problems, so when I rewrote the prefetching in v3.0, I did so without including an automatic prefetch feature.  So, it's not something I can just secretly re-enable, because it's simply not there anymore!

Fair enough. I will try to use 3.0.0.25 as long as I can.

Thanks again.

New idea: Add a menu or shortcut to "Update all + Prefech"

What do you think? (you can't say I'm not insistent )
