Hi:
I've been a happy user of FeedDemon since I purchased it in 2004.
Since I can't use IE7 currently because of a compatibility problem with one important app, I decided to stick with FD 2.7 at least for a while. (Mistake?)
In the evening of Sep 30, when I opened FD, no feeds appeared. I assumed this was because the synchronization with Newsgator was dropped, so I unsynced all feeds. Then they were pulled in and things seemed fine.
The next day I noticed that all the folders had been renamed with an appended "-1"
e.g., from News to News-1
The older folders were there also, with the same feeds as the "-1" folders, but the feeds had no items in them.
Further examination showed that the "-1" folders appeared as unsynced, while the older folders were still synced.
So:
original folder new folder
----------------------------------------
News News-1
(same feeds) (same feeds)
nothing in feeds populated feeds, working
So I have two questions:
1. How should I best deal with this situation for now before going to FD 3?
Leave things as they are? Delete the original folders and rename the new ones?
???
2. How should I handle this when I do the migration to FD 3.0?
Will all folders be synced with Google Reader, or just the older (empty) ones that are currently synced?
Should I set up sync for the new "-1" feeds before doing the conversion?
???
Thanks very much for your help,
-- Harvey

Yuck. I think I know why this happened, but more importantly, I believe we can fix it:- First, make a backup of FeedDemon's cache (File > Manage Cache > Backup), just to be safe
- Go to FD2.7’s synchronization options, then click “Create/Edit Account” and hit Shift+Ctrl+R
- Click the exposed “Remove Account” button to un-sync your feeds (no need to remove them from NewsGator, though - that'll just slow things down)
- Delete the empty, duplicate folders (the ones with feeds that have no items)
- Rename the "-1" folders
- Close FD2.7, then install FD3.0 and choose to let the startup wizard sync your feeds (assuming you want to sync with Google Reader)
I know that's a bit of work, and I'm sorry about that. If you have any trouble doing this, please let me know. Best,
Nick Bradbury

Thank you so much for your super-fast response.
I followed your very clear instructions, and everything went smoothly.
(At least the first part.)
As I mentioned, I'm stuck with IE6 for the moment:
would you still advise installing FD3.0, or should I stick with 2.7 for now?

P.S. Thanks for your continuing excellent support of your products -- keeping people informed and addressing problems, etc. -- it's great!

| Thanks for the kind words, Harvey! I should start off by saying that as the developer of FeedDemon, I'm very biased about anyone using an older version - I always want people to use the most recent version That said, functionally FD3.0 will still work with IE6. But every now and then you may see some jumbled text in the newspaper, and some of the icons in the newspaper will have an ugly gray background instead of being transparent. I do know that a few people are using FD3.0 with IE6 and other than those problems, I haven't heard of any issues.
