I love the new feed-top blog banners. They're incredibly functional and have solidified NewsGator Online as my favorite RSS reader.

So why not use a mini-banner over each post when a user views a whole category of feeds? That'd rock too.

I love the feed banner too.  For those that haven't seen it yet it is at the top of each feed you are subscribed to.  Let us know what you think, suggestions, etc.

This addresses several feature requests that I have seen out there regarding...

  • unsubscribing on the fly
  • mark all as read
  • number of subscribers
  • feed information

Nick - thanks! :-)

Can you elaborate on your mini-banner idea?  What info and actions would be displayed there?

Just the banner, but maybe thinner -- just the title, perhaps. Currently, when I view multiple feeds at once (by clicking the headline of a whole category of feeds), I see all these feeds mixed up, sorted by publication time. The blog/feed title is in light gray under the item, and it links not to the blog but to the feed within Newsgator.

If I can jump into the conversation ...  I had no idea what everyone was talking about with these "Blog Banners."  Why?  Because I never read my feeds one feed at a time. (I have since looked at an individual feed and have seen the banner.)

I have so many feeds that I have put them into broad categories. Then, I either read them all a category at a time, or I simply read from the root -- i.e. reading them all on one page, 50 feed items at a time.

That said, I still want and could use some of the features you've put in the feed banners -- especially because I have feeds and feeds items all intermingled. Specifically, it would be nice to be able to:

  1. Know the feed item source (and other pertinent information) right up front instead of having to scroll to the bottom of each item.
  2. Be able to unsubscribe from the feed the feed item refers to.
  3. I have my feed items automatically marked as read, but others may like the Mark as Read functionality here.

I can't remember off-hand, but when one reads a category of feeds or all feeds from their root folder, you group the displayed items by feed, correct?  (If not, that would be nice.) One alternative to a mini-banner for each feed item would be to also use the feed banner in the category and/or root view, such that it showed up once on top of each grouped feed.  That would meet my needs at least.

Evan

Don't you hate "me too" posts? But... me too.

It's definitely a step in the right direction, but like evkitt I read my feeds by category, not individual feeds.

Doing this with it set to "Mark all as read" as I have it, I'm in for a penny, in for a pound. I would love to have all the info about each individual feed right up front. As I transition from one feed to the next within a category it's sometimes difficult to tell I'm reading a different feed until I get to the bottom. I'd rather have that info up front. I would also love the ability to "retain" or "mark unread" a feed or article(s) as I go so I can click away and come back and still have the feeds there.

I also read with "Mark all as read" set, and I love the "retain" or "mark unread" idea per feed item. I should have thought of that myself.

So when you read a folder-at-a-time, and there are multiple feeds in the folder, the contained items are sorted by publish date, and are not grouped by feed.  I'm guessing from some of these comments that some of you would want the ability to group by feed within this folder view?

If your answer to the above is yes, then I have a question for you.

If you want the content grouped by feed, why aren't you just clicking on individual feeds on the left?

I'm not trying to argue (really!) - it's just that we've been kicking this around a bit, and we're trying to understand the underlying use case before implementing something.

There's probably some people who would like to read them ordered by time and still have some of that information up front per feed.  However, I wouldn't mind having them ordered by feed with a feed banner at the top of each.

So why not just click on each individual feed in the left column?  Because I have folders with anywhere from 1 to 18 feeds each. This may sound lazy, but I like to think of it as pragmatic: I'd rather click the folder once and get my feed items ordered by feed (with clear identification information and useful tools at top) than have to click 18 times just to get through one folder (I have 12 folders), assuming they all have a new feed item.

And, for me, I usually just click the root folder and see all of the feeds, 50 feed items per page (since that's the default and can't be changed) at a time.  That's where the grouping by feed -- with clear identification information and useful tools -- really comes in handy.

Does that make sense?
