Since upgrading to OS X 10.4.3, I have about one freeze a day. I have to force quit and restart to continue. NNW remembers the tabs so I don't lose them, but it does not remember "read" so I get the full set again.

These freezes always occur when I have read the article in a tab and dismiss it. I get a steady rainbow wheel and the Dock announces that the application is unresponsive.

Is there a glitch introduced by the latest system upgrade? Should I reload NNW? Is this a special case or are others having the problem? (with no search on this forum {</script>void('')}, I can't tell).

Here's the search page: http://www.newsgator.com/forum/search.aspx

About this freeze, a few things...

- Do you have lots of tabs? (As in, more than ten -- like 50 or 100 or more?) If so, then clearing out some of these and having fewer tabs will help.

- Sometimes the WebKit cache gets weird. I recommend clearing it out and and seeing if that helps. Here's what to do:

1. Quit NetNewsWire.

2. Delete the folder at ~/Library/Caches/NetNewsWire/

3. Launch NetNewsWire and see if the problem comes back.

- If the problem persists, then I'd love to get a Sampler report next time it happens. This will let me know what NetNewsWire is doing. Here's what to do:

1. Launch Activity Monitor and select NetNewsWire in the table in the main window.

2. From the View menu, choose Sample Process.

3. A report window will appear. Once the report is generated, click the Save... button. Then send email -- including the file as an attachment -- to support@newsgator.com.

- Rarely more than 9 or 10 tabs, never permanent.

- Cleared Cache as recommended

- I know about Sampler; will do if NNW freezes again.

Thanks for the reply.

Seems to have solved the problem - thanks again!

I'm having the same issue. NetNewsWire freezes, pinwheels and I can click around, but nothing happens. Then suddenly all the places I clicked suddenly activate in rapid succession and it frees up. Now keep in mind I have A LOT of feeds (nearly 300), but you'd expect the program could cope. This is running on a dual 2.5 with 4 gigs of RAM as well.

I have attached my Sample. I performed the sample during a pinwheel freeze. And this is also AFTER clearing the cache directory.

Thanks for the sample.

My guess, based on looking at the sample, is that you have persistence settings such that NetNewsWire is keeping lots of items.

One thing you can do is set your persistence settings to a smaller number of days -- or just have items disappear when they disappear from the feed. (Open the Preferences window and look where it says "Keep Items" on the General pane.)

Flagged items stay forever, no matter what your persistence settings are. This allows you to selectively decide what to keep.

Shouldn't NNW be able to handle a lot of kept items?

Yes, it should -- and we continue to work on performance.
